Indians take on Pakistan in must-win clash

Colombo, September 30: Having crashed out of the tournament without a single win in the Super Eight stages of the last two editions in England and the West Indies, MS Dhoni and company began in a similar fashion, losing their Group 2 opening match to Australia here at the R Premadasa stadium on Friday. The defeat was as demoralising as it was morale-boosting against England only a few days ago in the first phase of the tournament.

It will require a great amount of pep talking by the team’s think-tank and no less resolve by the players themselves to bounce back from such a crushing loss as they run into highflying Pakistan, who notched up a thrilling two-wicket win over a bungling South Africa earlier on Friday.

Not since the 2007 final at Johannesburg, where India prevailed in a last-over thriller, the two Asian neighbours have met each other again in a World T20 match and as such their Sunday’s clash promises plenty of drama and excitement.

The contest is also a must-win for Dhoni’s men if they have to fancy their chances of progressing further in the tournament but they know Pakistan will be extremely difficult to overcome, regardless of India’s stranglehold over their arch-rivals in World events -- whether it’s the 50-over World Cup or World T20. If the immediate past is any indicator, then Pakistan hold a theoretical edge over India. Not only did Mohammad Hafeez’s inspired bunch hand India a defeat by chasing a 180-plus total in a warm-up match here, they also completed a sensational comeback win over South Africa that should hold them in good stead.

On the other hand, Australia hit India’s five-bowler policy for a six in a brutally clinical performance with both the ball and the bat. Though well-conceived, the nine-wicket demolition has forced the team management to rethink their strategy against Pakistan.

Will they bite the bullet and take the risk of leaving out Virender Sehwag again or sacrifice a bowler? Either decision is like a double-edged sword but given the opponents, Dhoni will be better off having Sehwag at the top of the order.

Yes, Dhoni hasn’t yet given a fair run to 6-5 formula to conclude it as a failure but one has to take into account that many of India-Pakistan battles are won in the mind. To have that psychological edge going into such a crucial match, India need Sehwag, the one player capable of inducing the fear of God in bowlers’ minds. The other option is to keep Yuvraj Singh out of the mix but that appears a thin possibility at the moment. India will also have realised that even if they pack their side with seven batsmen, it’s of little use if they suffer an inexplicable slide like the one against Australia.

It’s funny how in a matter of one defeat things turn on their heads.

Following their win over England, Dhoni had claimed he was happy to have a problem of plenty but after their loss to Australia, the Indian skipper is now facing plenty of problems. It’s an ideal opportunity, one might think, for Pakistan to break the India jinx at world events.

Their spinners’ success against South Africa might be tempting for Pakistan to go again with three specialists in Saeed Ajmal, Raza Hasan and Shahid Afridi besides skipper Hafeez himself but it will also be playing on the back of their mind that Indians are a much better players of spin than the Proteas. Pakistan’s wobbly batting display on Friday was an encouraging sign for India; just as their bowling performance against Australia was to Pakistan.

Sunday, though, will put to test not just the skills of the two sides but their fortitude as well.

New Delhi, Apr 30: India and Delhi Capitals batsman Ajinkya Rahane won't mind playing the IPL in empty stadiums if it ensures the safety of the fans.

Speaking in an Instagram Live session arranged by Delhi Capitals, Rahane said: "COVID-19 pandemic has taught everyone that unexpected things can happen, therefore we need to be happy about what we are doing, and should value what we have.

"As for IPL or any other sport, I feel it could be played without spectators. All of us have played domestic cricket in almost empty stadiums, so that’s an experience all cricketers are used to."

"Of course we are nothing without our fans, and that’s why their safety is of utmost importance. Even if they get to watch some Live action from home, I am sure that will be an enjoyable experience as well. The safety of fans is key, and if we need to play in empty stadiums for that, we are open to do it,” Rahane said. IPL 2020 has been indefinitely postponed due the COVID-19 pandemic but there is a possibility that it is played behind closed doors in September.

Speaking on how he has been spending time during the nationwide lockdown, India's Test specialist said he is enjoying bonding with his wife and daughter.

