Mangaluru student bags prestigious travel fellowship from INTBAU, London

Mangaluru, Jul 7: Sanketh P Bharathish, fifth year student of city-based Srinivas Institute of Technology, is the first scholarship recipient of International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism (INTBAU) scholarship.

This year INTBAU launched the biennial travel scholarship to anchorage the next generation of researchers and practitioners of traditional architecture and to support research of clear value on 31st May 2018.

Applications were invited from full time architecture students across the globe. The panel of judges included Lauren Banks, INTBAU programme coordinator, Jeremy Cross of Prince Foundation International Network Manager, George Saumarez Smith of ADAM Architects, Ross Sharpe of Yiangou Architects and other INTBAU chapter members from USA and London confirmed Sanketh's proposal on 2nd June after the interview by its interest and strong relevance to the World Congress agenda which will be on 27th and 28th of November in London.

He will be receiving a grant of 2000£ for his proposal on proportional relationship of traditional architecture and it's adaptation to the modern practice.

Sanketh had worked research projects including heritage documentation under Dr.Shaila Bantanur of srinivas Institute of technology. He was also the part of the winning team of Rhichard H Driehaus international competition under the team headed by Anne Fairfax of "Fairfax and Sammons architects", USA.

Expat from Udupi passes away in Kuwait due to covid-19

Udupi, July 17: An Indian expatriate from coastal Karnataka who was working in Kuwait passed away in a hospital in the oil-rich country reportedly due to covid-19.

Sheikh Mohammed Syed (54) was a native of Kharvi in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district. He is survived by his mother, wife and three daughters.

An ex athletic champion from Bhandarkars' Arts & Science College, he was a well-known Volleyball and Kabaddi player in Kundapur. He was associated with many sports associations in Udupi.

An employee of KRH firm, he was hospitalized in Kuwait three weeks ago due to ill health. He was tested positive for covid-19.

He breathed his last yesterday without responding to any treatment. Final rites were held in Kuwait.

Prior to migrating to Kuwait, he had worked in United Arab Emirates for several years. A sports enthusiast, he had trained many athletes in Udupi.

Muslim Committee drops Jan 4 anti-CAA protest plan as cops refuse permission

Mangaluru, Jan 2: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has dropped its plan to stage a massive protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens on January 4 at Mangaluru’s Nehru Maidan.

Addressing a press conference here today, committee chief K S Mohammed Masood made this announcement.

“All the 28 organisations that had decided to stage protest under the leadership of the Muslim Central Committee, have unanimously agreed to temporarily cancel the protest plan after the city police refused permission for the event,” he said.

Mr Masood requested the people, especially the youth, not to lose patience. “No one should head to Nehru Maidan on January 4 as Muslim leaders have unanimously decided to cancel the protest,” he urged.

S M Rasheed Haji, Y Abdulla Kunhi, Umar UH, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Khasim H K, Mansoor Ahmed Azad and Asif Deals were present in the press meet.

Secondly, a few days back I wanted to contact Muslim central committee office to confirm if the protest Wil be there. I googled for the no, but the no. did not exist. Does that mean the Muslim central committee does not have an office or telephone no????

This only shows how organised we are.

Requesting Muslim central committee to get their house in order. Get more professional. Also consult people to utilise various platform to responsibly collect funds from so many ordinary bearys who want to donate money, but don't know whom to send it to.

We need an action committee to handle such situations. It must consist a battery of lawyers to fight the cases filed by the police.

If our leaders are old, they need to groom new leaders into the committee.

Moreover, it is important to question these so called leaders about their fecilitation program conducted for making kateel wen he won the election. Wat was the purpose of such fecilitation. Becoz I don't think he gives a damn when our community suffered. I question, whether all this is done in our name only to gain your contact and flourish ur business???

Karnataka passes law allowing non-farmers to buy farmland to grow food crops

Bengaluru, Jul 14: The Karnataka government on Tuesday made changes to the Land Reforms Act 1961 through an ordinance to allow non-agriculturists to buy and own farmland for farming.

“The Land Reforms Act has been amended through an ordinance and notified after Governor Vajubhai R Vala gave his assent to it on Monday night,” a Revenue Department official told media persons.

It now permits non-farmers to buy farmland and grow food crops. But they can’t use it for other activities.

“Sections 79 A, B and C of the Act have been repealed, paving way for bona fide citizens to invest in farmland and take to farming as a hobby, passion or additional occupation, which is rewarding,” the official said.

The amended Act will enable the state to attract investment in the farm sector and boost food output. The farm sector’s contribution to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) has been less than the manufacturing and services sectors over the last two decades.

Criticism by farmers, the Congress and the JD(S) since the cabinet approved changes on June 11 forced the state government to retain section 80 of the Act, with an amendment, to prevent sale of dam water irrigated farmland.

“The ordinance has also added a new section (80A), which says relaxations under the Act will not apply to land given to farmers under the Karnataka SC and ST (Scheduled Caste and Tribe) Act 1978,” the official said.

The changes permit mortgage of farmland only to the state-run institutions, firms and cooperative societies specified in the Act. The ordinance also makes legal cases pending in courts against the sections amended redundant as the new Act addresses the concerns raised in them.

“Besides generating substantial revenue for the state government, the Act will now allow farmers who find the occupation non-remunerative and risky due to droughts/floods and labour shortage to sell their surplus land to urban buyers,” the official said.

Ruling BJP Rajya Sabha member KC Ramamurthy from Bengaluru said the amended Act would allow any citizen to buy farmland.

“Though hundreds of people petitioned successive governments for the past 45 years to abolish the ‘draconian’ sections, they were ignored. I compliment Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Revenue Minister R Ashoka for the decision to allow everyone to buy farmland irrespective of their occupation or profession,” Ramamurthy told media persons.
