Love your language, not religion: Javed Akhtar

March 14, 2015

New Delhi, Mar 14: For noted scriptwriter, lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar, language has no religion and says those who cry foul over "purity of language" should know that it is non-existent.

Speaking at 'Jashn-e-Rekhta', a festival celebrating Urdu language organised by Rekhta organisation here, Akhtar hit out at those who aim to "divide people on linguistic lines".

Javed Akhtar"Those who raise questions about dying languages, should know that there is a big question mark on all the languages today. Economic benefits have become the sole criteria of keeping a language alive," he said.

The 70-year-old artist refuted notions of mixing language and religion."Urdu was the first language that was secular, anti-fundamentalist and anti-conventions since the beginning. ... we label Urdu as a language of Muslims or a particular region or country," he said.

On a recent instance of replacing Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Maanto's writings by a university in Punjab with Japanese stories in its MA syllabus, Akhtar said, "Learning a foreign tongue is applaudable. But is learning it at the cost of one's mother tongue right?"

Looking at the fate of indigenous languages in a globalised world, he noted, "People have created skewed notions about learning Indian languages. Today, if you are well versed in Hindi or Urdu, people question your upbringing, he said.Leaving the audience in splits with his witty replies, Akhtar, who has penned many successful Bollywood songs also took a dig at his industry's "badzabaan" (scurrilous).

"There is no language left in films today. Everything is a hybrid version of everything else, whether it is songs, dialogues or scripts," he said.

On a serious note, the artist who had received two Padma awards, said that languages are not just a "communication tool", they are one's "identity as well"."Love your language, not the religion," he quipped.

Akhtar also pointed out the short-comings of the Indian education system that does not allow children to "explore their mother tongue".

"Though learning a universal language is important, but a child has the right to use his mother tongue on a public platform. What is the point to learn something that can not be used? There should be provisions for him to write his examinations in his language," he opined.

The artist also shared his current pursuit with the audience."I am currently working on the writings of my grandfather. We will shortly come up with a five volume compilation of my grandfather's writings," he said.Sanjeev Saraf, founder, Rekhta talked about the "beauty, diversity and inclusiveness of Urdu" as the guiding force behind the two-day festival.

"The festival is a celebration of a beautiful language. It is aimed at bringing together a set of language lovers, especially the youth who have taken an active interest in our website, Rekhta-the largest online collection of Urdu poetry," he said.

"There is a common perception that Urdu is a dying language or it appeals to a certain section of the society. But the language appeals to all. It is very much alive, rocking and kicking," Saraf added.

Los Angeles, Jul 20: Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr and Tom Holland have joined their "Avengers: Endgame" co-star Chris Evans in sending sweet messages to a young boy who saved his sister from a dog attack.

Six-year-old Bridger saved his four-year-old sister on July 9 by standing between her and a charging dog.

According to Nicole Noel Walker, his aunt, the child received 90 stitches after getting bitten by the canine.

After Walker reached out to the Avengers team through an Instagram post, Evans, in a video message, promised to send Bridger, an avid Avengers fan, "an authentic Captain America shield".

Now the 'Iron-Man' star promised he will gift Bridger something "special" on his next birthday.

"Bridger, you're a rockstar. I hear (Captain America) sent a shield your way. I'm gonna do one better, you call me on your next birthday. I got something special for you. By the way, that's a promise. A promise beats a shield," Downey Jr said.

Holland, meanwhile, spoke to Bridger on a video call and invited him to come to the sets of the next "Spider-Man" film.

"If you ever want to come to set and hang out, and see the Spider-Man suit up close, and hang out with us, you're always welcome. I want to say you are so brave, mate. We are all so proud of you, and your little sister is so lucky to have someone like you," he added.

Other Marvel stars Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson, Hollywood star Anne Hathaway, "The Flash" series stars Grant Gustin and Robbie Amell also praised Bridger's bravery.

Mumbai, Aug 2: Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron has come aboard as an executive producer on filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane's movie The Disciple. The Marathi feature is set to represent India at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It will be screened in the Competition section of the prestigious film gala.

The movie, which is Tamhane's follow-up to his National Award-winning feature Court, has also been selected for 2020 Toronto International Film Festival's official line-up.

"I met Chaitanya through a mentorship program where I had the opportunity to watch his very superb debut film, Court  I was immediately impressed by his sense of cinema and fearless confidence to tell stories.

"He was part of most of Roma's process and I jumped to the opportunity to be part of the process of his second film The Disciple. I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema," Cuaron said in a statement.

Tamhane said he is honoured to have Cuaron aboard the film.

"It’s a bit surreal and an incredible honour for me to have one of the most recognised and acclaimed filmmakers in the world be part of 'The Disciple'. In some ways, this validation from Alfonso Cuaron is even more," he added.

The Disciple, a 127-minute long feature, stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. It has been produced by “Sir” actor Vivek Gomber through his Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

The Disciple marks Tamhane’s return to Venice after he won the Best Film - Orizzonti and Lion of the Future award for Court in 2014.

Court, a poignant commentary on India's judicial system, also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2015 and was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Oscars.

Endeavor Content will sell North American rights and New Europe Film Sales boards the film as an international sales agent.
