‘Independent’ Jignesh Mevani gives a blow to BJP in Gujarat; wins from Vadgam

In what can be termed as a major blow to Bharatiya Janta Party, young Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, who had contested the Gujarat Assembly polls from Vadgam constituency as an independent candidate, has emerged victorious.

According to reports Mevani defeated BJP’s Vijay Chakravarti by a huge margin of 18,150 votes in the constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste candidate.

Congress party had backed the 36-year-old leader in Vadgam by not fielding any candidates against him. AAP and SDPI had also campaigned for Mevani.

BJP chief Amit Shah himself had led campaign against Mevani and went on to claim that the latter had received funds from Pakistan.

BJP had also widely circulated the photos of Mevani with SDPI and PFI leaders in Karnataka. According to BJP, PFI and SDPI have links with terror outfits like ISIS. However, the allegation has not been proved so far.

Mevani shot to fame after he organised agitations in the aftermath of reports of atrocities against Dalits in Una district of Gujarat. He led a long march 'Azadi Kooch' demanding land for his community.

Mevani’s political debut was no less than a blockbuster, when back in July, he vanguarded a justice-siege for Dalit youths publicly beaten for skinning a dead cow in Una, Gujarat.

In another hiccup for the Gujarat government, Mevani then organised Dalit protests against the old-age practice of disposing animal carcasses over the Una incident.

Soon after he hit the anti-BJP sentiment, political observers proclaimed him as "The face of resistance against BJP", along-with Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor.

As stated by Hardik Patel, no doubt BJP's victory is because of EVM scam.  If it is ballot paper definitely Congress must have won.

I have a lot of respect for Mevani and his movement, but really, a blow?

The constituency is a Congress stronghold, and Congress did not field a candidate there.

The result was obvious.

Blow to BJP just by one victory? You better call it ‘Kachaguli’ instead of blow. This report is mere bow bow bow. Adige biddru meese melu. Death to anti-nationals

Mangaluru, Jan 10: Two members of a notorious honey-trap gang that used to lure rich men using women and then extort money from them by staging fake police raid have been arrested by the Dakshina Kannada district police.

Lohith, a resident of Kushalnagara, and Sharif from Vittal, were arrested in connection with a honey-trap case registered in Uppinangady police station. Jamal, Jeevan and Naushad, who were also involved in the case, are absconding.

Police said they received information that a few people under the guise of being Kerala police, were planning to raid a resort near Uppinangady where two couples were staying.

They were informed that they would threaten and try to extort money from them. The police were tipped off about the same by their counterparts in Kerala.

Police said the accused are experts in setting honeytraps, and were involved in similar crimes since a long time. Their modus operandi was to use two women from Mangaluru to lure their intended targets.

Once they trap their target, the woman and victim are sent to resorts. They then raid the resort posing as police officials, and click pictures in compromising positions of the victim with the woman.

They threaten to release the pictures on social media or TV channels, if they fail to pay up.

Police said the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from each victim, but they denied to pay up. Irked by this, the accused took away the victims’ belongings such as phone, money and car.

The victims who believed that the accused were police personnel, asked them to take them to the police station. Instead of taking them to the police, the accused took them to a secluded place, where they claimed that they were putting the victims under house arrest. Police have seized an SUV from the accused.

Bengaluru, Jan 30: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who reached the national capital on Thursday, said he will discuss the much-awaited Ministry expansion with the BJP high command.

"It's been long that I visited Delhi. I will meet the party national president J P Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah and take their suggestions on the cabinet expansion," Yediyurappa told reporters.

The chief minister said he will also call on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and discuss about development issues related to Karnataka.

Yediyurappa has been anxiously waiting for the high command's nod to expand his ministry amid intense lobbying by the aspirants.

Opposition parties have been critical of the BJP and Yediyurappa over the delay in cabinet expansion, alleging that he was weak and that the administration had collapsed.

As the chief minister has already made it clear that 11 of the disqualified JDS-Congress MLAs who got re-elected in the bypolls on BJP tickets will be made ministers, lobbying has been on in the party for the remaining ministerial berths.

Currently, there are 18 Ministers, including the chief minister in the cabinet that has a sanctioned strength of 34. Sixteen berths are vacant.
