Kasargod Magistrate, who thrashed cops in Sullia, commits suicide

Kasargod, Nov 9: In a shocking development, a judicial magistrate, who had allegedly assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver and policemen in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district, has committed suicide in Kasargod on Wednesday.

MagistrateV K Unnikrishnan, Judicial Magistrate First Class Kasargod, was found hanging at his residence in Vidyanagar at 10 am today, police sources said. He is survived by wife and two children.

A native of Trissur, 46-year-old Unnikrishnan was booked by Sullia police for his misbehaviour under the influence of alcohol in public on November 6.

On Monday, Dakshina Kannada police had written to Kerala high court registrar and Kasaragod court principal district judge seeking directions on the course of action to be taken against Unnikrishnan.

According to police, Unnikrishnan, arrived in Sullia by bus on November 6 after offering prayers at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and hired an auto-rickshaw. He said something in English to auto driver Aboobaker and then assaulted him.

The frightened driver then drove to the police station where Unnikrishnan assaulted constables and later the sub-inspector. On learning the accused was a magistrate, he was taken to the Traveller's Bungalow.

Cases under IPC sections 323, 341, 506, 332 and 353 for assault, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from carrying out his duty and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty were registered on the same day.

Ballari, Jan 6: Two members of a family were killed in a cylinder explosion at their home in Sanjeevarayana Kote, here on Monday morning, police said.

The deceased were identified as Parvathi and her daughter Huliyamma.

The incident took place when the two were in the kitchen. Fire tenders were rushed to the rescue.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: A youth from Dakshina Kannada district, who had returned from United Arab Emirates earlier this month has tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 caused by the novel coronavirus. With this the total of Covid-19 in the district has mounted to seven. 

The fresh Covid-19 patient is a 21-year-old youth hailing from Karaya in Belthangady taluk. 

He had left Dubai on March 21 and land at Bengaluru Airport. Then he reached Belthangady through a KSRTC bus the very next morning. 

As he was suffering from fever and cough, he was admitted to Puttur government hospital on March 24. Same day his throat swab sample was sent for coronavirus testing. Today it was declared positive. 

His condition is said to be stable. However, his family members and those who were in touch with him are under observation.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 6: The 105-year-old Bageerathi Amma who scripted history when she appeared for her fourth standard exam in last November becoming the oldest learner of the Kerala State Literacy Mission has passed her exam with 74.5 per cent marks.

This grandmother from Parakulam in Kollam district of Kerala Bageerathi Amma has six children and 16 grandchildren.

Speaking to news agency ANI, CK Pradeep Kumar, district co-ordinator of State Literary Mission said on Wednesday, "Bageerathi Amma has passed her exam with 74.5 per cent marks. It is really an inspiration for others to follow her and continue their education," he said.

Ms Bageerathi had to stop her education at the age of nine when she was in Class 3 as she had to take care of her younger siblings.

Her yearning to continue her studies was fulfilled with the help of officials of the Literary Mission who helped her to realize her dreams. She scored 205 marks out of a total of 275 in the fourth standard equivalency examination.

The Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority is an autonomous institution under the General Education Department, Government of Kerala.

The programme aims to develop literacy skills through continuing education, provide chances of each and everyone interested in learning, enable the learners to make use of their learning in their daily life and ensure Secondary-level education to the whole of Kerala.

The main beneficiaries of this programme are illiterates, neo-literates, school drop-outs and those interested in lifelong education.
