Karnataka: Congress declares candidate for Yeshvanthapura assembly by-poll

New Delhi, Nov 18: The Congress party on Sunday announced the name of its candidate for the by-election to Yeshvanthapura Assembly constituency in Karnataka.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the name of P Nagaraj to contest election from Yshvanthapura seat, an official communication said.

On Saturday, the party released a list of six candidates for the by-polls which are scheduled to be held on December 5.

The party has fielded Gananan Balachandra Mangasuli from Athani, Bharamgouda Alagouda Kage from Kagwad, and Lakhan Jarkiholi from Gokak Assembly constituencies.

Venkatrao Ghorpade will be contesting from Vijayanagara, Rizwan Arshad from Shivajinagar and KB Chandrashekar from Krishnarajpet Assembly seat.

A total of 15 seats are going to elections which necessitated due to the disqualification of 17 Congress-JDS MLAs.

Karnataka reports 5,532 new COVID-19 cases

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

15-year-old boy electrocuted to death in Udupi

Udupi, July 18 A 15-year-old boy lost his life due to electrocution after he came in contact with a live wire last evening near his house at Laxminagar under the limits of Malpe police station in Udupi.

The deceased has been identified as Gautham (15), son of Manjunath Naiak, a resident of Laxminagar.

Police sources said, the electrocution occurred while he was lifting a pump set from the well at his neighbour’s house. He died on the spot.

A case has been registered at Malpe Police Station and investigation is on.

Gautham had recently appeared for SSLC examinations.

Abandoned bag at Mangaluru Airport triggers panic

Mangaluru, Jan 20: A suspicious unattended laptop bag with the suspicion of containing “something harmful” was found abandoned at the Mangaluru International Airport on Monday.

The bag was found kept in the rest area meant for the passengers outside the airport. According to reports, two men came in auto and left the bag near the ticket counter, which is near the VIP vehicles parking area.

The bag, which was lying unattended near the entrance of the airport was removed from the spot by the airport security personnel at 8.45 am.

Bomb detection squad personnel has rushed to the spot and shifted the bag to a safe zone, said Mangaluru Commissioner of Police P S Harsha.
