How Facebook Reacted At Its Annual Conference To The Facebook Live Murder

San Jose, Calif, Apr 20: Three days after a man broadcast himself committing murder on Facebook, the social platform was all about playfulness again.

fbAt the company's annual developer's conference, held in nondescript conference center in downtown San Jose this week, Facebook launched a slew of products and features that encouraged people to use its service to snap images and video of themselves goofing off.

"Photos and videos are becoming more central to how we share than text," Zuckerberg said in his keynote. "So the camera needs to be more central than the text box in all of our apps."

Aside from a single comment by chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in his keynote address Tuesday morning, in which he expressed condolences to the family of the victim and vowed to "do all we can to prevent tragedies," there was almost no mention of the murder, which was posted on Facebook on Easter Sunday. The killer later used Facebook Live to boast about the shooting.

Critics have said that because Facebook has not established a rigorous system of vetting videos and live-streams, the company is creating an environment in which its policies prohibiting the display of graphic content will inevitably be broken and more murders and violent acts will be broadcast. (The company says it is working to improve its procedures after acknowledging it only received reports on the murder video an hour and a half after it was posted).

In the past, Zuckerberg has said that he wants live video to support all the "raw and visceral" ways people communicate. But at this year's F8 developers conference, he made clear his desire to reclaim Facebook as a place where people have fun - and get sucked in.

Much of the conference, which is attended by thousands of engineers, hundreds of journalists, and Facebook clients, reflected the company's eagerness to once again become a site where people express themselves habitually and light-heartedly throughout the day - and to do so through photos and live video.

This is territory that Facebook has lost to more visually oriented social networks such as Snapchat and even the Facebook-owned photo-sharing service Instagram. Indeed, many of the camera features Facebook announced here have already been popularized by Snapchat.

Some of those new products include: An augmented reality camera lets users snap selfies and adorn themselves with giant red tongue or cartoon devil ears in the image. They can send selfies to friends with cartoon rainbows floating above their head, Olympic gold medals on their chest, or cover their faces with a variety of colorful masks.

The company went further than its rivals by opening up its systems so that developers could build on them. Facebook released tools that allow any developer to create such features on a camera app, in live video, and in virtual reality. As an example, Facebook executives showed how developers in different countries and cities could designed custom backdrops for their images, or draw specialized messages on them.

Facebook said it hopes that creating such a hub for developers and designers will accelerate innovation and attract more users to its network.

The social network has reportedly faced double-digit declines in original posts, as younger users in the United States have migrated to Snapchat and Instagram. The company's growth is largely outside driven by people outside the United States. For many, the days when it felt natural to log onto Facebook to express something random or informal - vent about your latest frustration at work, say, or share a silly memory - are long over. Many people use Facebook to post news about major life events like an engagement or a death, but prefer other networks for more casual communications.

Facebook sees visual communication as the way to reverse those declines. The company is making video posts bigger in its scrolling news feed, and adding ways for Android users to continue to view thumbnail-size Facebook videos even while are using others apps. Users can now stream Facebook videos directly to their televisions, a new feature that hints at the company's ambitions in live TV. The company also introduced group video hangouts, and showcased examples of ways people can make video watching more social and interactive. For example, a theater group in Latin America recently streamed a live soap opera, or telenovela, in which the audience was able to change the plot in real-time by voting.

In a bid to help struggling small businesses in Covid-19 times, Facebook has introduced Shops to help set up a single online store for customers to access on both Facebook and Instagram.

While Facebook Shops is being rolled out from Wednesday, the company will introduce Instagram Shop, a new way to discover and buy products in Instagram Explore, this summer, starting in the US.

The social networking giant also announced that it will invest in features across its family of apps to inspire people to shop and make buying and selling online easier.

"Creating a Facebook Shop is free and simple. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalogue and then customise the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colours that showcase their brand," Facebook said in a statement late Tuesday.

Any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it's convenient for them.

People can find Facebook Shops on a business' Facebook Page or Instagram profile, or discover them through stories or ads.

"From there, you can browse the full collection, save products you're interested in and place an order — either on the business' website or without leaving the app if the business has enabled checkout in the US," informed the company.

