Udupi, Apr 13: In a move that could directly harm the Congress party and indirectly benefit the BJP in Udupi, the Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to field its candidates in four of the five assembly constituencies in the coastal district and back Bahujan Samaj Party candidate in the remaining one constituency.

Yogesh Shetty, president of district unit of JD(S) told media persons that his party would field Gangadhar Birti from Udupi Assembly Constituency; Ravi Shetty from Byndoor, and Prakash Shetty Thekkatte from Kundapur.

The candidate for Kaup will be decided in a couple of days. The BSP will support the JD(S) candidates in all these four constituencies in the district, he said.

Uday Kumar Tallur, president of the district unit of the BSP said that the party will field its candidate from Karkala Assembly Constituency.

The name of the candidate for Karkala and 19 other Assembly seats will be finalised after April 14. The JD(S) will support the BSP in Karkala.

To a query, Yogesh Shetty said that there was pressure on him from people to contest from Kaup. But there were aspirants for the Kaup seat. Hence, the top brass of the party would take a call on it.

Political observers believe that though JD(S) and BSP cannot win any constituency in Udupi district, they are capable of snatching a considerable number of Dalit and Muslim votes from the Congress.
