KSA’s courts tackle 5,183 alimony cases in 5 months

Jeddah, Apr 6: Some 5,183 cases have been filed by women against their husbands in Saudi courts, requesting alimony during the past five months, according to local media.

saudi cases Courts in Makkah Region received the highest number of alimony cases at 1,605, followed by Riyadh (1,315), the Eastern Region (755), Jazan (376), Madinah (295), Asir (241), Qasim (186), Tabuk (102), Hail (90), Jouf (79), the Northern Border (50), Baha (48), and Najran (41), the report said.

Commenting on this phenomenon, social worker Abdulaziz al-Ulayyan said “alimony can be employed even if there is no agreement on alimony between the spouses. A wife is entitled to alimony as soon as the marriage contract is signed, even if the marriage was not consummated.”

He said that alimony is estimated in accordance with the husband’s financial and social status on the condition that the marriage contract is legally sound.

“Divorced women are entitled to alimony during the divorce period — a grace period when a woman should stay at home to make sure that she is not pregnant before she should either return to her husband or marry another,” he said.

Kuwait allows international travel from Aug 1; residents from these countries excluded

Kuwait will allow citizens and residents to travel to and from the country, starting August 1, the government communication center tweeted on early Thursday, citing a cabinet decision.

The decision excludes residents coming from Bangladesh, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Nepal.

Last month, Kuwait announced it would partially resume commercial flights from August, but does not expect to reach full capacity until a year later, as its aviation sector gradually recovers from a suspension sparked by the Covid-19 crisis.

Banks asked to search and seize B R Shetty’s accounts in UAE

Dubai, Apr 26: The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has instructed financial institutions in the country to search and freeze all bank accounts of Indian billionaire BR Shetty and his family along with those of companies where he has a stake.

The apex bank has also blacklisted several firms associated with Shetty along with their entire senior management.

In an advisory issued last week, CBUAE cited decisions of the Federal Attorney General and asked financial institutions to search and freeze any bank accounts, deposits or investments in the name of Shetty or his family members.

Financial institutions have been directed to stop transfers from these accounts and deny access to deposit boxes.

Currently in India and facing a string of charges, Shetty is the founder of NMC Health.

The heathcare provider was placed into administration by a UK court recently following an application by the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) which alone has an exposure of $981 million (Dh3.6 billion).

Overall, UAE banks have a combined exposure of more than Dh8bn to NMC which owes money to Oman-based banks and financial institutions as well.

Probing credit facilities
The Central Bank has sought information about credit facilites extended to the Shettys along with details of their safe deposit boxes and the financial transfers they have made till date.

A similar advisory has been issued for NMC Healthcare and NMC Holding, based on the decision of the Head of Plenary Fund Prosecution.

The Central Bank has also blacklisted several companies associated with Shetty. Key staff members of these firms have been similarly blacklisted.

COVID-19: Saudi Arabia reports 493 new cases, 6 deaths

Dubai, Apr 15: Saudi Arabia reported 493 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 5869, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

According to the ministry of health, the number of recoveries today are 42 cases, making total of recoveries in the kingdom 931. And 71 critical cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 6 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 79.

Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar. This week the curfew was extended until further notice.

Overall, Saudi Arabia has reported one of the lowest rates of infection in the region, with around 5,000 cases in a population of over 30 million. Mecca was one of the first Saudi cities to be placed under a full-day curfew, and authorities took unprecedented precautions, suspending religious tourism in February and closing mosques across the country in March.
