I have no faith in CBI, Gauri's mother tells CM

Bengaluru, Sep 10: Indira Lankesh, the mother of slain journalist-activist Gauri Lanakesh, says she has no faith in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“Let the state set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case,” she told Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday. She met the chief minister to urge him to provide justice to her daughter by arresting her killers. She was accompanied by K S Vimala of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane. 

Siddaramaiah responded positively and said the government was committed to conducting a fair investigation. 

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has spoken to Siddaramaiah over the phone and sought details of the case and the progress in the investigation.

Gauri was shot at point blank at her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, West Bengaluru, on September 5.

Indira Lankesh's words are very serious and an eye opener to us. When premier agencies like CBI, NIA & Police Dept are used as a weapon to silence the oppressed, marginalised, minorities and to protect communal goons of one Political Party, naturally people lose faith in these institutions. This is the time for these institutions for introspection and act impartially before being considered as national Disgrace by the general public.

Shivamogga, May 21: A quarantine facility at Bapuji Nagar in Shivamogga on Wednesday evening was vandalised, by a group of people. leading to chaos.

The police had to resort to baton-charge to control the situation.

Locals were opposing the facility, which is being used to isolate travellers from different states in the view of coronavirus.

Deputy Commissioner KB Sivakumar said that the police department will investigate and book a case against the protesters.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside, informed the state's Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol on Friday. 

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside. 

The government has provided relief to 11,722 families at a rate of Rs 5,000 per family. These beneficiaries will be directly credited to their bank account through Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation.

This special package will help livelihoods for skilled workers, said the Deputy Chief Minister. He congratulated the Chief Minister on the declaration of this special package on behalf of the Department of Social Welfare.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.
