'Impossible to cover Baahubali's costs with one language release'

July 10, 2015

Chennai, Jul 10: Filmmaker SS Rajamouli, whose much-awaited film Baahubali hits the screens on Friday, has said that a film's creative success scores over its box office. He further added that Baahubali is his tribute to Indian epic Mahabharata.

"I'm usually not motivated by money. When my films succeed creatively, that's my biggest achievement. The creative satisfaction I get from my films matters to me the most than box office numbers," said Rajamouli.

Although he admits film economics is important, he says that's not what drives him to make films.

Baahubali, which is touted as one of India's most expensive films at Rs 250 crore (nearly $40 million), is Rajamouli's "tribute to Indian epic Mahabharata."

"One of the biggest inspirations behind Baahubali is Mahabharata. The epic war drama between the Pandavas and Kauravas has always fascinated me," he said, adding that the Amar Chitra Katha comics too helped him envision the world of Baahubali.

The film, originally made in Telugu and Tamil, will also release in Hindi and Malayalam in dubbed versions.

Asked why he chose to release the film in multiple languages, he said: "Given the budget of the film, it's impossible to recover the cost involved if we release in one language. Right from the start, the plan was to make it as a Tamil-Telugu bilingual. Hence, we cast actors who are popular in both the industries.

"Following the success of Eega (Makkhi in Hindi), we had planned to release Baahubali in Hindi as well."

When the team was looking for someone to release the film in the northern belt, filmmaker Karan Johar came on board.

The film is all set to release in a record number of 4,000 screens worldwide.

It took the team nearly three years to complete the first part of the film. With another 120 days of shoot left on the second part, it's expected to hit the screens next year.

Rajamouli says it wasn't easy to stay motivated throughout.

"We struggled towards the end, especially to complete the last 20 percent of the film, as most actors by then had almost given up having shot for over a year. But I always believe the team draws its motivation from the director, so I had to push myself and others without losing my cool," he said.

Despite the long wait, the buzz around Baahubali was always alive. It's perhaps the best marketed south Indian film ever.

"A lot of planning went into all this. Over the last one year, we've been very active on social media platforms. We needed to create the buzz, make audiences -- irrespective of the region -- curious about our film. And the only way to do it was through marketing," he said.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan too has heaped praise on Rajamouli's creation and even wished to be part of it.

Asked if he plans to rope in Big B in the second part of the movie, he said: "I'd love to work with all the stars, provided I have a suitable script for them. I can't approach them just because I want to work with them. For Baahubali, I had decided long back that Prabhas was my hero. I let my script choose my actor and not vice versa.

"It was nice of Bachchan sir to say lovely things about our film."

The film is about the story of two warring brothers for an ancient kingdom. It features Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannah Bhatia in the lead roles.

Mumbai, Jan 9: Actor Juhi Chawla on Wednesday said instead of constantly criticising the government, one should reflect on own conduct and talk about uniting rather than dividing.

The actor attended an event which aimed to counter "Free Kashmir (narrative), anti-India slogans, false propaganda and clear the misconception."

Juhi said as artistes, it's unfair to be questioned about incidents "just for a reaction" when they should be given time to truly understand the situation.

"We are going to work, thinking how to execute our task, then some incident happens somewhere and suddenly the media asks, 'what do you think about this?' We haven't understood the matter, people haven't understood the matter but you need a reaction.

"Let people understand, whether it's NRC or CAA, and what's is it about, why is this being talked about," Juhi told reporters.

The actor said it is sad that people talk about division more than unity.

"Everyone is quick to talk about dividing. Why don't we talk about uniting? Why does everyone say 'what is the government doing, why is it doing this?' but I say if you point one finger there then three fingers are at you.

Los Angeles, Mar 12: Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks has revealed that he and wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The actor couple, currently in Australia to shoot for the pre-production of Baz Luhrmann's untitled Elvis Presley film, decided to get tested after they felt "a bit tired".

"Hey folks Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive," Hanks said in a tweet.

The Academy-award-winning actor said the medical team had already taken over.

"The medical officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks will be tested, observed and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires," Hanks said.

"Not much more to it than one-day at a time approach, no? We will keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves!" Hanks tweeted.

Jun 8: The Shiv Sena has sought to take a different stand on Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s help in ferrying migrants back home in the midst of the nationwide lockdown induced by the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday evening, the actor met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at his residence ‘Matoshree’. The CM’s son and Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Aslam Shaikh were also present during the meeting.

Sonu Sood’s visit to the Shiv Sena supremo’s residence came after Sanjay Raut, one of the most vocal leaders of the party, criticised the actor and sought to draw a BJP link to his help to migrants in order to show the ruling dispensation in poor light.

“Sood is an actor whose profession is to deliver dialogues scripted by someone else and make a living out of it. There are many people like Sood who would promote any political party if paid well,” Raut wrote in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

Referring to the actor’s help to migrants, Raut wondered if the sudden generosity of “Mahatma” Sood in Mumbai was at BJP’s behest and said that he would “soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and become the celebrity manager of Mumbai.”

As Raut’s remarks fuelled a controversy in political circles, Aaditya Thackeray tweeted in praise of Sood in an apparent attempt to distance the party and its leadership from the leader’s remarks.

“This evening Sonu Sood met up with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray ji along with Minister Aslam Shaikh ji and me. Better Together, Stronger Together to assist as many people through as many people. Good to have met a good soul to work for the people together.”

“The CM was glad to meet Sonu Sood and discussed the work everyone is doing for the people during covid relief. Misunderstandings don’t exist but what does is a commitment to help people,” Aaditya tweeted.

Sonu Sood too sought to downplay Raut’s remarks and expressed gratitude to all political parties for having supported him. “They (Shiv Sena) are also supporting it and it’s not about any particular party. We have to support all the people who are suffering. Every party from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari has supported me,” the actor told reporters after his meeting with the Chief Minister.

Sonu Sood has earned immense praise for providing help to stranded migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdown. He has launched a helpline for migrants and has helped hundreds of migrants return to their native places in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
