I am not going to bend: Dr Kafeel Khan after attack on younger brother

Gorakhpur, Jun 11: A day after his brother was shot at by unidentified assailants, Dr Kafeel Khan, who was allegedly made scapegoat by Yogi Adiyanath led Uttar Pradesh government in the case of death of dozens of children at BRD Medical Hospital, today said he was not going to bend.

His brother, Kashif Jameel, was operated on successfully and the bullets removed, Khan said.

"Allah rahem kare. M not going to bend," Khan, who was jailed last September and was released on bail in April this year, said on Twitter.

"Firstly, I would like to thank all of you, as the bullets have been removed from my brother Kashif's body, and the operation has been successful. He is currently in ICU. Three bullets were shot at him in order to kill him. Who has fired, we do not know. But it was 500 metres from Gorakhnath Temple, where the UP Chief Minister was staying," he said.

He added that two boys came on a scooty, fired at his brother and fled.

"This is the state of law and order," Khan said, blaming the police for the delay in treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur, Shalabh Mathur said, "A case has been registered against unidentified persons. Police is investigating all possible aspects."

Jameel, 34, was shot at, allegedly by unidentified bike-borne assailants, around 11 pm yesterday at the Humayunpur north area near the JP hospital. He was rushed to a private nursing home where his condition was stated to be stable, the police said.

Jameel sustained injuries on his right upper arm, neck and chin, Kotwali police station inspector Ghanshyam Tiwari said.

Dr Kafeel Khan, who shot to fame after the Gorakhpur’s government run BRD medical tragedy when he arranged for oxygen cylinders for children dying in the encephalitis ward with the disruption in oxygen supply last year, was soon made a villain by the Yogi Adityanath led BJP government of Uttar Pradesh and booked as one of the accused in the case.

He was sent to jail in September 2017 and has been released on bail by the high court only recently in April, after the court found no evidence to prove medical negligence on part of Dr Kafeel Khan in dispelling his duties to save the children.

He had recently volunteered to serve in the Nipah virus hit Kerala and was invited by the chief minister of Kerala to offer his services. This was later turned down, just when Dr Kafeel Khan was about to board the flight to Kerala, with some doctors in Kerala opposing Dr Kafeel Khan’s intervention.

Amit Shah unveils 5.5 lakh ‘thank you’ letters to PM Modi on CAA

Ahmedabad, Jan 12: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday unveiled over 5.5 lakh postcards written by Ahmedabad residents to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thanking him for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The postcards were stacked on the dais as Shah addressed a gathering of BJP workers who formed letters `C A A’ in front of him.

The state BJP claimed that the party’s “largest awareness campaign” in support of the CAA had found a place in Limca Book of Records and World Record of India.

“It is not just words but a letter of thanks written from the heart. Our public outreach programme is a reply to the lies being spread against the CAA,” Shah said addressing BJP workers from his former Assembly constituency Naranpura.

The BJP had promised to enact the CAA in its manifesto, he said, asking why the Congress did not oppose it then.

Targeting Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Shah said, “Congress has a government in Rajasthan. The Congress party in that state had promised that Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan would be given citizenship.

“Why do you oppose it when we fulfill the promise made by you?” the Union home minister asked.

“In 2006 and 2009, Ashok Gehlot wrote a letter for the same. We covered Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians, all of them under the Act, you had only mentioned Hindus and Sikhs,” Shah claimed.

Saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, by bringing in the CAA, granted “human rights to lakhs of people”, he asked why opposition was against it.

He challenged “Rahul Baba” (Congress leader Rahul Gandhi), Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal to show if any provision of the CAA took away the citizenship of Indian Muslims.

“There is no such provision. Lakhs and crores of people have come to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh to save their religion, their self-respect, to save themselves. Where else will they go?” he asked.

“From the first prime minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru to the first home minister, first president of the country, and Mahatma Gandhi himself had said that whoever comes to India from Pakistan will be granted citizenship. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains coming from Pakistan have nowhere else to go,” he said.

8 patients dead after fire breaks out in Ahmedabad Covid-19 hospital

Ahmedabad, Aug 6: In a major incident, a fire broke out in a Covid-designated hospital in Ahmedabad killing eight coronavirus patients. The mishap occurred in the wee hours of Thursday.

All the victims were in the ICU ward, where the fire is said to have started. Officials said that they all died on the spot while 41 other patients were shifted to other hospitals following a rescue operation. One paramedic staff of the hospital who tried to douse the fire sustained burn injuries.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who is also the health minister, said that primary information has revealed that fire was caused by the short circuit in the ICU ward where eight patients were under treatment.

He said that 41 other patients were shifted to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel hospital. The incident happened at Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura which is one of the Covid-19 designated hospitals. Over 300 patients have recovered at the hospital in the last two months.

Among the victims were five men and three women. They have been identified as Arif Mansuri, Narendra Shah, Manu Rami, Leelvati Shah, Navneet Shah, Jyoti Sindhi, Manu Rami and Ayesha Tirmizi

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Saddened by the tragic hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to CM @vijayrupanibjp Ji and Mayor
@ibijalpatel Ji regarding the situation. Administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected."

Soon after the tweet, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered a probe into the matter to be conducted by Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Home, Sangeeta Singh and ACS (Urban Development) Mukesh Puri.

They have been asked to submit a report in three days. Meanwhile, the hospital building has been sealed for further investigation.

The chief minister has ordered a report within three days.

No mass prayers in Kerala mosques this Ramadan

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: The month of Ramzan will be observed from Friday in Kerala.
The crescent moon was seen at Kappad beach in Kozhikode on Thursday.

Amid nationwide lockdown in the wake of COVID-19, there will be no group prayers at mosques. The devotees have been directed to offer prayers at homes.

Palayam Mosque Imam, VP Suhaib said, "Usually at mosques in Thiruvananthapuram, devotees used to come to break the fast... But this year, amid lockdown, we direct people to prepare food at home and break the fast with family. Also, there will not be group prayers at mosques. People should pray at home."
"Imams and scholars have strictly directed people to observe all Ramzan-related prayers at home. There is no other option... Human life is the most important thing. Only if life exists, belief and religion can exist," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on March 24 announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19. Later, the lockdown was extended till May 3.
