Bengaluru, Jul 23: In a tragic incident, a 37-year-old man lost his life and his 33-year-old wife was hospitalised after the childless couple consumed tablets given by a self-proclaimed ‘ayurvedic doctor’ to help them conceive.

The deceased is Shashidhar, a resident of Arisinakunte village near Nelamangala who was running a grocery shop. Shashidhar and his wife Gangambika suffered severe loose motion on Sunday night after consuming the tablets and were rushed by neighbours to a hospital.

While Shashidhar breathed his last in hospital, Gangambika is still undergoing treatment.

It is learnt that the couple got married in 2008 and didn’t have children. Nelamangala town police said a customer told Shashidhar he knew an ayurvedic doctor who could treat them and help them have a child.

The couple contacted the ‘doctor’ and requested him to treat them. Three unknown persons, including the one who claimed to be an ayurvedic doctor, arrived at Shashidhar’s shop in a car on Sunday night.

“The trio assured the couple they would be blessed with children if they take some tablets, and demanded Rs 25,000 for the treatment. The couple took two tablets from the trio and paid them Rs 2,000. The trio said they would return in the morning and asked the couple to arrange for the rest of the money for more tablets,” a police officer said.

The couple consumed one tablet each in the night, but soon fell ill.

“We registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under IPC section 304, based on Nagambika’s statement. We have formed teams to trace the trio and will arrest them,” a police officer said.

He said the autopsy could shed light on the nature of the medicine given to the couple.
