James Bond actor Roger Moore dies aged 89

London, May 23: Popular British actor Roger Moore, best known for playing fictional spy James Bond in seven films, passed away today in Switzerland after a brief battle with cancer. He was 89.jamebond

Moore's family confirmed the news by posting a statement on the actor's official Twitter page.

"With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated.

"The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone," read the statement signed by Moore's children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian.

The family said that they will hold a private funeral in Monaco, where the actor lived.

With seven Bond films, Moore played the role more often than any of the other Bonds such as Sean Connery and Daniel Craig. He acted in films such as Live and Let Die" and "The Spy Who Loved Me".

In their statement, the family said Moore considered his work for UNICEF as his "greatest achievement".

"The affection our father felt whenever he walked onto a stage or in front of a camera buoyed him hugely and kept him busy working into his 90th year... in accordance with our father's wishes there will be a private funeral in Monaco."

Born in Stockwell, south London, Moore studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). He became a contender for the role of 007 after Scottish actor Connery announced in 1966 that he would no longer be appearing as Bond.

Besides his outings as Bond, Moore had an extensive and productive career as an actor in cinema and television.

His other prominent performance were in films such as "Bullseye!", "Bed & Breakfast", "Curse of the Pink Panther" and "The Quest".

On small screen, Moore was popular for doing "Ivanhoe", "The Saint" and "The Persuaders".

Moore penned two books about his time as Bond as well as two autobiographies, including "My Word is My Bond: The Autobiography", which was peppered with anecdotes about his encounters with other stars and his memories of his time in Hollywood.

An active philanthropist, he became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador in 1991.

Celebrities across the globe expressed their grief over Moore's demise.

"Roger Moore , loved him," Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe tweeted.

Kris Jenner posted, "The ultimate James Bond... so sad to hear that Roger Moore has passed away. Thoughts and prayers are with his family..."

Actress Mia Farrow wrote, "Few are as kind and giving as was Roger Moore. Loving thoughts with his family and friends. He will be missed too by UNICEF."

Bollywood actors Rishi Kapoor and Boman Irani also mourned Moore's demise.

"RIP. Name is James... Roger Moore... Bond," Kapoor wrote alongside Moore's picture.

Irani shared, "A sad day became sadder. #JamesBond cannot bleed let alone die. You will remain in our hearts forever. Sir #RogerMoore."

Mumbai, May 17: TV actor Manmeet Grewal, who worked on shows like "Aadat Se Majboor" and "Kuldeepak", committed suicide after struggling with dwindling finances amid lockdown, family friend-producer Manjit Singh Rajput said.

Grewal, who was originally from Punjab, hanged himself on Friday night at his Kharghar residence here where he lived with his wife. He was 32.

Rajput, who had known Grewal for nearly seven years, said the actor was facing "financial crisis" and wasn't able to earn due to the lockdown. 

"He was going through a major financial issue and he was also in depression. The added pressure of not being able to repay loans amid this (no work phase) got to him. His wife is completely shocked and devastated," Rajput told PTI.

The producer said last rites of the actor were performed on Saturday. 

Grewal was working on projects like a webseries and some commercials, which were put on hold due to the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi, Feb 9: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani got emotional while watching the movie "Shikara: The Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits". It is a Hindi-language period film produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir.

In a video clip, the political veteran is seen trying to hold back his tears at the end of the film while Mr Chopra rushes to console him. Other people around them were also seen getting emotional and congratulating the filmmaker for the movie.

"Shikara" is about how Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee from their houses in the Kashmir Valley in early 1990, in the wake of insurgency. The filmmaker said the film showcases how Kashmiri Pandits rebuilt their lives in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Featuring Aadil Khan and Sadia, Shikara released on February 7. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who is from Kashmir, dedicates his movie to his mother, who died in 2007.

Mumbai, Jul 18: Actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya Bachchan on Friday were shifted to a city hospital, almost a week after they were tested positive for COVID-19. Aishwarya, 46 and eight-year-old Aaradhya were diagnosed with coronavirus on Sunday, a day after the actor’s father-in-law, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and husband Abhishek Bachchan tested positive for the COVID-19.

The mother-daughter duo was self-quarantining at home till now.

“Both Aishwarya and Aaradhya were admitted to Nanavati hospital today. They are fine,” hospital source said.

Aishwarya needed medical attention, another insider said.

Amitabh, 77, and Abhishek, 44, both are already in the isolation ward of Nanavati hospital.

Since his diagnosis, Amitabh has been regularly updating his admires about his health on social media.

“In happy times, in times of illness, you our near and dear, our well wishers, our fans have ever given us unstinting love , affection care and prayer .. we express our bountiful gracious gratitude to you all .. in these circumstances hospital protocol, restrictive,” the screen icon tweeted on Friday evening.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), coronavirus cases in Mumbai rose to 98,979 with 1,228 new patients being reported on Friday.

Death toll due to the pandemic rose to 5,582 with 62 new fatalities being recorded.
