IIM-Bengaluru faculty, students seek fresh probe into Tabrez Ansari lynching

Bengaluru, Sept 18: A section of faculty and students of the state-run Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order a fresh inquiry into the death of 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari on June 22 due to alleged mob lynching on June 17 in Jharkhand's Kharsawan district village.

"We the faculty, staff and students of IIM-B express shock and dismay over how the Jharkhand police has handled the lynching of Ansari. We urge you to act swiftly by directing the Jharkhand government to institute a fresh probe," said the letter.

According to IIM-B Associate Professor Deepak Malghan, 16 faculty, 85 students and non-teaching staff of the business school signed the letter, seeking Modi's intervention, as "it was the constitutional duty of the state to protect the life and liberty of all its citizens".

The letter was circulated on September 12 in the B-school campus through an e-mail by a professor with a covering note that "as an academic community, it is important that we stand up to the impunity with which the state has abrogated its constitutional duty."

The Jharkhand police decision to convert the murder case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) into a culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304 of the IPC prompted the academic community to make the appeal to Modi.

The heinous crime took place around midnight on June 17 at Kadamdia village, 15km from Seraikela town in Kharsawan district and 150km from Jharkhand capital Ranchi.

Ansari succumbed to death on June 22 in judicial custody from the serious injuries sustained in the lynching, nearly two months after he married on April 27. He was working as a welder at Pune in western Maharashtra.

According to the first information report, filed on July 29 by local police, the 11 accused who were arrested are from the neighbouring Dhatkidih village.

A video grab of the lynching, aired on news channels, showed Ansari thrashed with iron rods while tied to a pole and forced to chant "Jai Shri Rama and "Jai Hanuman" over an alleged theft.

Ansari's widow Shahista Parvez also sought a judicial inquiry into the unnatural death as he could not get timely medical treatment to his injuries.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has directed Minorities Department officials to take steps for tabling the Karnataka Lokayukta report on alleged irregularities in wakf properties in Karnataka, during the next session of the State legislature.

Following the Anwar Manipaddi report on alleged irregularities in wakf properties, the Lokayukta conducted the probe. The Siddaramaiah government rejected both the Anwar Manipaddi report and the Lokayukta report.

The Chief Minister issued the directions to officials during a review of the department works on Tuesday, said an official press release. The Lokayukta reportedly named several Congress leaders and senior officers in the scam.

The Lokayukta conducted the probe and submitted the report containing 15 volumes to the State government during the Siddaramaiah government’s tenure.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and admitted himself to a hospital.

"I have been tested positive for COVID-19 and also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution. I request all those who had come in contact with me to check out for symptoms and to quarantine themselves," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Earlier on Sunday, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had said that he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

4,752 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Monday, taking total cases to 1,39,571 including 62,500 discharges and 2,594 deaths, the State Health Department informed.
