I am Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter: Priyanka’s reply to Modi

Amethi/New Delhi, May 1: “I am Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter,” was Priyanka Gandhi terse reply on Friday to purported comments by Narendra Modi that he considers her as his daughter. Ms. Gandhi, who is on a campaign trail in Amethi, reacted sharply when she was asked by reporters to comment on purported remarks by the BJP prime ministerial candidate that she was like a daughter to him. “Main Rajiv Gandhi ki beti hoon’( I am Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter),” she said. Ms. Gandhi was in her SUV and halted briefly to shake hands with some supporters. Initially she did not answer the question but later came out of the SUV and with a stern face replied to the query and left without answering any other question.

Ms. Gandhi’s curt reply came even as senior Congress leader and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said he was not sure if the Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter will consider the Gujarat Chief Minister as a “father figure”.

“I am happy that Narendra Modi considers Priyanka Gandhi as his daughter but I am not sure if she will be happy to consider Modi as a father figure,” he said. Mr. Chidambaram was reacting to questions at a news conference in Delhi over Mr. Modi’s purported comments in an interview to Doordarshan that he considers Ms. Gandhi is daughter. Some portions of the interview, including Mr. Modi’s “daughter” comments on Ms. Gandhi, were reportedly not telecast. Mr. Chidamabaram said he was not aware of what was said and what was edited.

He said his own recent interview to a television channel underwent some editing as “that is prerogative of the editor” of the news channel in terms of the schedule and size of the programme. Mr. Modi’s interview was telecast on April 27, reportedly two days after it was recorded, following a buzz in social media that it was being dropped.

During the interview, Mr. Modi is reported to have said that over the years he had been “blacked-out” by the Doordarshan Kendra in Gujarat and he was surprised to get a request from the public broadcaster.

Pune/Mumbai, Feb 21: A BJP youth wing leader from Pune on Thursday submitted a complaint application to the police against AIMIM leader Waris Pathan for his controversial remarks made recently in Karnataka.

Pathan has claimed he has been quoted out of context.

Parismal Deshpande, a BJYM worker, submitted the written application at the Deccan Gymkhana police station, demading action against Pathan for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and outraging religious feelings of a community.

Deshpande, in his complaint stated, that Pathan reportedly said "15 crore hai lekin 100 crore pe bhari hai' (We are 15 crore but we can dominate 100 crore).

"The statement by Pathan promotes violence and create a divide between two communities.

"Because of such statements, there are possibilities of atmosphere getting vitiated. Hence, he should be booked under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups, 295A (outraging religious feelings), and 504 (provoking breach of the peace)," Deshpande said in the complaint.

An officer from the Deccan police station confirmed receiving the application.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the BJP slammed Pathan.

The saffron party on Thursday tweeted @BJP4Maharashtra saying, "Waris Pathan, who are you threatening to? Shiv Sena led government may tolerate your comments; but BJP and people of Maharashtra will teach you a lesson that your hate- mongering speeches will be shut."

However, Pathan has issued a statement to the media, saying he has been quoted out of context.

"I hereby wish to state that the media reports on TV channels showing my statement made in the public meeting at Gulbarga five days back have totally quoted me out of context," Pathan claimed on late Thursday evening.

"I wish to reiterate that I can never say anything intentionally or unintentionally that hurts the sentiments of any caste, community or gender. I am a proud Indian and respects the plurality of this country," he said.

New Delhi, Jan 7: The Delhi Police has filed an FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others for allegedly attacking security guards and vandalising the server room of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 4.

The police registered the FIR on January 5.

In the complaint filed by the JNU administration, the University alleged that the accused were involved in physical violence and pushed the women guards, verbally abused them and threatened them of dire consequences if they opened the lock of university's communication and information (CIS) office.

"They illegally trespassed the University property with the criminal intention to damage the public property. They damaged servers and made it dysfunctional. They also damaged fiber optic power supplies and broke the biometric systems inside the room," the University officials alleged.

This incident allegedly occurred a day before Aishe Ghosh, other JNU students and teachers were attacked by a masked mob inside the campus.
