India breeze into ICC World T20 2014 semi-finals with 8-wicket win over Bangladesh

March 29, 2014

Dhaka, Mar 29: India qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC World T20 2014 with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at Dhaka on March 28. Half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli breezed India to the victory in 18.3 overs. MS Dhoni smashed the winning runs with a trademark six down the ground. India were chasing a 139-run target in the Group 2 Super 10 match in the T20 World Cup.

India_BangladeshMS Dhoni‘s men needed only a win to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after West Indies had beaten Australia earlier in the day. India were hardly troubled in their run-chase by a below-average Bangladesh side.

The first two overs of India’s run-chase only yielded three runs each. The first delivery of the third over was a short delivery from Al-Amin Hossain. Rohit pulled it away for a six over deep square-leg. There was hardly any power behind the shot, still it sailed way into the stands. Dhawan was then bowled by Al-Amin. He came down the track and inside-edged a full delivery onto the stumps in the third over.

Al-Amin bowled a full and wide delivery and Kohli played a brilliant lofted cover-drive and got a six in the fifth over. He actually went down on one knee and got underneath the delivery. Al-Amin was then called harshly for a front-foot no-ball. Rohit hit the free-hit high in the air and was caught at mid-on.

Rohit came down the track to Shakib Al Hasan and hit one over wide mid-on for a four. Next ball, he came forward again and drove one on the up towards deep cover and got consecutive fours. Mashrafe Mortaza came into the attack in the seventh over. He bowled a straight back of a length delivery and Rohit guided it wide of the short third-man fielder and got another four.

In the ninth over, Bangladesh missed a glorious chance to dismiss Rohit. He hit one high in the air off Ziaur Rahman. Two fielders converged at deep mid-wicket and the catch was dropped. Rohit then pulled a short delivery in the air for a four towards deep mid-wicket.

Mushfiqur Rahim threw the ball to Sohag Gazi to bowl his off-spin in the 10th over. Kohli came down the track and whipped one through mid-wicket for a four. Sohag then offered width and Kohli went back and punched the ball wide of the cover fielder and got another four. Kohli got into the 40s with a four towards third-man. Ziaur bowled one outside off-stump and Kohli opened the face of the bat to guide the delivery.

Kohli pulled one from Mahmudullah towards long-leg and got two runs. That was the 100 for India in the 14th over. Rohit then reached his seventh half-century on the last ball of the 14th over with a single. Rohit cut a short and wide delivery from Al-Amin for a four behind point for a four. Kohli soon got to his half-century with a single towards cover.

Bangladesh did get a breakthrough as Rohit flashed at a low full-toss from Mortaza. The ball was caught by Nasir Hossain at point. Rohit had to depart for 56 off 44 deliveries with five fours and one six. That also ended a 100-run partnership between Rohit and Kohli for the second wicket.

Dhoni walked out into bat. He hit a length delivery from Al-Amin high in the air towards long-off. The ball just bounced short of the boundary line and went for a four. He then pulled a wide delivery for a six over wide long-on. Dhoni then hit the wining runs with a six down the ground in the 19th over.

Earlier, India captain Dhoni had won the toss and elected to bowl first. India went in with an unchanged side that beat Pakistan and West Indies in the group. A win for India would see them qualify for the semi-finals. Bangladesh’s innings never saw any real momentum as they kept losing wickets at the wrong time.

They eventually posted a total of 138 for seven in their 20 overs. Anamul Haque top-scored with 44 and Mahmudullah was unbeaten on 33 for Bangladesh. Amit Mishra took three wickets and Ravichandran Ashwin took two. Both the spinners were at one time on a hat-trick. Neither could complete the milestone.

The total did not look enough to halt India and it proved true in the end. Although nine deliveries were remaining, it was far more easy for India. Ashwin was the Man of the Match for his two wickets for 15 runs.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh 138 for 7 in 20 overs (Anamul Haque 44, Mushfiqur Rahim 24, Mahmudullah 33*; Ravichandran Ashwin 2 for 15, Amit Mishra 3 for 26) lost to India 141 for 2 in 18.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 56, Virat Kohli 57*, MS Dhoni 22*) by 8 wickets.

Man of the Match: Ravichandran Ashwin

New Delhi, Jun 2: Manchester United's Paul Pogba on Monday paid tribute to George Floyd, stressing that violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated and they have to stop.

