L K Advani stakes claim to fight LS polls from Gandhinagar seat

February 28, 2014

Ahmedabad, Feb 28: A day after BJP's first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls was declared, veteran BJP leader L K Advani today expressed interest to contest elections from his current constituency, Gandhinagar.lk_advani

"The first list of the candidates has been declared yesterday in which my name is not there. I have come here today to Gandhinagar to participate in a vigilance committee meeting, which clearly shows that I am interested. But party will take a final decision," Advani told reporters in response to a query.

A five-time MP from Gandhinagar, Advani was earlier offered a Rajya Sabha seat by his party but declined to enter the house of elders, choosing to continue in electoral politics.Advani has remained unbeaten from his Gandhinagar seat five times in 1991, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. In the 2009 elections, when he was BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Advani won the hustings with the margin of 1.21 lakh votes defeating his nearest rival Suresh Patel of Congress.

However, things have changed between 2009 and 2014 for the 87-year-old leader, due to his posturing against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi when the latter was declared as the prime ministerial candidate, though he gradually reconciled to the fact and then praised the BJP strongman time and again.

Many senior members did not make it in the first list of candidates declared by the BJP yesterday, though leaders like Nitin Gadkari and Gopinath Munde found a place in it.

The Gandhinagar seat is considered to be one of the safest seats for the BJP due to large urban areas of Ahmedabad city also being part of the constituency where the party has a big following. Modi is yet to decide on which seat will he fight elections from the state, party sources said.

Advani further told the media that, "after the emergency as the Congress received a drubbing, this time also that party will face poll reverses. I had earlier said in one of my blogposts that I would not be surprised if the ruling party will not reach three digits."

He expressed hope that BJP will gain maximum seats in the country but stayed away from giving any figure saying that it depends upon the people of the country.Advani today participated in a district vigilance committee meeting related to his constituency here.

Hyderabad, Jul 12: Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday condemned the demolition of a mosque and a temple inside the Secretariat building. He demanded the arrest of the contractor for demolition.
"During the process of demolition of the Secretariat building in Telangana, the mosque and temple were also demolished. The contractor must be booked and should be arrested. The public should know that we condemn this," he said while speaking to news agency.
Pointing out that his party MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi and Moazam Khan have urged the state Assembly to look into the matter, he added, "We are not against the building of a new Secretariat, but what we asked for is not to destroy these structures during the process."
He welcomed the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the rebuilding of these structures.
"We expect the mosque to be built in the exact same place where it once stood. We expect the Chief Minister to speak to the representatives and meet our expectations and emotions about the mosque," he added.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 29: With Saudi Arabia indefinitely suspending visas for visit to Islam's holiest site for the Umrah pilgrimage in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, more than 10,000 people in the state who are awaiting their turn this year for the annual Hajj pilgrimage are a worried lot.

"This year more than 10,000 people in Kerala have been cleared by the Hajj committee," said C Muhammed Faizy, chairman, Kerala State Hajj Committee.

"There is no cause of worry. We hope that during the time of the pilgrimage, the travel restriction by Saudi Arabia will be lifted," he said.

Umrah is a pilgrimage to the holy site that can be undertaken at any time of the year, while the annual Hajj pilgrimage has specific months according to the lunar calendar.

"The move by the Saudi Arabian Government to impose travel restriction was due to the outbreak of coronavirus. It is a preventive step to contain it. In such large gatherings, if one person is affected, it will spread to others. So we fully understand the concerns of the Saudi Government," Muhammed Faizy added.

He said that the Hajj Committee only processes the requests of annual Hajj visit pilgrims and not Umrah.

"This year we expect the Hajj pilgrimage season to be from June to August after Ramzan. But it may vary according to the Ramzan date. We are yet to get any official correspondence from the Saudi Government regarding travel restrictions," he added.

The Saudi Arabian Government suspended visas for tourists from countries affected by the coronavirus, with many having to cancel their Umrah pilgrimage at the last minute.