"I'm trying to be as positive as possible during this lockdown, and staying at home with my wife and daughter. It's given me an opportunity to bond with them, and I am also able to help my wife in cooking and cleaning.

"I'm also trying to revive my karate skills, something that I pursued as a child. It definitely helps me in maintaining my agility and fitness, and I am enjoying it a lot," said the 31-year-old.

The experienced middle-order batsman was bought by Delhi Capitals last year before the IPL Auction, and says he is really excited about playing for the franchise.

"It is something I've really been eager about, and it has stemmed in because of the things I've heard about the team from the likes of Ishant, Shikhar, and Shreyas. They’ve told me that it's like a huge family where everyone is always backing each other, and enjoying each other's successes," he said.

Talking about his excitement on playing under head coach Ricky Ponting, Rahane said he has always admired the Australian legend.

"My idols growing up were definitely Rahul Sir and Sachin Sir, but I've always admired Ricky Sir also. I used to try to copy his batting and fielding styles. And therefore, I'm really looking forward to working under him. I'm sure he will help me immensely in my batting as well as overall leadership,” said the former captain of Rajasthan Royals.

Mumbai, Mar 3: India on Tuesday retained their number one spot and captain Virat Kohli remained static at second in the ICC rankings despite a dismal Test series against New Zealand.

India have 116 rating points, six more than New Zealand with third-placed Australia accumulating 108 points. The 0-2 result against New Zealand was India's first series loss in the World Test Championship.

Kohli remains in second position in the batting rankings despite a forgettable Test series in which he made 38 runs in four innings, the ICC said in a statement.

New Zealand opener Tom Blundell and his Indian counterpart Prithvi Shaw and debutant paceman Kyle Jamieson were among the biggest movers in the rankings, released on Tuesday.

Blundell had a successful series against India, scoring 117 runs in four innings, with one half-century, which put him among the top two run-scorers in the series.

The performance meant he was rewarded with a jump of 27 places to No. 46. Shaw, who returned for his first series since his Test debut against West Indies in 2018, and made a punchy 54 in the first innings of the Christchurch Test, rose 17 places to No.76.

Australia's Steve Smith retained his top spot, holding a 25-point advantage over Kohli. Smith's apprentice Marnus Labuschagne jumped one spot to round off the top three, taking the place of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes and India opener Mayank Agarwal moved a spot each and swapped places to break into and fall out of the top 10 respectively.

Among bowlers, Tim Southee's Player of the Series winning performance against India took him into the top five, with a jump of two places to No.4, while Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult returned to the top 10, gaining four places each to occupy the seventh and ninth positions respectively.

But the biggest gainer was Jamieson, who rose from No. 80 to 43.

There was only one change in the top ten among all-rounders, with Southee dropping a spot to No.10 and team-mate Neil Wagner falling out of the top 10 with a drop of four spots.

As with the bowling rankings, Jamieson, who frustrated India with handy lower order runs, gained big on the all-rounders' table, rising 26 places to No. 22.

Bengaluru, May 27: Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has revealed that he was never able to dismiss Inzamam-ul-Haq in the nets.

The Rawalpindi Express praised the former Pakistan skipper and said Inzamam could see the ball one second earlier than the rest of the batsmen could.

"Honestly, I don't think I could ever get him (Inzamam) out, he had the time and I always felt he saw the ball a second earlier than the rest of the batsmen because I had a complicated action unlike Brett Lee, I felt I could never dismiss Inzamam-ul-Haq," Akhtar told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"I couldn't get him out in the nets, I think he could see the ball a second before anyone else," he added.

Inzamam played 120 Tests and 378 ODIs for Pakistan.

He finished his career with 20,569 runs across all formats.

The right-handed batsman called time on his career in 2007 and he played his last Test against South Africa in Lahore.

On the other hand, Akhtar played 224 matches for Pakistan in international cricket and took 444 wickets across all formats.

The Rawalpindi Express last played an ODI in 2011 as he played against New Zealand in the 50-over World Cup.
