Mangaluru: 75-yr-old man gets 3 years jail for sexually harassing 7-yr-old girl

Mangaluru, Mar 12: A 75-year-old man has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by a local court here for of sexually harassing a seven-year-old girl.

jailThe convicted is Hanumantappa (75), a resident of Meenakaliya in Baikampady. He was arrested by the Panambur police on June 15, 2014 for allegedly harassing sexually the eldest of the three children of a labour-couple who were staying in a rented accommodation of the accused.

The II Additional District and Sessions Court on Friday sentenced a 75-year-old resident of Baikampady to three years imprisonment on finding him guilty of sexually harassing a seven-year-old girl.

According to the charge-sheet, Hanumantappa went to the house when the girl's parents had gone out for work. The girl was sleeping but Hanumantappa tried to carry her on his shoulder to his house. As he was lifting the girl up, she screamed and neighbours rushed to her rescue.

As Hanumantappa ran out of the house, he was caught by the people who assaulted him. The police arrested Hanumantappa the same day for offences under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and also under the Indian Penal Code.

Special Public Prosecutor C. Venkataramanaswamy examined 15 witnesses, including the child's mother to whom the girl revealed what Hanumantappa had done.

The others who were examined included the girl's uncle who was among those who rushed to the house after the girl screamed for help.

The II Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Sarvodaya Shettigar, who is also the special judge for POCSO Act cases, sentenced Hanumantappa to three years simple imprisonment and imposed Rs. 25,000 fine after finding him guilty under Sections 7 and 8 of the POCSO Act.

The Judge sentenced Hanumantappa to one year simple imprisonment and imposed Rs. 25,000 fine on finding him guilty under Section 354 (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code. Both sentences will run concurrently, the Judge ordered.

Of the total fine amount of Rs. 50,000, the Judge ordered payment of Rs. 25,000 to the victim.

Bengaluru, Jul 24: Karnataka Government on Friday issued an order regarding the refixation of rates for RT-PCR testing and Rapid Antigen testing for private laboratories in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state induced Task Force Committee has revised the rate of RT-PCR testing to cost Rs 2,000 per test and Rapid Antigen testing for private samples to cost Rs 700 per sample.

Ceiling rate for private samples in private laboratories including screening test and confirmatory test is Rs 3,000 per test, read the order

The cost is inclusive of the price of Personal protective equipment (PPE) kit, stated the government in the order.

Karnataka has reported 5,007 new COVID-19 positive cases and 110 deaths on Friday.

The total number of cases stands at 85,870 including 52,791 active cases and 1,724 deaths, added the state Government.

Bengaluru, May 10: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said that Congress will make travel arrangements for stranded Keralites in the state in order to facilitate them to reach their homes.

"On the request made by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has appointed MLA NA Haris as in-charge coordinator to look after the Kerala citizens stranded in Karnataka," DK Shivakumar, President of Karnataka Congress said in a letter addressed to Kerala Congress.

"MLA Haris will guide and assist the Kerala citizens and make the travel arrangements for those who have obtained travel passes from concerned districts after discussing with government officials to send them to their respective places with government's approval," he added.

Shivakumar shared the contact details of MLA NA Haris and a helpline number for people to register their details.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on May 1, issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 and also allowed the movement of migrant workers, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places, by special trains, to their homes.

Newsroom, Jun 14: Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found dead in his house in Mumbai’s Bandra today, was heartbroken after the death of his former manager Disha Salian.

34-year-old actor had posted a heartfelt note after her death: “It’s such devastating news. My deepest condolences to Disha’s family and friends. May your soul rest in peace.” 

The police are considering 28-year-old Disha’s death as an accidental one and the investigation is on to find if it was a suicide. She died after falling off the 14th floor of a building in Malad, Mumbai on June 8.

It is not yet known if there is any connection between the two deaths. Sushant’s house help reportedly found him hanging inside his room on Sunday and cops are investigating the case. He was recently seen in Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore and more recently on Netflix opposite Jacqueline Fernandez in Drive.

Who is Disha Salian?

Disha Salian hails from Karnataka’s coastal district of Udupi. She was born in 1992 into a business family background. She reportedly migrated to Mumbai with her family at an early age. 

After completing her education, she worked in the Times of India Group for more than three years. She went on to become the celebrity manager at Media Vantage.

Apart from Sushant, she had great links with many popular celebrities like Bharti Singh, Alisha Panwar, and others.
