India must regain its lost glory in education: President Pranab Mukherjee

President_Pranab_MukherjeeNew Delhi, May 13: President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said India "must regain" the lost glory of its educational institutions and once again become a centre for "cross fertilization of ideas from across the world."

Addressing a delegation from QS, ICAA, British Council, FICCI and KPMG who presented the first copy of "QS University Rankings: Asia 2014" to Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan here Monday, the president said India will "sooner than later find its rightful place in the global ranking of higher education institutions." "Indian educational institutions dominated the world for a period of around 1800 years from 6th century B.C. to 13th century A.D. and were a magnet for scholars from all over the world," the president said.

"India must regain the lost glory of the past and once again become a centre for cross fertilization of ideas from across the world," he added. Asserting that he had always emphasized on the need for country's educational institutions to improve their global rankings, Mukherjee expressed happiness that the "efforts were bearing fruit" as the number of Indian institutions in the ranking had increased to 17 this year as compared to 11 in 2013.

The president assured the delegation that Indian authorities would "extend all possible cooperation" to them in obtaining necessary information in the appropriate format from Indian higher education institutions. The institutions should be transparent and all relevant information should be published in their websites, he said.

The Alumni Association members along with the members of Women’s Cell organized a programme to celebrate Women’s day and felicitate the student achievers in various fields.

The programme began with a prayer song by the members of the Women’s cell. Among the dignitaries were Sr Dr M Jeswina A.C, Principal, St Agnes College, Mrs Geanette Dsouza, Vice President, Agnesian Alumni Association, Ms Vivid Dsouza, Convenor of the programme and Secretary Agnesian Alumni Association, Mrs Jyothi Cutinha, Joint Secretary Agnesian Alumni Association. 

The college president, Ms Jerusha Maben welcomed the gathering followed by a welcome dance. The student achievers of the college were honoured by the Agnesian Alumni Association;

Agnesian Outstanding Leader Award sponsored by Mrs Carol Pais in honour of her parents Mr Philip and Mrs Mariette Pais is awarded to Ms Jerusha Maben of III BCom.

Agnesian All-Rounder Award sponsored by Mrs Marjorie Texeira is awarded to Ms Anna Una Crasta of II MA English.

Agnesian Scholar Award sponsored by Dr Meera Aranha is awarded to Ms Shane Joveeta Jovet of III BCom.

Agnesian Best Sports Woman Award sponsored by Mrs Daisy Coelho is awarded to Ms Anusha K.J of III BSc.

Agnesian Best NSS Volunteer is awarded to Nerissa Clementina Noronha of III BCom.

Agnesian Best NCC Cadet Award (Army Wing) is awarded to CPL Melani Lobo of III BCom.

Agnesian Best NCC Cadet Award (Air Wing) is awarded to CWO Vanditha Anusha Dsouza of III BSc.

Sr Dr M Jeswina AC presided over the programme congratulated all the student achievers and wished them the best.

The core objective of the new National Education Policy (NEP), which has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts, will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework, CBSE director said on Friday.

CBSE Director Biswajit Saha made the comments during an e-conclave on the new NEP organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The core objective of the policy will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), which needs more participatory approach. The policy has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts and multidisciplinary approach. The NCF will give a roadmap for implementation of reforms laid down in the policy,” he said.

Saha said the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders.

“There could be a debate about the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes but once we have decided we want to do it, it can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders. It is a forward-looking policy,” the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) director said.

The NEP approved by the Union Cabinet replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower.

Choice between 3 or 4 year undergraduate courses, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, adding 3.5 crore seats in higher education institutions, which will now have a single regulator, discontinuation of M.Phil programmes and fixation of fees are among the higher education reforms outlined in the new NEP.

The Department of Business Administration organised a Webinar on Career Planning and Development for the Under Graduate and PUC students of various colleges on 23 May 2020. Sr Dr Venissa A.C, Principal, inaugurated the programme and conveyed her best wishes. Mr Abhilash K, Managing Director of Abhijnya Education Private Limited was the Resource speaker.

Mr Abhilash said that a student should assess themselves, evaluate their career skills, set career goals in order to implement and maximise their career plan. He listed out the various courses available after completion of PUC/Degree. He also said that the students need to create their own future, assess their strengths, build personality and explore various options available to build their own career. He gave a few tips on how to prepare for the various competitive exams and manage time.

The Webinar had 125 participants from various colleges who actively participated by asking their doubts on Career Planning. The programme was conducted on Google Meet. Dr Neethu Suraj, Assistant Professor of BBA welcomed the Resource speaker and the participants, Mr Elson Dsouza Assistant Professor of BBA delivered the vote of thanks and Mrs Sabina Dsouza HOD of BBA coordinated the programme.
