Man gets 3 years in jail for killing brother-in-law over land row

Mangaluru, Dec 2: A local court here has sentenced a 35-year-old man to three years imprisonment on finding him guilty of bludgeoning the brother of his wife to death.

According to the chargesheet by the Uppinangady police, Ramesh (35) was not happy with his mother-in-law Kalyani over the latter’s partition of agricultural land between him and his brother in law Balakrishna (24).

On November 24, 2014, there was a heated exchange between Ramesh and Balakrishna around 2.30 p.m. in Kalanje and the former hit the latter with a stone. Balakrishna collapsed and died a few hours later. Ramesh was charged under Section 302 of the IPC (Murder).

Prosecutor Narayan Shettigar examined 18 witnesses.

After detailed hearing, third Additional District and Sessions Judge Muralidhar Pai B observed that Ramesh did not have any intention to murder his brother-in-law.

The judge acquitted Ramesh of the charge under Section 302 while convicting him under Section 304 (2) (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. The judge also directed him to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to Ms. Kalyani.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Rupesh has written to her counterpart at Valsad to make food and accommodation arrangements for two persons from Puttur who are stranded at Ambergaon village in their district due to lockdown.

Valsad is a district near Gujarat-Maharashtra border.

Ashik Hussain and Mohammed Takeen Maril, have been stuck at the RTO check post of Ambergaon for the last 21 days. The duo have been staying in their car, without proper accommodation or food.

Bengaluru, Mar 16: Hundreds of people gathered to felicitate the newly appointed Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Monday.

"Everyone is a team, I'm not alone. We all are together and we will work together," Kumar had said after his appointment.

Shivakumar was appointed as the chief of Karnataka Congress last week on Wednesday.

Party leaders Eshwar Khandre, Satish Jarkiholi and Saleem Ahmed were appointed working presidents of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Bantwal, Jan 15: Two people died in a head-on collision between two two-wheelers at Mani-Mysuru Highway in Bantwal last night, police said on Wednesday.

Police said that Parikshit (19) and Padmanabha Gowda (28) were heading towards Mane while Mohammed Ajmal (19) on his activa was on his way towards Kodaje when they collided head-on.

All the victims were immediately rushed to hospital for treatment where two of them breathed its last after not responding to the treatment.

Parikshit and Ajmal lost their lives while Gowda suffered critical injuries, the police said.

In another road accident reported from Kodangayi near Radukatte in Vittla, seven people including women and children sustained injuries when a Maruti Omni and another vehicle collided here on Tuesday evening.
