Jeddah’s bridges, tunnels ease traffic congestion

Jeddah, Jan 21: Jeddah will have a smoother traffic flow thanks to the bridges and tunnels projects the mayoralty is implementing with coordination with Jeddah traffic administration, said Zaid Al-Hamzi, spokesman for the Jeddah traffic police.

Al-Hamzi said the new projects will facilitate traffic movement and ease congestions by 70 percent.

These remarks came after the inauguration of the King Fahd (Sitteen) Road bridge across Heraa Street (White Horse Square) and Prince Sultan Bin Salman Street. The 2.5-km long and 56 meter wide bridge has a capacity of carrying 2,000 cars at the same time. With three lanes on each way of traffic, it gives the area a 100 percent flexibility and release traffic for Heraa and Prince Sultan Bin Salman streets.

Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras on Sunday opened traffic on the bridge that is considered the longest in Jeddah.

Abu Ras said the mayoralty is keen on easing the traffic jams in Jeddah by implementing a series of connecting tunnels and bridges to release the traffic in the main roads and intersections, “The Jeddah mayoralty has carried out 22 projects for easing traffic congestions in the past five years, including constructing 18 bridges and 10 tunnels,” he added saying that these projects have decreased the commuting time in Jeddah.

The project is the sixth project to be implemented on the Sitteen Street (north-south) as Jeddah celebrated opening the industrial institute intersection bridge, Quraish street intersection bridge, Al-Tahlia intersection, King Abdullah road tunnel, and Gharnata street bridge.

Abu Ras said that citizens and visitors of Jeddah will celebrate the opening of a bridge at the intersection between Madinah Road and Haleema Al-Saadia Street in the upcoming month. He pointed out the King Fahd intersection bridge with Al-Rawda Street (the Bicycle Square). The bridge is a 583-meter-long,13.5-meter-wide and has three lanes for each traffic side.

The mayor added the final designs are being put to King Fahd Road tunnel at the intersection with Al-Falak and Sari streets, adding that the project will be rendered soon. The project is part of releasing traffic congestion project at the King Fahd Road (Sitteen), especially that this important road links between King Abdulaziz International Airport and Jeddah Islamic Port.

Abu Ras said work is under way for seven bridges and tunnels projects, including King Abdulaziz intersection tunnel with Palestine and Al-Hamra streets, King Fahd Road (The bicycle) intersection with Al-Rawda, Prince Majed intersection with Bani Malik road-bridge, Madinah Road and Haleema Al-Saadia intersection bridge, Prince Majed intersection tunnel and bridge with old Makkah Road, Al-Mahjar intersection bridge with Zenel and Television streets, Al-Mahjar intersection bridge with King Faisal Road (The southern Corniche).

Abu Dhabi, Apr 26: Indian Ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor says he is appalled after the bodies of three Indians flown back to India were returned to Abu Dhabi on Friday.

The three deceased Indian nationals had died of non-coronavirus causes and were flown to Delhi on Thursday but were promptly returned by authorities there.

“We are appalled at what has happened,” Kapoor told Gulf News. “We do not know if the bodies were returned because of coronavirus-related restrictions, but we are obviously not sending the remains of people [who have passed away from COVID-19],” he added.

“[As we understand], it happened because of new protocols at the airport and we are trying to sort it out,” he said.

Sent back a few hours later

“The remains were not offloaded from the plane, and were sent back a few hours later,” Kapoor explained.

The deceased were Kamlesh Bhatt, who passed away on April 17, and Sanjeev Kumar and Jagsir Singh who both died on April 13.

According to reports in Indian media, Kamlesh Bhat was 23 years old, and hailed from Tehri Garhwal district. He allegedly died of cardiac arrest. Along with the remains Kumar and Singh, Bhatt’s body was initially repatriated on an Etihad Airways flight, then sent back, even though his relatives had been on their way to collect them.

Kapoor explained the procedure through which remains are normally returned to family members back home, saying that the worker’s employer typically makes arrangements with cargo companies to repatriate bodies on cargo aircraft.

The employer applies for a No Objection Certificate from the Indian Embassy, which is granted once the Embassy ensures that all local formalities have been completed. The cargo company then applies for airport clearance, and the airline obtains approvals from the receiving airport.

“If airport protocols have changed, it means cargo companies have to be more careful about the clearance they’re getting,” Kapoor advised.

Additional costs
The ambassador added there may eventually be additional costs to repatriate the bodies but that it is first necessary to sort out the concerns.

The global coronavirus outbreak has spawned difficulties in repatriating mortal remains as a result of the travel restrictions imposed by countries. Remains of people dying from COVID-19 are not being sent back, but the caution surrounding the handling of bodies often affects the repatriation of those who succumb to other causes.

As Gulf News reported, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan reached out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday for intervention in bringing back the bodies of Keralites who have died in the Gulf from non-COVID-19 causes.

“I would like to draw your attention to the grievances received from Non-resident Keralites Associations (NRKs) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries on the delay caused in bringing home the mortal remains of NRKs who had expired due to reasons other than the COVID-19 infection,” read the letter by the CM.

“It is learnt that a ‘clearance certificate’ from the Indian Embassies is required to process the application of bringing home the mortal remains of the dead. The Embassies are [further] insisting on the production of a no-objection certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), New Delhi. To enable to bring back the bodies of the NRIs whose deaths occurred due to reasons other than COVID-19 infection, without necessary procedural hassles, I request your kind intervention,” Vijayan has requested.

Dubai, May 31: As many as 84 beggars have been arrested in Dubai during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, the Dubai Police have said.

The arrests were carried out as part of their anti-begging campaign to prevent begging during the holy month of Ramadan.

Some illegal vendors, too, have been arrested in different areas of the emirate, the police added.

Colonel Ali Salem, Director of the Infiltrators Department at the Criminal Investigations Department of Dubai Police, said that the campaign aims to maintain the safety and security of the society, adding that the campaign was successful and helped reduce the number of beggars across the emirate.

He called on the public to report begging activities to the number 901 or the Dubai Police app.

Abu Dhabi, Jul 23: Muslims in the United Arab Emirates have been asked to perform Eid Al-Adha prayers at home even as mosques will be allowed to operate at an increased capacity of 50 percent from Aug. 3.

Mosques in the UAE have been operating at 30 percent capacity after they reopened on July 1.

Announcing the move, Dr. Saif Al Dhaheri, the official spokesman for the National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority, stated that after assessing the situation and coordinating with the concerned authorities, it was decided that Eid Al-Adha prayers would be conducted in homes and takbeers broadcast through visual and audio means.

He also announced that the Emirates Fatwa Council has recommended that donations and sacrifices should be to official charitable causes in the country only.

Al Dhaheri advised the public to donate during this time to the official charitable bodies in the country with sacrifices and donations, through smart applications concerned with sacrifices or through slaughterhouses outlined by the local authorities that guarantee the application of precautionary and preventive measures and provide remote services without the need to enter livestock markets or slaughterhouses.

Al Dhaheri stressed the need to avoid family visits and gatherings, and replace them using electronic means of communication or phone contact, as well as refraining from distributing Eid gifts and money to children and individuals during this occasion recommending to instead use of electronic alternatives.

Al Dhaheri pointed out that it is necessary to avoid visiting pregnant women, children and those with chronic diseases who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 and not to allow them to leave the home and avoid going out to public places to preserve their health and safety.
