Karnataka polls: Former JD(S) rebel leaders responsible for delay in release of Congress list?

Bengaluru, Apr 14: The internal turmoil over fielding candidates in some of constituencies, particularly those represented by rebel JD(S) candidates who joined the party recently, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to contest from two constituencies, is said to be responsible the delay in the release of first list of candidates by the Congress party.

Though the Congress was expected to release its first list on Friday, sources in the party said it would be out on Saturday after another round of talks with AICC president Rahul Gandhi.

Senior leaders have also been opposing giving ticket to the seven JD(S) rebel leaders who joined the Congress, citing that they had joined the party just a few days ago and ticket should be given to those who have served the party for several years.

Earlier on Friday, Mr. Siddaramaiah and KPCC president G. Parameshwara and other States leaders called on the former Congress president Sonia Gnadhi and sought her support. 

Ms. Gandhi told the leaders to work hard to ensure the party’s victory with a majority. Mr. Siddaramaiah, Dr. Parameshwara, KPCC campaign committee chairman D.K. Shivakumar, AICC secretary in charge of Karnataka K.C. Venugopal held a brainstorming session with central election committee members and discussed the names to be nominated for the 224 constituencies.

Will CM get two tickets?

It is said that differences among the top leaders came to the fore over Mr. Siddaramaiah’s decision to contest from two constituencies — Chamundeshwari in Mysuru district and Badami in Bagalkot district. Senior party leaders such as M. Mallikarjun Kharge, M. Veerappa Moily and K. Rahman Khan have reportedly opposed the Chief Minister’s decision. Senior leaders argued that contesting from two constituencies by the Chief Minister would send out a wrong message to the electorate.

However, in the interest of the party, sources said Mr. Gandhi has given the green signal to Mr. Siddaramaiah to contest from two constituencies, which would enable him to campaign in both the southern and northern parts of the State.

Following a meeting with Mr. Gandhi, the Chief Minister’s office set out a WhatsApp message saying that Mr. Siddaramaiah would file his nomination papers from the Chamundeshwari constituency on April 20 and from Badami on April 23.

Madikeri, Mar 29: In an alarming situation in neighbouring Kerala State and instances of inter-state migration of Coronavirus suspects, the authorities on Sunday sealed both Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu borders, prohibiting entry of people from Kerala into Karnataka.

Dakshina Kannada had sealed its borders after repeated instances of people misusing ambulance services to travel to Mangalore. Villagers along with the police hauled mud on to the roads that were used as alternate routes.

The road that connects the two States, which people from east Kasargod used to enter into Karnataka, were closed at Mulleria by dumping mud on the road.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: With fresh guidelines on the COVID-19 lockdown expected soon, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday chaired a meeting with key ministers, officials and Deputy Commissioners of districts and discussed about re-starting economic activities in the state, as he took stock about of the pandemic.

"At the video conference with DCs, CM took stock of COVID-19 situation and measures taken to control its spread. Discussions also happened regarding starting of certain economic activities in parts of the state," official sources said. The state government would take any decision in this regard after the Centre issues fresh guidelines or directives, they said, without elaborating.

The meeting came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conferencing with Chief Ministers to discuss the situation arising due to COVID-19 in the country, which is under lockdown since March 25 to contain the pandemic. Only nine chief ministers spoke in the virtual meeting with the Prime Minister and Yediyurappa did not get an opportunity.

A senior Minister, who attended the meeting told PTI, necessary directions regarding the lockdown after May 3, they were likely to come in a couple of days.

"Most of the Chief Ministers wanted the lockdown to continue to contain the spread.... nothing concrete emerged, but we expect the necessary directions will follow in couple of days. This is what we expect after seeing what has happened as a followup to three to four such video conferences in the past," he said.

The Minister said the larger opinion was that the current measures should continue and interstate or inter-district movement should not be allowed. Regarding movement within the districts that are green zone, some decision may be taken soon, he said, adding the Prime Minister also asked states to concentrate on reforms, aimed at attracting investments in the days to come.
