And Indian students do not want to remain bullied, scared or imprisoned to silence any more. What do they face? An insensitive police, an unimaginative political leadership of post-truth era, a restrictive society that wants to decide what will they wear and whom will they fall in love with. The rebel in the student is not willing to take it lying down and campuses are on fire again. Delhi University is the latest to be added to the list, as the Sangh-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarti Parishat (ABVP) is at loggerheads with their opponents.

If Rohith Vemula stood up and was later silenced into suicide last year, Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid rose to fill the gap. Now, 20-year-old Gurmeher Kaur has become the rallying point after she used just 25 words to oppose the ABVP whom several have accused of indulging in violence. The trigger was an invitation to Khalid, who was in the eye of a storm over a function on Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru to a seminar – 'Culture of Protests' in Delhi's Ramjas College.

Some say the fight is for controlling university campuses where the Right-wing has not had much hold. They cite protests and resistance that have been triggered in Hyderabad Central University (HCU), IIT-Madras, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and elsewhere since the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014. The campus has turned into a laboratory to test whether students are patriotic enough and not whether they have assimilated critical thinking ability.

The university campuses have not made headlines for some months now, but the lull was broken on February 21 in Ramjas College where the seminar was organised by the English Department. Violence broke out in the campus and the hands-tied police added fuel to the fire through its inaction. The ABVP made the invitation to Khalid a contentious issue. After ABVP-controlled DU Students Union (DUSU) raised objections about Khalid's presence and the police said they cannot assure protection, the invitation was recalled.

The seminar was held without Khalid but all was not over. The ABVP activists continued the protest which later turned violent as they pelted stones and bottles at students and teachers who took out a silent march to protest against the Sangh outfit. The ABVP's point was that they would not allow “anti-nationals” to propagate their views. The two-day seminar was called off. Had the violence been nipped in the bud, it would not have spiralled into a wider protest.

The next day, Delhi University's North Campus was tense and police were deployed. Students, including those belonging to the Left-affiliated All India Students Association (AISA), wanted to take out a march from Ramjas, but ABVP activists had other ideas. They blocked the entry and exit points and targeted students. Clashes broke out between both groups of students. An assistant professor had to be taken out in an ambulance.

Later, students went out to protest as police formed a human chain. Still they were attacked, and the police suddenly decided to clear the area and resorted to caning the students. Journalists, too, had to bear the police fury. Some of them removed their nameplates, punched and kicked protesting students and mediapersons who were covering the incident. An inspector was heard lamenting to a journalist later that his juniors did not listen and targeted students.

Partisan police

The police were accused of partisan behaviour. An FIR was filed on the basis of the ABVP complaint of raising “anti-national” slogans, which included demands for “azadi” for Kashmir and naxal-affected Bastar. But complaints from the other side were not turned into cases, students allege. The police did not take proactive steps to defuse the tension or ensure security of students, rather they beat them up. Girls were physically targeted by the police and some section of the students.

The police van stationed outside Ramjas became a platform for ABVP activists to pelt stones at their opponents. The police are supposed to uphold Constitution and not just law and order. It is their duty to ensure that freedom of expression, a vital right ensured in the Constitution, is protected. An imagined fear should not be the reason for restricting someone from speaking his mind.

One of the highlights of the protests came on February 24 when Gurmeher, a BA English Honours student at Lady Shri Ram College and the daughter of a martyred soldier, tweeted her photo with a poster, which read, “I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP.” It struck a chord with many students.

But Gurmeher had to face more. Someone dug out an anti-war video made by her a year ago in which she says “Pakistan did not kill her father, but war did”. Some chose to twist the message or refused to understand what she meant. The troll machinery was on a roll and rape threats were issued online. Not just students or BJP supporters but Union ministers and senior BJP leaders and sportspersons jumped on to troll her and give her unsolicited advice on nationalism and how she was influenced by the “Leftists”.

Whether it was Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju or senior ministers like M Venkaiah Naidu, all waded into the controversy abandoning nuance. Campuses were once again pictured as den of criminals and anti-nationals while issuing warnings that no subversive action would be allowed. Curiously, all these comments were made while not a word was said against the country as they believe. Khalid had a point when he said ABVP indulged in violence though he did not participate and their problem is with dissent in democracy.

