Mangaluru, Aug 20: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of St Agnes College (Autonomous) organised ‘Journalism Conclave’ on August 20, Tuesday.

The conclave aimed to impart awareness on the various career options available in the media industry as well as motivate women students to become journalists who uphold quality and ethics.

“Even though women enrolling in journalism or mass communication courses are higher than their male counterparts, their representation in newsrooms is still less,” said St Agnes College principal Sr Dr Jeswina A.C presiding over the programme.

“At St Agnes, we felt media should have an equal representation of men and women and is one of the main reasons we added Journalism and Mass Communication as a core subject in our Arts Stream in the year 2017. St Agnes is a college for women and has a history of empowering women for nearly 100 years. Many of our alumnae hold respectable posts in the media industry. However, in the wake of the changing media scenarios and constant complaints regarding deteriorating ethics in Journalism, we aim not just to produce journalism graduates but ethical young professionals, who can intelligently navigate their way, standing up for truth and not compromising in quality journalism,” she said.

The conclave had two sessions, ‘Women in Journalism’ and ‘Importance of digital marketing’. The first session was a discussion with prominent women in media industry.

Alter Marketing founders Disha Prabhu and Arjun D’Souza took up the second session highlighting the importance of digital marketing in the current era.

"It is more than just a communication option. In the next two years, digital marketing will constitute a major part of any company's strategy. Every company will be looking for a digital marketing specialist to perform the most important and highest paying tasks in the company and thus you can be the one who everyone is looking for,” Arjun said.

Disha Gloria Prabhu who is a senior copy writer working in an advertisement field took the session on writing as profession and writing for social media and advertising. She also discussed about traditional advertising. She shared her own experiences and inspired the young students.

Mrs. Deekshitha Prashanth, Assistant Professor of Department of Journalism convened and compered the programme. The conclave was open to all. Students from different colleges in Mangaluru participated in the conclave.