Pogba took to Instagram to write: "During the past few days I have thought a lot about how to express my feelings about what happened in Minneapolis. I felt anger, pity, hatred, indignation, pain, sadness."

"Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism Every day! Whether in football, at work, at school, Anywhere! This has to stop, once and for all! Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end today! Violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated," he added.

Protests erupted in Minneapolis and other US cities on Tuesday after Floyd, an African-American man, died following his arrest by the four officers.

A viral video showed a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning 46-year-old Floyd to the ground with his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd died at a local hospital shortly thereafter.

The four police officers were fired. Chauvin was also charged with murder and manslaughter, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Madrid, Feb 23: Lionel Messi scored four goals and Barcelona reclaimed the top spot in the La Liga as Real Madrid suffered a surprise defeat by Levante last night, a week before the Clasico.

Madrid's nightmare afternoon was made worse by another injury to Eden Hazard, who was forced off in the second half of their 1-0 defeat in Valencia and is now doubtful to face Manchester City on Wednesday in the Champions League.

"It doesn't look good," said Real coach Zinedine Zidane afterwards.

Messi, meanwhile, ridiculed talk of a goal drought by scoring four against Eibar after four games without one, while emergency signing Martin Braithwaite made two assists off the bench, teeing up Messi and then Arthur Melo in injury-time.

Their 5-0 rout, coupled with Madrid's defeat, means Barca move back to the summit of La Liga, two points ahead of Zidane's side ahead of next Saturday's showdown at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It amounts to a considerable shift in momentum, with Barcelona away at Napoli in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

Madrid host City a day later and the plan had been for Hazard to regain form and fitness in what was only his second start since returning from three months out with a broken right foot.

But the Belgian sat in the dug-out with an ice pack around the same foot after going off and Zidane suggested it was a repeat injury after the match. "It can be weak where you've had an injury," he said.

For Madrid, playing catch-up again next weekend will be a particularly heavy psychological blow, especially given the series of off-field problems engulfing Barcelona in recent weeks.

Yet on the pitch, Messi showed no sign of distraction as the 32-year-old completed the second fastest of his now 36 league hat-tricks, after less than 40 minutes at Camp Nou.

"There's nothing left to do but stand up and applaud," Eibar wrote on Twitter afterwards.

"I won't wash my kit after hugging Messi," said Braithwaite.

Braithwaite's arrival from Leganes drew criticism after Barcelona capitalised on a curious La Liga rule that allows clubs to sign outside of the transfer window if they have lost a player to serious injury.

Brilliant Messi

Messi quickly got to work, scoring a brilliant first goal in the 14th minute after collecting the ball centrally, around 30 yards out. He had three Eibar defenders in front of him but found a way through, nutmegging Anaitz Arbilla before chipping delicately into the corner.

The second came in the 37th minute as Sergio Busquets found Arturo Vidal, who feathered a flick into Messi's path. Messi surged forward, past his stumbling opponents, and fired in.

His third, three minutes later, was the simplest of the trio and arrived only after he tried to play in Antoine Griezmann. His generosity was rewarded as a sloppy Griezmann touch meant the ball cannoned back to Messi, who apologetically poked in.

Coach Quique Setien was able to take Griezmann off with 18 minutes left and introduce Braithwaite for his debut. Braithwaite's first contribution was a skewed cross but things improved immeasurably from there, as two passes across goal gave Messi his fourth and Arthur his first.

Madrid were never in control of a chaotic contest against Levante but might have taken the lead if Hazard had done better with a long ball over the top from Marcelo, which he failed to control and then scuffed into the hands of Aitor Fernandez.

He limped off and Madrid lost their way, finally punished with 11 minutes left by a straight ball through to Morales. Luka Modric, exposed on the right side of Madrid's defence, was unable to recover and Morales caught Courtois by surprise by firing early past the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Jun 20: Bengaluru FC (BFC) have signed Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva for a one-year deal, the ISL club said in a statement on Saturday.

As per the agreement, BFC have the option of extending Silva's contract for another year.

The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent the better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League.

His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn't materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move.

"I've signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city," said Silva.

Silva, thus, became BFC's first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals with Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva's addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring.

"Cleiton has a proven track record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we're looking forward to working with him," he said.
