Kiku Sharda's arrest murder of freedom of expression: Piyush Mishra

January 20, 2016

Mumbai, Jan 20: Lyricist-actor Piyush Mishra today said the arrest of TV comedian Kiku Sharda was a murder of freedom of expression.

kikuActor Sikander Kher too voiced the same sentiment. Sharda was recently arrested for mimicking the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and subsequently released.

"It is anarchism, stupidity and insulting... It is like killing the freedom of expression," Mishra told reporters at the trailer launch of "Tere Bin Laden- Dead or Alive" here.

Mishra's co-star in the film, actor Manish Paul, said if a person is imitating someone, it means he is doing it out of respect.

"Everyone has their own comedy.... Our motive is to bring a smile to people's faces but if they have a problem with that then we cannot do anything about that," he said.

Sikander, who also stars in the film, said people cannot be arrested for their comedy. "It's absolutely preposterous. It's killing of freedom of expression. Comedy is comedy world over. People should laugh, you can't arrest somebody," he said.

To which Mishra added, "Deepak Dobriyal had said on a news channel that he (Ram Rahim Singh) came and made a joke of the film industry by making MSG (his film, 'Messenger of God'), so why can't we make fun of him?"

Asked about the growing number of adult comedies in Bollywood, Paul said these films have an audience too. "If you don't like it then don't watch it," he said. Mishra, who has starred in the bold comedy "The Shaukeens", however, said there should be "some limit".

"I disagree. There should be some limit... You can't show anything. My sister and mother are sitting beside me and you cannot show anything." To which Paul said, "Sir films like these are not to be watched with sisters..." Directed by Abhishek Sharma, "Tere Bin Laden- Dead or Alive" is a sequel to the 2010 "Tere Bin Laden". The film is scheduled to release on February 19.

Chennai, Mar 28: Chennai City Corporation personnel stuck a home quarantine sticker at the office of actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam office on Saturday, leading to speculation that the matinee star was quarantined for the coronavirus.

While there was speculation if Kamal Haasan was quarantined, the Greater Chennai Corporation said their staffers pasted the sticker on the premises because actress Gautami Tadimalli "returned from Dubai recently and her passport has this address (Eldams Road in upscale Alwarpet)."

The present residence of the actress was not known immediately.

The sticker read, "We are in home quarantine to safeguard ourselves and Chennai from the coronavirus." It was removed soon, an official said, declining to elaborate.

Kamal Haasan clarified in a statement that he was not quarantined.

"Based on the notice stuck outside my house, news has been spread saying that I have been quarantined. But most of you already know that I have not been living there for the past few years and the Makkal Needhi Maiam party office has been functioning from there," he said.

Further, the actor said, the news that he has been quarantined "is not true."

As a precautionary measure, he has been maintaining social distancing, he said.

Mumbai, May 10: Nearly a month after recovering from the coronavirus, actor Zoa Morani says she has donated her blood plasma to do her bit in helping the patients currently suffering from the novel virus. The actor, who was quarantined and kept under medication in April, also urged those who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma.

"Donated my blood today for the Plasma therapy trials at Nair hospital. It was fascinating! Always a silver lining I suppose. The team there was so enthusiastic and careful. There was a general physician on standby just incase of emergency and the equipment brand new and safe (sic)," Zoa wrote on Instagram on Saturday.

She thanked the doctors for taking care of her and hoped patients benefit from the donation.

"All #Covid19 recovered people can be a part of this trial, to help others covid patients recover! I hope this works #IndiaFightsCorona. They even gave me a certificate and Rs 500. Wont lie, I felt super cool today (sic)," she added.

Zoa, along with her sister Shaza and father, producer Karim Morani had tested positive for coronavirus in April. All three were discharged from the hospital after testing negative last month.

Indore, Jan 14: Yoga guru Ramdev has said that Deepika Padukone should hire persons like him for offering correct advice, days after the actress had visited Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi following the violence at the campus earlier this month.

"Deepika Padukone needs to study about political, social and cultural issues. She should understand more about our country. Only after gaining knowledge, she should take decisions. I feel she should have persons like Swami Ramdev for correct advice," Ramdev said at an event here on Monday.

On January 7, Padukone joined the protest at JNU after a masked mob entered the varsity campus and attacked the students and teachers with sticks and rods on January 5.

Several BJP leaders questioned the support extended by Padukone. On the other hand, the Congress threw their weight behind the actress for her stand.
