Malaysia bans Dr Zakir Naik from making public speeches to appease minority Hindus: Report

Newsroom, Aug 20: The Malaysia has reported barred self-exiled Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik from making public speeches after many leaders of the minority Hindu community in the Muslim-majority country launched a political campaign against him.

The move comes days after the Dr Naik’s videos emerged on August 8 where he said Malaysian Hindus enjoy more than 100% rights unlike Indian Muslims. He also reportedly claimed that Malaysian Hindus were more loyal to the Indian prime minister than Malaysian PM. This had reportedly hurt the sentiments of Malaysian Hindus.

Royal Malaysia Police corporate communications head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Asmawati Ahmad confirmed news of ban of Dr Naik’s speeches, following a leaked circular that was issued to all state-level police chiefs, local media claimed.

“Yes. Such an order has been given to all police contingents, and this was done in the interest of national security and to preserve racial harmony,” she said when contacted on Tuesday, a news website quoted.

Dr Zakir had been barred by seven states of Malaysia - Melaka, Johor, Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Perlis and Sarawak - from speaking in public, after his recent racial remarks.

Dr Naik, who has lived in Malaysia for about three years after he was granted permanent residency, has been at the centre of a storm over his opinion about Malaysian Hindus. Three ministers of Malaysian have demanded he should be expelled.

Human resource minister and Hindu leader M Kulasegaran, one of the senior-most Hindu politicians in the Malaysian coalition government, had said in a statement that Naik’s “actions do not reflect one deserving of a permanent resident status”.

He said the time had come for the “fugitive foreigner to leave Malaysia and to face charges of terrorism and money laundering...in India”.

Dr Naik’s case figured at a cabinet meeting and home minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that some elements were spreading “fake news” and making “racist statements...without considering the sensitivities of Malaysians”.

Bengaluru, Feb 25: In the view of 2nd PUC exams from March 4, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has approved free travel for students from home to exam centre on Monday.

"BMTC has extended free travel facility to all PUC students from their residence to examination centre on production of exam hall/admission ticket," said a press note.

BMTC has been issuing student concessional passes to travel from their residence to college at concessional rates for the benefit of students.

Bengaluru, May 25: The 36-hour marathon lockdown call given by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, passed off peacefully with people opting to remain inside their houses and cooperate with the state government to fight against spread of deadly Covid-19.

Though the call was only for 24 hours from 7 am (Sunday) to 7 am (Monday) another 12 hours was added to it as the night curfew was already in force from 7 pm on Saturday and the next day (Sunday) it continued till Monday up to 7 am.

Autorickshaws and bus service were off the road giving a tough time to people arriving from neighbouring places reach home that too during the night. Adding to their woes was heavy rain that lashed the city for more than two hours on Sunday evening flooding the streets.

Bengaluru,  Jul 12: In view of the rising COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru, a complete lockdown will be implemented in Bengaluru City and Bengaluru Rural areas from 8 pm on July 14 to 5 am on July 22.

"Essentials such as hospitals, groceries, milk, fruit, vegetables, medicines will be available during this period. In addition, medical and postgraduate examinations will happen as already scheduled," the Karnataka CMO informed.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa appealed: "Co-operate with all social security policies, wear masks, and abide by government-issued lock-down guidelines for buying everyday items. Your collaboration is essential to controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection."

"I would like to congratulate all Asha activists, medical and police personnel, officers, volunteers, journalists and all those who work directly and indirectly to control the spread of COVID-19 infection," he added.
