Let's not discriminate: Farhan Akhtar on Kangana-Hrithik row

Mumbai, Oct 8: Without taking any names, director-actor Farhan Akhtar today reacted to the much publicised Hrithik Roshan-Kangana Ranaut fiasco, saying the people and the media should not jump to conclusions or "discriminate" on the basis of gender.

The 43-year-old star, who has acted with Hrithik in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" and directed him in "Lakshya", said he does not have the authority to decide "who is right or wrong" but believes it was necessary to comment on the situation.

"I agree that in our society, more often than not, it is the woman who suffers injustice and repression. It is horrifying but true that in some cases of rape, a section of society has blamed the victim. I have always found this to be unacceptable.

"... Although it is true that in most cases it is a woman that has been wronged, there is a difference between 'most' and 'all'. However, few and rare they may be, there have been cases where men have been stalked, harassed and falsely accused... It is in this spirit of objectivity and fairness that today I must speak up," Farhan wrote in a lengthy Facebook post.

The "Wazir" actor said he is not happy with the way the media has dealt with the episode, only presenting one version of the story.

"They've accepted her story at face value. Isn't this discriminating against the other party? For a moment, let's put aside emotion, prejudice, biases, our understandably protective instincts and look at the facts as they exist today."

Farhan said while Hrithik has been cooperating with the Cyber Crime Department by submitting all necessary information and documents, the "woman has avoided submitting personal communication devices" till date.

According to reports, Hrithik received explicit emails from Kangana's account and Farhan said, "If a woman was to receive these sort of emails from a man and she claimed harassment, what would your immediate reaction be?

"Would you have given the man the benefit of doubt by believing him if he said they were in a relationship and she had hacked into his computer and sent herself the mails...? Chances are you wouldn't."

Farhan urged people not to pass judgement without knowing the truth.

"The reason I felt the need to say this is that it is apparent that some people have already jumped to conclusions while some are deriving some sort of voyeuristic pleasure by encouraging the woman to carry on speaking.

"This is being done without a seconds pause to consider the effect her words will have on the person, his family or his children. As great as all of it may be for TRP, it's in terrible taste," he added.

Farhan said people "must avoid vilifying the man on the basis of unsubstantiated statements."

"... Let's not discriminate," he concluded.

While Kangana has been vocal about the matter since past one year, Hrithik had not gone public with his side of the story until recently after the Roshans decided to file a complaint with the Cyber Crime Department.

The 43-year-old star also took to social media to present his version.

Los Angeles, Jan 27: Lil Nas X, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and... Michelle Obama?

Yep.

The former first lady can now add Grammy winner to her resume, after snagging the award on music's biggest night for Best Spoken Word Album, for the audiobook of her memoir Becoming.

Her win on Sunday gives the Obama household its third Grammy: former president Barack Obama has already snagged two Grammys in the same category for his books.

She faced an eccentric group of rivals that included Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys for Beastie Boys Book and John Waters, the director-performer known for his transgressive cult films, for Mr. Know-It-All.

Released in late 2018, Becoming saw the former first lady slam U.S. president Donald Trump for questioning her husband's citizenship and promoting the notion that he was born abroad.

"The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed," Obama wrote.

America's first black first lady also dug into her personal life in her book, expounding on issues including a miscarriage, using in-vitro fertilization to conceive her daughters and marriage counseling.

Los Angeles, Mar 12: Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks has revealed that he and wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The actor couple, currently in Australia to shoot for the pre-production of Baz Luhrmann's untitled Elvis Presley film, decided to get tested after they felt "a bit tired".

"Hey folks Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive," Hanks said in a tweet.

The Academy-award-winning actor said the medical team had already taken over.

"The medical officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks will be tested, observed and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires," Hanks said.

"Not much more to it than one-day at a time approach, no? We will keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves!" Hanks tweeted.

Washington, May 18: Joining hands with the European Commission, actor Leonardo DiCaprio launched the Virunga Fund with seed money of USD 2 million to support Africa's Virunga National Park.

Since Virunga has lost a significant amount of revenue due to COVID shutdown post-March, the fund will be used to support the national park and the communities around, reported Variety.

The fund is aimed at disease prevention efforts, protection of mountain gorilla, and other species.

"I had the great honor of meeting and supporting Virunga's courageous team in their fight against illegal oil drilling in 2013," Variety quoted DiCaprio as saying.

"Virunga urgently needs funds to protect the endangered mountain gorilla population, to provide support to the rangers and the families of rangers who have fallen in the line of duty, and to help deliver essential disease prevention efforts. It's critical that we rally together during this time of incredible crisis," he added.

The 'Titanic' actor had earlier produced a Netflix documentary film 'Virunga' which is based on the national park.