Last month, Facebook announced $40 million in grants for 10,000 small businesses in the US to help them get through these challenging time.

The grants will go to small businesses in 34 locations where Facebook employees live and work.

The company said that in Facebook Shops, users will be able to message a business through WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct to ask questions, get support, track deliveries and more.

In the future, they will be able to view a business' shop and make purchases right within a chat in WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct.

Later this year, Facebook will add a new shop tab in the navigation bar, so people can get to Instagram Shop in just one tap.

Facebook said it is making it easier to shop for products in real time.

Soon, sellers, brands and creators will be able to tag products from their Facebook Shop or catalogue before going live and those products will be shown at the bottom of the video so people can easily tap to learn more and purchase.

"We're starting to test this with businesses on Facebook and Instagram, and we'll roll it out more broadly in the coming months," said the company.

Facebook is also working with partners like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, ChannelAdvisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube and Feedonomics to support small businesses.

Soon, you may be able to withdraw cash from an ATM without touching any part of the machine. AGS Transact Technologies, a provider of cash and digital payment solutions and automation technology, on Monday said it has successfully developed and tested a touchless ATM solution in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ‘contactless' solution, currently under demo at interested banks, enables a customer to perform all the steps required to withdraw cash from an ATM using the mobile app itself. 

The customer simply has to scan the QR code displayed on the ATM screen and follow the directions on their respective bank's mobile application. 

This includes entering the amount and mPIN required to dispense the cash from the ATM machine. 

According to the company, the QR code feature makes cash withdrawals quicker and more secure, and negates the chances of compromising the ATM Pin or card skimming.

"The new Touchless ATM solution is an extension of the flagship QR Cash solution which ensures safety of the users and will provide a seamless cash withdrawal experience with enhanced security," said Ravi B. Goyal, Chairman and MD, AGS Transact Technologies Ltd.

With minimum investment, the banks can enable this solution for their ATM networks by upgrading the existing software.

AGSTTL has so far installed, maintained and managed a network of over 72,000 ATMs across the country and also provides customised solutions to leading banks. 

The company earlier introduced UPI-QR based Cash withdrawal solution in partnership with Bank of India. 

This is how the solution works.

Open the Bank mobile application on your smartphone and select QR Cash Withdrawal. Enter the amount you wish to withdraw on the mobile app and scan the QR code on the ATM screen.

Next, confirm the amount by clicking on ‘proceed' in the app and enter the mPin to authenticate the transaction. Now collect the cash and receipt and you are done.

"The seamless, cardless and touchless withdrawal method is designed to provide easy transaction flow, without the need to touch the ATM screen or enter the pin," said Mahesh Patel, President and Group Chief Technology Officer, AGS Transact Technologies.

Chennai, Jun 22: Commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment for five convicts, the Madras High Court on Monday set free Chinnasamy, the main convict, who had also been sentenced to death in the Udumalpet Shankar honour killing case.

A Division Bench comprising Justice M. Sathyanarayanan and Justice M. Nirmal Kumar also dismissed the appeal by the state police against the acquittal of three persons by a lower court.

The Bench ordered the five convicts sentenced for life to undergo a jail term of not less than 25 years.

In 2016, V. Shankar, who had married C. Kausalya, was killed by a gang in Udumalpet in Tamil Nadu. The gang also injured Kausalya in the attack.

It was alleged the parents of Kausalya -- Chinnasamy, Annalakshmi -- were against the marriage.

P. Pandidurai, the uncle of Kausalya at the behest of Chinnasamy and Annalakshmi had hired a gang to kill Shankar.

The gang killed Shankar in broad daylight in a public place and Kausalya too got injured in the attack as she tried to save her husband.

The Principal District and Sessions Court in Tiruppur had convicted and sentenced to death six accused persons -- Chinnasamy, P. Jagadeesan, P. Selvakumar, M. Manikandan, M. Mathan alias Michael and P. Kalaithamilvaanan.

The court also sentenced two other accused, K. Dhanraj for life and Manikandan to a five year jail term, while acquitting Annalakshmi, Pandidurai and Prasanna.

The convicts had filed an appeal against their sentence in the Madras High Court while the police filed an appeal against the acquittal of three persons.