If a country fears a student with an independent mind, the problem is not with the student. As President Pranab Mukherjee said in Kochi recently, these temples of learning must “resound with creativity and free thinking” and those in universities must “engage in reasoned discussion and debate rather than propagate a culture of unrest”. It is important that our campuses do not slide into such an abyss.

New delhi, Jun 22: As consumer sentiment runs high amid growing chorus for boycotting Chinese goods in the country, the fluid market situation offers new opportunities for various smartphone makers, especially the non-Chinese ones like Samsung, Apple, Nokia, Asus and others, to realign their strategies and regain the lost market share in the face of fierce Chinese competition.

The challenge here would be not to look "opportunistic" and leverage the current explosive situation on just riding on the anti-Chinese sentiment but to offer real challenges in the form of top-end devices with solid internals at affordable price points, feel industry experts.

"The current market conditions in India are fluid and open up new opportunities for smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to focus and leverage," Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR), told IANS.

In the first quarter (January-March) this year, Samsung's shipments were driven by its upgraded A and M series (A51, A20s, A30s, and M30s).

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung managed to hold third position in Q1 2020 due to launches across several price tiers, especially in the affordable premium segment (S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite).

The South Korean smartphone maker last week announced a Rs 4,000 price drop on its popular Galaxy Note10 Lite smartphone that will now cost Rs 37,999 (6GB variant).

Earlier this month, Samsung launched two new smartphones, Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M01, with powerful batteries under Rs 15,000 in India.

Galaxy M11 comes in two variants. The 3GB+32GB will be priced at Rs 10,999 while the higher 4GB+64GB variant will be available for Rs 12,999.

Samsung has also launched an affordable Galaxy A21s smartphone with quad-camera system and 5,000mAh battery at a starting price of Rs 16,499.

On the other hand, Apple grew a strong 78 per cent YoY driven by strong shipments of iPhone 11 and multiple discounts on platforms like Flipkart and Amazon in Q1, according to Counterpoint.

Apple has also brought its cheapest yet powerful new iPhone SE that costs Rs 38,900 (64GB) in India with a special offer from HDFC Bank. The new iPhone SE is powered by the Apple-designed A13 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone and features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone.

According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Counterpoint Research, consumer sentiments are running high and a section of users will look for alternatives, benefitting global and Indian brands.

"However, we do not think non-Chinese brands will run aggressive campaigns based on the situation as it might look like being opportunistic," Pathak told media.

It may actually let brands of Chinese origin try to run aggressive campaigns on their presence and scale.

"Some of these Chinese brands have been active in scaling up local value addition, creating jobs and investing in research and development," Pathak noted.

On Saturday, market leader Xiaomi said that it is "more Indian" than any other smartphone brand.

The company's India head Manu Kumar Jain said that the company's mobile phone R&D centre and product team is in India, it employs 50,000 people in the country, the entire leadership team is Indian and that the company pays its taxes in India.

Earlier, Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth who is also very active on social media said that Realme is an Indian startup.

In his latest episode of Ask Madhav' series on YouTube, Sheth said: "I can proudly say Realme is an Indian startup, which is now a global MNC (multinational corporation)".

Washington DC, Jun 8: Astronomers acting on a hunch have likely resolved a mystery about young, still-forming stars and regions rich in organic molecules closely surrounding some of them.

They used the National Science Foundation's Karl G Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to reveal one such region that previously had eluded detection and that revelation answered a longstanding question.

The regions around the young protostars contain complex organic molecules which can further combine into prebiotic molecules that are the first steps on the road to life.

The regions, dubbed "hot corinos" by astronomers, are typically about the size of our solar system and are much warmer than their surroundings, though still quite cold by terrestrial standards.

The first hot corino was discovered in 2003 and only about a dozen have been found so far. Most of these are in binary systems, with two protostars forming simultaneously.

Astronomers have been puzzled by the fact that, in some of these binary systems, they found evidence for a hot corino around one of the protostars but not the other.

"Since the two stars are forming from the same molecular cloud and at the same time, it seemed strange that one would be surrounded by a dense region of complex organic molecules and the other wouldn't," said Cecilia Ceccarelli, of the Institute for Planetary Sciences and Astrophysics at the University of Grenoble (IPAG) in France.

