Mangaluru, Oct 23: School teacher-turned-serial killer Mohan, aka Cyanide Mohan has been convicted for the murder of another woman hailing from Dakshina Kannada in Bengaluru.

Sixth additional district and sessions judge Sayeedunnisa convicted the 56-year-old Mohan on Tuesday, and the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Thursday. With this, Mohan has been convicted in 17 cases, and trials are on in three more cases.

Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta said Mohan met the victim, an anganwadi assistant, at Balepuni in Bantwal taluk in October 2005. Mohan introduced himself to the victim as Anand, and befriended her, saying that he also belonged to the same caste as her.

On October 21, 2005, Mohan took the victim to Bengaluru, promising to marry her. She had left home informing her family that she was going to Sringeri on a tour with friends. Both of them checked into Hotel Shabari Gate near the Kempegowda Bus Stand (KBS) in Bengaluru.

Mohan had sex with the victim and the next day took her to bus stand, leaving her gold ornaments in the hotel room. Mohan asked her to take a tablet, which was laced with cyanide, making her believe that it was a contraceptive pill. She went to the toilet on the platform number 1 of the bus stand and died after consuming the tablet. In the meantime, Mohan went to the hotel room and fled with the gold ornaments of the victim, Crasta said.

An unnatural death report (UDR) was registered at the Upparpet police station in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, a missing complaint was filed by her family members at Konaje police station in Mangaluru. Statements of a witness, who was the president of the anganwadi monitoring and support committee, and the UDR by the police, helped the prosecution to prove the charges against Mohan.

The witness also succeeded in identifying Mohan in an identification parade conducted in the presence of a tahsildar in jail. The UDR had made mention of cyanide as the cause of death. The court also took statements from Dr C M Sumangala from Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. Further, the ornaments of the victims were also recovered. Though the case was initially taken up by theKonaje police, it was later handed over to the CID. On March 2010, CID Inspector Waseer Sahib filed a chargesheet against Mohan.

“The court examined 41 witnesses and 67 documents during the trial and found Mohan guilty of offences committed under IPC sections 366 (abduction), 417 (cheating), 376 (rape), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc), 392 (robbery), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence),” Crasta said.

Mohan was arrested by Bantwal Rural police in a rape and murder case on September 21, 2009. Though he was awarded the death penalty in three cases, the verdict in one case was commuted to life and another for five years’ imprisonment.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested that the cost of building and installing a new statue of Nada Prabhu Kempegowda in the Bengaluru airport should be borne by Kempegowda international airport (KIAL).

Shivakumar wrote to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and welcomed the decision of erecting a statute of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at KIAL but he also suggested that the chief minister should not spend state government's money on this.

He said that the Karnataka government has done many favours to airport authority earlier.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday launched the ruling BJP's outreach campaign in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Bengaluru.

"The CAA came into being after its amendment bill was passed in Parliament during its winter session with the support of major political parties. It is meant to give shelter and protection to Hindu minorities facing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It does not take away any rights of Indians," Yediyurappa told residents on a door-to-door campaign in the city.

Accusing the opposition Congress of misleading the people on the CAA and inciting its protesters to indulge in violence, the chief minister said the Act does not cause any problem to all sections of Indians.

"There is no question of taking away anyone's citizenship, including that of Muslims, as the Act only facilitates the return of the Hindus persecuted in the neighbouring countries in the sub-continent," he asserted.

State deputy chief minister H.C. Ashwath Narayana and party's Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha member P.C. Mohan accompanied the chief minister on his outreach programme in some residential and commercial areas of the city.

As part of the nationwide campaign in favour the CAA, the party's state unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel and the state's dozen cabinet ministers led the campaign in other cities across the southern state.

"An awareness campaign will be peacefully held daily till January 15 across the state to counter the protests against it by students and other people at the behest of the Congress and Left parties," Kateel told reporters at Mangaluru, 350km southwest of Bengaluru.

Kateel is a BJP Lok Sabha member from the state's Dakshina Kannada seat.

Besides contacting the people directly at their doorstep through the party's leaders, cadres and supporters, the BJP is reaching all sections of society through social media and by holding pro-CAA rallies in all the 30-district headquarters across the state over the next 10 days.

"About 300 leaders and cadres of the party have fanned out in cities and towns across the state to explain the provisions of the CAA to the people and clarify their doubts, as the protesters were misleading them with wrong information about it," reiterated Kateel.

The CAA came into being after the President enacted the a law to give citizenship rights to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians who have been allegedly persecuted as minorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan over the last seven decades.

"A deliberate misinformation campaign has been carried out against the CAA by vested interests, misguiding a section of college/university students, their faculty, activists and members of the minority community on its provisions so as to create unrest and trigger violence in the country," Ravikumar claimed.

The ruling party also held rallies and public meetings in major cities like Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi, Belagavi, Bellary and Kalaburagi across the state and enlightened the people on the benefits of the CAA.

"As social media is all-pervasive with greater reach and better impact, we are also reaching about one crore people of all ages through Kannada, Hindi and English script, messages and audio/video clips in the state during the fortnight campaign," added Kateel.
