Chandigarh, Nov 30: Kirron Kher, the Member of Parliament, on Wednesday stoked a controversy with her remarks on the Chandigarh gangrape case. According to her, the 22-year-old woman should not have boarded the autorickshaw when there were already three men sitting inside it.

During a press conference in Chandigarh, when asked about the incident, she said, “Bachi ki samajhdaari ko bhi main thoda sa kehna chahti hun… saari bachiyon ko.. ki already jab koi teen aadmi baithe hue hain uske andar… to aapko usme bethna nahi chaeye tha….I am saying this to protect the girls.”

The incident was reported a few days back when the woman had taken an auto to go back to her paying guest accommodation in Mohali. She was returning back after attending a stenography class in Sector 37. The girl was raped in the moving auto by three men who later dumped her in Sector 53. She was spotted by the passersby, who informed the police.

“Hum log bhi kabhi taxi lete the Mumbai mein… to kisi na kisi ko bhi..jo hamare sath hota tha… usse taxi ka number likha dete the.. because we want our safety as girls.. I remember as a girl… so mujhe lagta hai hum sab ko aaj kal ke zamane mein in cheezon ke liye sakhat hona padega (Whenever we took a taxi in Mumbai, we used to let someone know the taxi number …I feel that in these times, we also have to be more careful about these things),” she said.

Expressing pain over the incident, she said, “I feel really sad for the victim.” The MP also pitched for the need for the families to educate their boys.

Questioned about the absence of the Women’s Commission in Chandigarh, she said what was the need for a Mahila Aayog when the city has a woman MP , a woman mayor and a woman SSP.
