Udupi, April 5: Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat said the life and ideologies of Babu Jagjivan Ram is a model for the youth.

MLA Raghupathy Bhat among others at the inauguration of105th birth anniversary celebrations of Babu Jagjivan Ram in Udupi on Thursday. The saga of this great fighter who sprang to great level despite hailing from backward society is worth imbibing.

Speaking at the 105th birth anniversary celebrations of Babu Jagjivan Ram organised by District Administration, Zilla Panchayath, CMC and Social Welfare Department, Udupi District at Ambedkar Bhavan, he said the achievements of Babu Jagjivan Ram was not owing to reservations. It was absolutely on his merits.

“Jagjeevan Ram handled many high ranking portfolios like defense and labour besides handling the post of deputy prime minister for a while. The rise of the uncontroversial leader came in as he fought against all odds that came his way,” he said.

He pioneered the thought of decent living for the people belonging to backward communities. Besides he was also stern over the fact that mere financial empowerment is not enough but there was need to build confidence on the people hailing from backward communities.

Delivering the keynote address Government First Grade College, Post Graduate Center Head Gananath Yekkaru said that Jagjivan Ram and Ambedkar should be held responsible for the dignified life that the backward community people are living today.Babu Jagjivan Ram embodied all essentials of intellectuals as he was the epitome of knowledge, skills and values, he added.

Stating that Jagjivan Ram was a political genius in true sense, Yekkaru said this great fighter should be the role model for today's politicians and youth. He said that conversion is not the solution for all problems, instead there is need for internal conversion, he added.

Earlier the celebration was inaugurated by ZP President Katpadi Shankar Poojary.

Hubli, Feb 17: A local court here on Monday sent three Kashmiri students who were arrested on charges of sedition to judicial custody till March 2.

They were arrested for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media, told police.

All three were taken into custody by the police on Sunday night and were produced before a local court on Monday.

Karwar, Jan 4: One student died and twelve others were seriously injured when a school bus in which they were travelling from Anantapur district fell into a gorge near Gerusoppa Soolemarki Cross in Honnavar taluk of Uttar Kannada district last night, police said on Saturday.

The deceased student has been identified as T Basha Fakruddin (14).

Police said on that on Friday students of a government school from Anantapur district were on a trip to Jog, Murdeshwar and other places. There were 44 children, nine teachers and four cooking staff in the bus, police said.

Mangaluru, Jul 19: Two flights with 346 stranded Kannadigas from Sharjah and Dammam landed at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Saturday night.

MIA officials said on Sunday that the chartered flight from Dammam landed with 178 stranded people, while an Air India flight from Sharjah landed with 168 stranded passengers under the 'Vande Bharat Mission'.

All the passengers on their arrival underwent health checkup and were sent for seven days institutional quarantine. They will undergo swab tests during the quarantine period, health officials said.
