Hyderabad tense as OU students clash with police

Hyderabad, September 30: A confrontation between students of Osmania University and the police on Sunday morning raised tension levels in the State capital, which is all set to witness the Telangana March called by Telangana Joint Action Committee and supported by various parties and organisations to press for bifurcation of the state.

Tension gripped the sunny Sunday morning in Hyderabad as groups of students attempted to break through a cordon of police personnel in riot gear arguing that they wanted to join the Telangana March on Necklace Road. The police however refused to allow them to leave the campus, leading to stone pelting by students and retaliatory lobbing of tear gas shells by the police. As news of the clash spread, atmosphere in other parts of the city also charged up.

A group of elected representatives including MPs and MLCs of the ruling party rushed to the Chief Minister’s camp office in Begumpet to “protest” against police action. As surprised police contingents moved into the high security zone to cordon off the Chief Minister’s camp office, MPs began shouting at them demanding that they be taken to Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy. The protestors were later taken into preventive custody.

Meanwhile, the Ganesh idol immersion which was to expected to be completed by Sunday morning, was still continuing on Tank Bund and NTR Marg side of the Necklace Road. The Telangana March is to take place between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sanjeevaiah Park side. People from Secunderabad have arrived at the march site.

Security has been stepped up across the city, near buildings and business centres and on the outskirts, in the wake of the burning of a toll plaza on the Outer Ring Road allegedly by the activists of the Telangana United Front (TUF) two days ago.

Anticipating trouble, the South Central Railway has cancelled more than a dozen express trains and 25 passenger trains either originating or passing through Hyderabad on Sunday. All local and MMTS trains have also been cancelled.

Gujarat massacre: SC fixes April 14 for hearing Zakia Jafri’s plea against SIT’s clean chit to Modi

New Delhi, Feb 4: Saying the matter had been adjourned many times and it will have to hear it someday, the Supreme Court on Tuesday fixed April 14 for hearing a plea by Zakia Jafri, wife of slain MP Ehsan Jafri, challenging the SIT's clean chit to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riots.

A bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari posted the matter for hearing in April after Zakia's counsel sought an adjournment and urged the court to post it after the Holi vacation.

When advocate Aparna Bhat, appearing for Zakia, told the court that the issue in the matter is contentious, the bench said, "It has been adjourned so many times, whatever it is, we will have to hear it someday. Take one date and make sure you all are available." Zakia had filed a petition in the apex court in 2018 challenging the Gujarat High Court's October 5, 2017 order rejecting her plea against the decision of the Special Investigation Team.

Ehsan Jafri was among the 68 people killed at Gulberg Society on February 28, 2002, a day after the S-6 Coach of the Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra killing 59 people and triggering riots in Gujarat.

On February 8, 2012, the SIT filed a closure report giving a clean chit to Modi and 63 others, including senior government officials, saying there was "no prosecutable evidence" against them.

Accepting defeat, Alka Lamba says Hindu-Muslim votes were ‘polarised’

New Delhi, Feb 11: Votes between Hindus and Muslims were ''completely polarised'', said Congress party's Alka Lamba, as she trailed at Chandni Chowk assembly seat on Tuesday.

"I accept the result, but don't give up. Hindu-Muslim votes were completely polarised. The #Congress Party will now have to prepare for a new fight with new faces and a long struggle for the people of #Delhi. If you fight today, you will also win tomorrow," Ms. Lamba tweeted in Hindi.

As per the Election Commission (EC) website, Ms. Lamba is in third position with just 1,229 votes so far. AAP's Parlad Singh Sawhney is ahead with 23,281 votes followed by Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP.

Ms. Lamba, who had won from Chandni Chowk on an AAP ticket in the 2015 polls, was expelled from AAP last year after she joined Congress, citing differences with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As per the EC official trends, AAP is maintaining a strong lead on 58 seats, while the BJP is far behind at 12. Congress has failed to open its account so far.

The counting of votes for 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly began at 8 am today amid tight security.

Delhi went to polls in a single-phase on February 8. AAP, BJP, Congress are the main political parties in the fray.

Dalit teen shot dead by upper caste men after he tried to enter temple

Bijnor: A 17-year-old Dalit youth was shot dead by four miscreants belonging to the upper caste of Hinduism after the former tried to enter a temple in Uttar Pradesh.

The deceased was identified as Vikas Jatav. The accused had tried to stop the deceased from entering into a temple.

On being stopped from entering the temple located in Domkhera village, Jatav raised and objection and started arguing with the accused.

The accused were identified as - Lala Chauhan, Horam Chauhan, Bhushan and Jasveer. The incident took place on May 31, according to the father of the deceased.

How it happened
On May 31, Jatav went to a temple in Domkhera to offer his prayers. The four accused, however, did not let him go inside. Following this, an argument broke out between the accused and the 17-year-old boy.

On the same day, the victim approached the police and lodged a complaint in relation to the incident. The police, however, did not take any action against the accused men.

Late night on Saturday, Jatav was sleeping inside his house when the four men barged in and opened fire at him.

Hearing the gunshots, Jatav's family rushed to rescue him, following which, the accused escaped. Vikas was profusely bleeding after being shot and succumbed to the injuries before he could reach the hospital.

Lala Chauhan and Horam were nabbed by the police while the other two are still at large. The four accused have been booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST Act.
