Mangaluru: St Aloysius College gets prestigious UGC Research Grant

Mangaluru, Dec 5: St Aloysius College (Autonomous) has been selected under the newly started prestigious UGC-STRIDE Scheme (Component I).  Component I of the Scheme for Trans- disciplinary Research for India’s Developing Economy (STRIDE) is envisaged to augment the Research Capacity Building exercises and Human Resource Development of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). 

The College is one among 34 Colleges selected under Component I in the country (including universities) and one among the 3 Colleges selected from Karnataka. The College is expected to get a grant of Rs. 1 Crore under the scheme for a period of three years. The College has chosen Cultural Studies as the broad area of study and has the objective of identifying, promoting, documenting and popularizing the vibrant cultural diversity of Coastal Karnataka and their impact on the social, political and cultural identities of the people of the region. This will be accomplished through rigorous action research along with imparting effective training and research capacity building of the staff and students of the institution. This unique trans-disciplinary research will involve research staff and students of faculties of languages, humanities, social sciences and biological sciences of the institution.

Principal of the College, Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ and the Coordinator of STRIDE- Component I, Dr Alwyn D’Sa have expressed the long term objective and motivation for choosing the area of cultural diversity as an earnest attempt to become a catalyst in facilitating a cohesive, inclusive and sustainable development of target region by creating spaces for proactive engagement with communities by identifying, promoting and harnessing the research potential of the staff and students.

Udupi, Jul 15: Two doctors and four staff members of the Udupi District Hospital have been tested positive for coronavirus.

While one doctor is undergoing treatment at the designated covid hospital, the other one, who is said to be asymptomatic, is being treated at his residence.

After four staff members of the hospital tested covid positive, the throat swabs of their contacts including other staff of the hospital and family members were also sent for testing. 

Meanwhile, a person who was undergoing treatment in the district hospital for some other ailment also tested covid positive triggering panic among other non-covid patients.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: A delegation of Christians, led by Peter Machado, archbishop of Bengaluru, met chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday and sought an amicable solution to the issue of installing a statue of Jesus Christ atop Kapalibetta in Harobele village, Kanakapura taluk.

Yediyurappa is learnt to have assured the delegation of doing the needful and said he would take a decision after the revenue department submits its report. The department is looking into various aspects of the issue, including the sanction of 10 acres of land for the purpose.

“The meeting was cordial and the chief minister lent us a patient hearing. Our only request was to settle the issue in a way that is acceptable to all sections of society,” Machado said. Congress functionary and Kanakapura legislator DK Shivakumar had laid the foundation stone for the 114-foot statue of Christ on Kapalibetta on Christmas Day at an event organised by the Harobele Kapalibetta Development Trust, which plans to install the statue.

The issue took a political hue when BJP functionaries objected, saying the land sanctioned to the trust is part of gomala (reserved for cattle grazing) land and any religious activity there would be illegal. Revenue minister R Ashoka sought a report and department officials said they would submit it in a week’s time.

Bengaluru, May 26: The Karnataka government has decided cancel summer vacation for undergraduate and post-graduate students and universities during the 2020-21 academic year in the wake of severe academic loss due to COVID-19 lockdown.

Keeping in mind the loss of academic days due to the lockdown to contain the pandemic, the Higher Education Department has decided to go in for ‘Zero Vacation’. 

The state government decided to cancel all holidays particularly the summer holidays after holding a series of meetings with the Vice Chancellors and other academicians from various parts of the state.

The decision was also communicated during the review meeting of the Higher Education Department held by CM Yediyurappa on Tuesday in Bengaluru.
