Man who let wife go with lover in exchange for 71 sheep held on theft charge

Gorakhpur, Aug 19: In a strange love triangle, a husband agreed to let his wife go away with her lover in exchange for 71 sheep in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur.

The exchange was made in the presence of the panchayat which directed the woman's lover to compensate her husband with half of his flock.

The matter came into limelight when the husband took the case to the panchayat after his wife eloped with her lover on July 22.

The husband was identified as Rajesh while the lover was identified as Umesh.

When the lovers were interrogated by the panchayat, they expressed their willingness to live together. The woman said she was not happy in her marriage.

Taking cognisance of the situation, Umesh was given a choice to either face punishment for having an extramarital affair or compensate his lover's husband with a flock of sheep. He chose love over his livestock and gave away 71 sheep to Rajesh.

However, a few days later things became heated when Umesh's father questioned the panchayat's decision and accused Rajesh of stealing his sheep.

He also lodged a complaint with the police wanting his sheep back. Following this, the police arrested Rajesh and took back all 71 sheep from him.

"A theft case has been registered against Rajesh. The sheep recovered from the accused have been handed over to Umesh's father," Dr Sunil Gupta, Senior Superintendent of Police told news agency.

"My wife ran away with Umesh. Panchayat took a decision to give me sheep in exchange for my wife. Now, a theft case has been registered against me," Rajesh said.

Lucknow, May 1: Six members of a family were allegedly hacked to death by another family member over a property dispute in Gudauli village in the Banthra area on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, police said.

The accused, Ajay Singh (26), went to the local police station after committing the crime and surrendered, they added.

Singh allegedly had a heated argument with the family members over a property and attacked them with a sharp-edged weapon, the police said.

The accused allegedly killed his mother, father, elder brother, his wife and two children -- a son and a daughter -- they added.

The victims were identified as Amar (60), Ramsakhi (55), Arun (40), Ramdulari (35), Saurabh (7) and Sarika (2).

When asked, Commissioner of Police Sujeet Pandey said six members of a family were killed and the accused surrendered before the police.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: City Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru City have arrested two drug peddlers from Kerala and have seized banned products from their possession.

According to officials the arrested persons have been identified as Shinto Thomas (35) of Wayanad and Tajudden Talat (29) of Thiruvananthapuram.

"We have seized 4 kg 350 grams of Hashish oil, 21.5 kgs of Ganja, Rs. 9300 cash, two mobile phones, two ganja crushing tools, and 625 empty boxes and other articles from them", police said in a statement.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.
