Kasaragod, May 18: The district has registered 11 confirmed and 61 suspected dengue fever cases in the last two days.

The administration, seeking active involvement from local bodies, has launched a vigorous campaign to check the spread of the deadly fever epidemic in vulnerable eastern hilly hamlets of the district. It would take at least a week to assess the outcome of the ongoing campaign to check the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes the multiplication of which in vulnerable areas paves the way for dengue during monsoon, District Medical Officer A.P. Dineshkumar said.

The mosquitoes took no time to multiply manifold in damp areas and hence the public should be very careful to see that their surroundings were dry and clean as far as possible, Dr. Dineshkumar said. The sultry summer coupled with intermittent rain spell during late evenings resulted in easy breeding of the mosquitoes, he added.

The suspected fever cases, some among children, were found more in Balal village in eastern Vellarikundu taluk and Chengala panchayat near here, he said. The district had so far registered 208 cases of suspected dengue fever, 48 of them with confirmed symptoms, he said, adding the fever also resulted in the death a person at Malom. Of the 425 fever cases reported in various hospitals on Thursday, 24 were screened for having suspected dengue symptoms.