The complex organic molecules were found by detecting specific radio frequencies, called spectral lines, emitted by the molecules. Those characteristic radio frequencies serve as "fingerprints" to identify the chemicals.

The astronomers noted that all the chemicals found in hot corinos had been found by detecting these "fingerprints" at radio frequencies corresponding to wavelengths of only a few millimetres.

"We know that dust blocks those wavelengths, so we decided to look for evidence of these chemicals at longer wavelengths that can easily pass through dust," said Claire Chandler of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and principal investigator on the project.

"It struck us that dust might be what was preventing us from detecting the molecules in one of the twin protostars," added Chandler.

The astronomers used the VLA to observe a pair of protostars called IRAS 4A, in a star-forming region about 1,000 light-years from Earth. They observed the pair at wavelengths of centimetres.

At those wavelengths, they sought radio emissions from methanol, CH3OH (wood alcohol, not for drinking). This was a pair in which one protostar clearly had a hot corino and the other did not, as seen using the much shorter wavelengths.

The result confirmed their hunch. "With the VLA, both protostars showed strong evidence of methanol surrounding them. This means that both protostars have hot corinos. The reason we did not see the one at shorter wavelengths was because of dust," said Marta de Simone, a graduate student at IPAG who led the data analysis for this object.

The astronomers cautioned that while both hot corinos now are known to contain methanol, there still may be some chemical differences between them. That, they said, can be settled by looking for other molecules at wavelengths not obscured by dust.

"This result tells us that using centimetre radio wavelengths is necessary to properly study hot corinos," Claudio Codella of Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory in Florence, Italy, said.

"In the future, planned new telescopes such as the next-generation VLA and SKA, will be very important to understanding these objects," added Codella.

Leiden, Jul 2: Astronomers have discovered a luminous galaxy caught in the act of reionizing its surrounding gas only 800 million years after the Big Bang.

The research, led by Romain Meyer, PhD student at UCL in London, UK, has been presented at the virtual annual meeting of the European Astronomical Society (EAS).

Studying the first galaxies that formed 13 billion years ago is essential to understanding our cosmic origins. One of the current hot topics in extragalactic astronomy is 'cosmic reionization,' the process in which the intergalactic gas was ionized (atoms stripped of their electrons).

Cosmic reionization is similar to an unsolved murder: We have clear evidence for it, but who did it, how and when? We now have strong evidence that hydrogen reionization was completed about 13 billion years ago, in the first billion years of the universe, with bubbles of ionized gas slowly growing and overlapping.

The objects capable of creating such ionized hydrogen bubbles have however remained mysterious until now: the discovery of a luminous galaxy in which 60-100 percent of ionizing photons escape, is likely responsible for ionizing its local bubble. This suggests the case is closer to being solved.

The two main suspects for cosmic reionization are usually 1) a population of numerous faint galaxies leaking ~10 percent of their energetic photons, and 2) an 'oligarchy' of luminous galaxies with a much larger percentage (>50 percent) of photons escaping each galaxy.

In either case, these first galaxies were very different from those today: galaxies in the local universe are very inefficient leakers, with only <2-3 percent of ionizing photons escaping their host. To understand which galaxies governed cosmic reionization, astronomers must measure the so-called escape fractions of galaxies in the reionization era.

The detection of light from excited hydrogen atoms (the so-called Lyman-alpha line) can be used to infer the fraction of escaping photons. On the one hand, such detections are rare because reionization-era galaxies are surrounded by neutral gas which absorbs that signature hydrogen emission.

On the other hand, if this hydrogen signal is detected it represents a 'smoking gun' for a large ionized bubble, meaning we have caught a galaxy reionizing its surroundings. The size of the bubble and the galaxy's luminosity determines whether it is solely responsible for creating this ionized bubble or if unseen accomplices are necessary.

The discovery of a luminous galaxy 800 million years after the Big Bang supports the scenario where an 'oligarchy' of bright leakers emits most of the ionizing photons.

"It is the first time we can point to an object responsible for creating an ionized bubble, without the need for a contribution from unseen galaxies.

Additional observations with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope will enable us to study further what is likely one of the best suspects for the unsolved case of cosmic reionization," said Meyer.
