Indian Premier League 2015: Duminy set to lead Delhi in IPL 2015

March 27, 2015

Mar 27: South Africa’s explosive left-handed batsman JP Duminy has been chosen to lead the Delhi Daredevils in this year’s Indian Premier League. He succeeds Kevin Pietersen, who is also one of the 13 players not bought back by the franchise in February’s auction due to their rebuilding strategy, having finished at the bottom of the points table last year.

duminiHowever, Duminy is one of the few players who will be playing for the second consecutive season for Delhi and was preferred over World Cup winning Indian allrounder Yuvraj Singh and current Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews.

Like last year, Yuvraj was once again the most sought-after player in the world by all the franchise and managed to fetch Rs.16 crore. Delhi had the biggest purse than all the other teams, and used that to their advantage with the aim of finding the right balance for the team.

Yuvraj has had past experience in leading an IPL team, notably Kings XI Punjab in 2008 and 2009 and Pune Warriors India in 2011. Plus his match-winning ability and the aura he possesses in the minds of the younger Indian players can hardly be questioned.

Yet, the Daredevils management wasn’t entirely on board of handing the captaincy to him and instead found the reasons for selecting Duminy more apt. Hemant Dua, CEO of Delhi Daredevils, is of the opinion that Duminy is the "right choice" as he is a "composed individual and well respected by his teammates and peers."

In the past, Duminy had clearly harboured captaincy ambitions for South Africa and in fact did lead them in the three-match Twenty20 series against Australia in November 2014 as stand-in captain for Faf du Plessis.

The advantage Duminy gives to the side this year is the fact that he is in line with the vision that the franchise has, having already played for them last year and thoroughly understanding the set-up. Plus he has had a very solid professional bonding with head coach Gary Kirsten, as the two have worked together for South Africa as well was for the Cape Cobras in South African domestic cricket.

Their mutual respect has been very evident as Kirsten has been one of Duminy’s biggest backers over the years, believing that he has both, talent and attitude to be considered an X-factor for the Proteas.

Many who know a lot about South African cricket are aware that Duminy has been an integral part of South Africa’s leadership group for a while now, even if he hasn’t been declared leader officially. An immensely likeable guy, Duminy was also named the president of the influential South African Players' Association.

"JP is the right choice to lead the team for the upcoming season," Kirsten said in a media release. "He has the necessary experience and demeanour to take the team forward. I have seen him progress and mature as a player and leader through the years with the South African national team."

If all that wasn’t convincing enough, Duminy also has present form and past records on his side. He was the Daredevils' best batsman by far the previous season with 410 runs at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 134. The South African was honoured to be selected and believes that the Delhi could "turn around the fortunes".

For that, he would need strong backing from the seniors in the squad, that too Yuvraj who is a lot more accomplished than him. Dua said that Duminy’s leadership is likely to give Yuvraj the license to go out and focus on as well as enjoy his own game rather than pressurizing him to take decisions.

Jun 20: Bengaluru FC (BFC) have signed Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva for a one-year deal, the ISL club said in a statement on Saturday.

As per the agreement, BFC have the option of extending Silva's contract for another year.

The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent the better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League.

His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn't materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move.

"I've signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city," said Silva.

Silva, thus, became BFC's first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals with Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva's addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring.

"Cleiton has a proven track record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we're looking forward to working with him," he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not end its partnership with Chinese companies. Vivo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is the main sponsor of the new IPL season as well. Apart from Vivo, PayTM and Dream 11 will also be at the helm of the 13th edition of the IPL. The IPL governing council meeting on Sunday decided to retain the old sponsors.

As soon as the IPL GC announced the decision of retaining the sponsors, a huge number of fans took to Twitter to slam the board for the same. #BoycottIPL started trending as the users urged others to boycott the tournament for the Chinese connection.

Earlier, the demand for exclusion of Chinese companies from the IPL was strong in the wake of the India-China border dispute. But the BCCI cannot abruptly end its collaboration with them. Because of the signed contract itself. And in this age of declining economy, it is difficult to find new sponsors quickly.

The current BCCI contract with Vivo is for five years. Vivo has invested Rs 2,199 crore to become the main sponsor of the IPL. The contract was signed in 2017. However, the BCCI’s move is paving the way for new discussions as calls are mounting across the country to boycott Chinese companies.

The BCCI announced other important decisions besides retaining sponsors. The IPL will be held from September 19 to November 10. The Indian government has given permission to the BCCI to hold the IPL in the UAE. With this, all obstacles in the way of organizing the tournament were removed.

The IPL matches will be played at 7.30 pm Indian time (6 pm UAE time). Most matches are about one match a day. There are a total of ten ‘double headers’ (two matches a day) in the tournament. Franchisees are allowed to appoint as many replacements as they want in the new season in view of the new health situation. At the same time, the maximum number of players a franchise can accommodate is 24. The BCCI is also planning to host a women’s IPL tournament.

New Delhi, Jun 13: West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has said that wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and is one of the easiest guys to interact with.

Bravo was doing an Instagram live chat with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa and it was then that the all-rounder was asked to talk about his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I think a lot of credit for CSK's success has to be given to Dhoni and Fleming, obviously the owners, they trust both Fleming and Dhoni, so there is no outside interference when it comes to decision making, both are very big students of the game, players love MS and it's an environment and franchise that allows you to be you," Bravo told Mbangwa during the chat.

"MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and in our team. He was one of the easiest people to interact with, outside of the cricket field, he is like playing video games, his door is open at all times, whenever you talk about the biggest superstar and then you think a person like Dhoni is the most humble of them all. CSK is a special team and we have the most loyal fans," he added.

Bravo has been with the CSK since 2011. He has played a total of 104 matches for the franchise, picking up 121 wickets.

The all-rounder has also managed to win the Purple Cap (most wickets in IPL) two times (2013 and 2015).

CSK has won the IPL thrice (2010, 2011 and 2018) and all the titles have come under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the high-profile game.

This year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

The board had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy).

Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He would have been leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
