IPL 7: Chance for boys to become men

April 14, 2014

CHENNAI, Apr 14: As the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off with the opener between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on April 16, the arc lights will not only be on the big names, but also on the young guns.ipl

The likes of Baba Aparajith (Chennai Super Kings) and Vijay Zol (Royal Challengers Bangalore) will want to replicate their performances that have seen them catch the attention of the franchises. There are other youngsters who are itching to put their best foot forward.

For starters, Sunrisers Hyderabad's Ricky Bhui, the youngest member in the tournament at 17 years and 195 days, underwent a training schedule in Hyderabad before leaving for the UAE on Saturday. "I faced the likes of Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma in the nets. Our mentor VVS Laxman gave me tips on how to handle pressure while facing some of the biggest names in the tournament," Bhui told TOI hours before he left.

Bhui's U-19 India teammate CV Milind, also part of the Sunrisers squad, felt that IPL 7 will be his biggest test yet. "Adaptability to the conditions and rising to the occasion will determine a player's success in this competition," he said.

Handling pressure, according to chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav, will be the key. "That's where experienced heads come into play. I want to learn how players of the calibre of Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis withstand such high levels of pressure each time they take the field. Once you master it, things will fall in place. Also, being a fan of Sunil Narine, I am keen on learning how he plans a batsman's dismissal," said Yadav, who will be representing the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Not only is the young brigade looking to learn from the best in business, they also share notes among themselves. "I had a word with Sanju (Samson) the other day since he did exceptionally well for the Rajasthan Royals last year. His only message was to focus on the ball, and not on the bowler. It made sense since we often tend to get subdued by a bowler's reputation," noted Bhui.

Zol, who led India at the U-19 World Cup in UAE this February, is confident of mastering the conditions. "Having played there not long ago, I know what's coming my way. IPL is a tournament that will put our skills to test. This is one tournament where you get to rub shoulders with the world's best, and it's important to utilise this opportunity," Zol said.

The youth brigade may be friends off the field, but trust them to go hard at each other when they are on the field representing their respective franchises.

"Not an inch will be given or asked," stressed Bhui.

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Indian men's hockey team defender Harmanpreet Singh is delighted and honoured to be nominated for the Arjuna Award by Hockey India.

The Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award while her compatriots Vandana Katariya, Monika and Harmanpreet Singh have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

"I was extremely delighted to hear the news. It's an honour to be nominated for the Arjuna Award and I am sure the nomination will motivate me to perform even better in the upcoming years. All of us have received tremendous support from Hockey India over the years and I was extremely happy to know that Rani has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Vandana Katariya and Monika have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. They have put up some brilliant performances in the recent past and I would like to extend my congratulations to them," Harmanpreet said.

The 24-year-old dragflick sensation stepped up his role in the team and shouldered the responsibility of vice-captain with aplomb. As a defender-dragflicker, he was instrumental in the team's winning performance in the FIH Series Finals in Odisha. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Test Event, he captained the team to victory in the absence of Manpreet Singh who was rested for the tournament.

Harmanpreet was also part of the Indian team that won the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers against Russia last year. Harmanpreet said that he has been able to perform for the team only because of the support he has received from his teammates.

"I am very happy with the way I have been contributing to the team in the last couple of years. However, I have been able to come up with the goods only because of the way my teammates have supported me. Hockey is a team sport and all of us ensure that we are contributing to the team's cause in some way or the other. If we score a goal, then it's not only the goal scorer, who takes the credit, but the entire team is credited for a particular effort," said the defender.

Harmanpreet added that booking a place in the Tokyo Olympic Games was the biggest achievement for the team in 2019.

"It was simply amazing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in front of our home crowd last year. I will cherish the memory forever. The balance of our side was fantastic and everyone chipped in to make the tournament a memorable one. Now, we will give everything we can to come up with great results at the Olympics next year. It's our sole target at the moment and all of us are up for the challenge. Hopefully, we will become a much better side once we play our first match in Tokyo," he said.

New Delhi, Jul 14: Indian bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who features in the list of A category players released by BCCI, has revealed his first-ever paycheck.

Bhuvneshwar was participating in a question and answer session on Twitter where he gave his take on fans' queries.

The 30-year-old bowler was asked about his first paycheck by a fan and Bhuvneshwar responded by saying, "It was for Rs 3000. I shopped and still managed to saved some."

During the question and answer session Bhuvneshwar picked Barcelona striker Lionel Messi over Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The right-arm bowler also revealed that football and badminton are his favourite sports other than cricket.

Earlier this year, Bhuvneshwar was named in the list A category of players. BCCI had released the list of centrally contracted players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020. Annually, A category players get Rs 5 crore.

The right-arm bowler would have been in action for Sunrisers Hyderabad if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29. However, the tournament was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
