Little known KC Cariappa bought by KKR for 2.4 crore

February 17, 2015

Bengaluru, Feb 17: It took some time coming, but by far, the biggest surprise package of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) player auctions in Bengaluru turned out to be a local boy. Konganda Charamanna (or KC) Cariappa, a very highly-rated mystery spinner in the Karnataka cricket circuit, was purchased by defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping Rs.2.4 crore. k c cariappa

An unknown in India’s domestic circles, Cariappa shot to fame in the 2014 edition of the Karnataka Premier League (KPL), an inter-state Twenty20 tournament organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Cariappa’s impressive displays in the KPL, where he picked up 11 wickets in six matches representing the Bijapur Bulls, earned him a call-up to the preliminary squad of the Karnataka Ranji Trophy. Besides, he has represented Karnataka Under-19s in limited over competitions. Known to be a limited-overs specialist, Cariappa represents Socials Cricket Club in Bengaluru’s premier club cricket competition.

Sudhindra Shinde, Cariappa’s personal coach reckons that while the limited overs formats are his strength, his performances in long-format cricket have also been improving. Shinde, a former Karnataka Ranji cricketer himself, says, “His main skill is to spin the ball both ways. Not just skill, he’s got great control for a spinner and importantly, his reading of the game is very impressive.” During one of the KPL matches against Mysore, Cariappa, says Shinde, was all over Manish Pandey, before scalping him. Shinde adds, “He’s a mature, thinking cricketer, who reads various situations very well.” While Cariappa’s purchase by KKR might have surprised those who follow the sport, people around him, including Shinde say that they’d been expecting it. “We had planned his career path, and we knew that the IPL wasn’t far away. So, this is not as much of a surprise to us,” he says, before adding, “We were aware of their (IPL franchises) interest.” KKR and other franchises were monitoring Cariappa’s feats at the local level. It was during KPL that the Kolkata-based franchise made their initial move, identifying Cariappa’s exploits in the Twenty20 tournament through a local scout named Srikanth to monitor his performances.

The only surprise, Shinde says, was the money he went for—a whopping Rs.2.4 crore. In a phone interview, Cariappa clarified that he was not a video analyst, as some news reports said. “I am just a player.” In fact, Srikanth, the KKR scout who followed him through the KPL and recommended him to the franchise, happened to be the video analyst of his team, the Bijapur Bulls.? Cariappa said he wasn’t expecting the Rs.2.4 crore KKR paid for him. “To be honest, I was expecting the base price (of Rs.10 lakh).”? On his bowling style, he said, “I began by playing tennis ball cricket. Leather ball cricket happened by chance, and once I started bowling with the leather ball, the people around me encouraged me to bowl.” He added, “My stock delivery is the leg spinner and I bowl the carrom ball and I am working harder on my off-spin,” he added. Cariappa further said that his action was legal (as per BCCI and ICC regulations) and in fact, (as reported earlier in this story) does not resemble Sri Lankan Ajantha Mendis or West Indies spinner Sunil Narine. “My action has been the same since I started playing tennis ball cricket,” he said. His bowling arsenal includes a sharp carrom ball, a back of the hand googly and according to his team-mates, has recently developed an off-spinner.

Karachi, Jul 3: Pakistan limited overs captain Babar Azam is tired of his constant comparisons with India skipper Virat Kohli and says he would rather be compared to the greats at home.

Babar, six years younger to Kohli, has a long way to go in getting close to Kohli's staggering numbers across formats. The India skipper has 70 hundreds to his name and averages more than 50 in all three formats.

"I would be more happy if you compare to me say a Javed Miandad, Muhammad Yousuf or Younis Khan. Why compare me to Kohli or any Indian player?" asked the 25-year-old, who is in England with the national team, said in an online media interaction on Thursday.

Babar has scored 16 international hundreds and averages more than 50 in ODIs and T20s. In 26 Tests, he has scored 1850 runs at 45.12.

He also said that he is not targeting any English bowler for the series next month.

"I don’t see who the bowler is or his reputation. I just try to play each ball on merit. England no doubt has a top bowling attack and they have advantage of playing at home but this is a challenge I want to score runs in," he said.

Before the squad’s departure for England, Pakistan batting coach Younis Khan said that pacer Joffra Archer will be a handful for the Pakistani batsmen.

Babar said that he would try to play every English bowler on merit but conceded that after getting runs in Australia last year, he was keen to leave his footprint in the coming Test and T20 series in England.

Reminded that some former Test players had already written off Pakistan for the England series, Babar said they were entitled to their opinion.

"But we don’t have a bad team and already we have been enjoying our training. It is good to be back on the field after such a long lay-off. I think we have the bowlers to trouble them like Abbas, Naseem, Shaheen and others while we have some experience in our batting line-up."

Babar said he would love to get a triple century in a Test match.

"When you score a century, you naturally want to go on and convert that into a double or a triple century. This is something I would like to do during the Test series.

"I like to play my natural game but my selection of shots depends on the conditions and bowlers."

Babar also ruled out any problems in the Pakistan dressing room due to the presence of former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was sacked last year.

But he said that since Muhammad Rizwan had been playing in all formats for Pakistan in recent times, he would be the starting keeper in the Test series ahead of Sarfaraz.

"I think we first have to give Rizwan a proper chance and Sarfaraz is there as back up."

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

New Delhi, Apr 2: BJP MP and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Thursday said that he will donate his two year's salary to PM-CARES Fund to support the battle against coronavirus pandemic in the country.

"People ask what can their country do for them. The real question is what can you do for your country? I am donating my 2 year's salary to #PMCaresFund. You should come forward too! @narendramodi @JPNadda @BJP4Delhi #IndiaFightsCorona," Gambhir tweeted.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 1965 on Thursday after 131 people confirmed positive in the past 12 hours, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

At present, there are 1764 COVID-19 active cases in the country and 50 people have died due to the lethal infection.
