Karnataka’s growth stuck in Bengaluru’s traffic: Amit Shah

Bengaluru, Apr 20: BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday mocked Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his “ignorance” and his incorrect pronunciation of Sir M Visvesvaraya’s name.

Shah’s ridicule came during his address to trade and industry representatives here.

“Rahul has been repeatedly saying that the BJP had waived off loans borrowed by industrialists while not doing so for farmers in distress. I challenge Rahul...let him prove that a single industrialist’s loan has been waived. Rahul baba doesn’t understand the difference between a non-performing asset (NPA) and a loan waiver. He’s misleading the country because of his ignorance,” Shah said. “Let him first learn to pronounce Visvesvaraya’s name.”

Shah also blasted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for “sleeping all the time” and demanded an account of what his government had done with the money the Centre had sent for Karnataka. “Siddaramaiah goes to Delhi and gives Rahul an injection. Rahul asks Prime Minister Narendra Modi what the BJP had done for Karnataka in the last four years. In reality, Siddaramaiah has to provide an account because Karnataka’s growth is stuck in Bengaluru’s traffic,” he said.

While hailing the city as a destination where India’s youth competed with their global counterparts, Shah accused Siddaramaiah for “destroying Bengaluru.”

Shah also responded to criticism that the Modi administration had not created enough jobs. “Wherever I go, I’m asked about employment. No government can give 100% employment, but the Modi government has provided an avenue for self-employment through the Mudra scheme. It has benefitted nine crore youth with guarantee-free loans,” he said.

Madikeri, Jan 5: Frequent attacks by Tigers on their cattle in South Kodagu region has left the dairy farmers a worried lot and causing concern for their life.

Several farmers have been rearing cows to supplement their income when low prices of pepper and coffee affect their earnings. At least 13 cows have fallen prey to Tigers in the months of November and December last year.

The Forest Department provides a compensation of Rs 10,000 if a cattle is killed by a tiger or in the attack. The compensation amount is meagre when it comes to the loss incurred by the farmers.

Though the Forest Department has submitted a proposal to increase the compensation amount to the government, no action has been initiated in this regard.

New Delhi, May 8: After deadly styrene gas leak in Visakhapatnam, Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda urged all public and private chemical makers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants.

Union Environment Ministry and State Pollution Control Boards have also issued separate directives to all companies to take extreme precaution while restarting their units that remained suspended due to the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, he said.

There was a gas leak from LG Polymers plant at Visakhapatnam in the early hours on Thursday, causing 10 deaths and hundreds of people getting hospitalised.

"LG Polymers does not come under direct control of our ministry. However, we have asked all public and private chemicals manufacturers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants," Gowda told PTI.

The minister said his officers are coordinating with the Andhra Pradesh government.

He further said LG Polymers, a multinational chemical company, had kept its unit ready for reopening after one and half month of lockdown. The unit started leaking at around 3.40 am on Thursday due to pressure.

"The toxic gas leak has affected both people and animals. Around 850 people have been hospitalised," Gowda said, adding that measures have been taken to control the situation at the plant site and final updates are awaited.

At present, Indian chemicals market size is about USD 163 billion, which is only three per cent of the global chemical industry of USD 5 trillion, as per the official data.
