It’s mandatory to offer namaz at the mosque: Babri petitioner

New Delhi, Sept 27: After the Supreme Court decided against referring the 1994 Ismail Faruqui case to a larger constitutional bench, Haji Mehboob, one of the petitioners in the Babri Masjid case, on Thursday described the move of the top court as questionable.

Speaking to ANI, Mehboob said, "I cannot have any say to the judgement passed by the Supreme Court. However, I feel it is mandatory to offer prayers (namaz) at the mosque. I can also question, why do Hindus go to temples to offer their prayers? To me, namaz is synonymous with mosques."

Meanwhile, another petitioner to the Babri Masjid case Iqbal Ansari welcomed the apex court's judgment, saying it would not "affect the Muslims at large" and the sanctity of namaz would remain the same if one chooses to offer it from home instead of visiting a mosque.

"We welcome the Supreme Court's decision. A namaz will be a namaz whether it is in masjid or somewhere else. This will certainly not affect the Muslims in a big way. After all, the fight is over the Babri Masjid and Ram Mandir and not namaz. This won't affect the matter pertaining to Ayodhya as well," Ansari told ANI.

Announcing its verdict on the issue of reference of Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid case to a larger bench, the Supreme Court held that all religions and religious places need to be equally respected. "Ashoka's edicts preach tolerance to faith of others," said Justice Ashok Bhushan as he read out the verdict.

The court pronounced the decision on the limited aspect of whether the law laid down by the Supreme Court in its 1994 judgement in Ismail Faruqui case should be revisited by a Constitution Bench. The top court said that it will begin hearing the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid matter from October 29 to decide the suit on merit.

New Delhi, Feb 4: Senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday accused Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party of not implementing the central government's schemes in the national capital.

Addressing an election rally in Moti Bagh, he also sought to allay fears over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), assuring the gathering that the legislation will not take away anyone's citizenship.

Singh alleged that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government did not do anything in the last five years.

The AAP had promised to add 5,000 buses to the fleet of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), but instead the number has come down by 1,000, he claimed.

The Union minister said the AAP dispensation did not implement central schemes in Delhi fearing that the popularity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will grow among Delhiites.

Pension schemes and the Centre's flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, are some of those that the Kejriwal government did not allow to be implemented in Delhi.

On the anti-CAA protests, Singh said that the opposition parties have been spreading "lies" about amended citizenship law and the National Population Register (NPR).

"The CAA will not take away anyone's citizenship. The opposition parties are spreading lies about the CAA. There should be no such politics over this. Some people are trying to write the history of the country with the ink of hatred," he said.

The culture of India is such that it considers the entire world one family, he said.

Delhi goes to polls on February 8. The results will be declared on February 11.

New Delhi, Mar 21: Novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 258 on Saturday after 35 fresh cases were reported in various parts of the country, according to the Health Ministry.

Among the 258 are 39 foreign nationals, including 17 from Italy, three from the Philippines, two from the UK, one each belonging to Canada, Indonesia and Singapore.

The total figure also includes four deaths reported from Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra.

"The total number of active COVID-19 cases across India stands at 231 so far," the ministry said, adding that 23 others have been cured/discharged/migrated while four have died.

Delhi has, so far, reported 26 positive cases, which include one foreigner, while Uttar Pradesh has recorded 24 cases, including one foreigner.

Maharashtra has 52 cases, including three foreigners, while Kerala has recorded 40 cases, which include seven foreign nationals.

Karnataka has 15 coronavirus patients. The number of cases in Ladakh rose to 13 and Jammu & Kashmir four. Telangana has reported 19 cases, which include 11 foreigners.

Rajasthan has also reported 17 cases, including two foreigners. Gujarat has reported seven cases so far.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand have reported three cases each.

West Bengal, Odisha and Punjab each reported two cases while Puducherry, Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh reported one case each.

In Haryana, there are 17 cases, which include 14 foreigners.
