Many VCs in state have paid bribe to get their posts: HDK

August 20, 2016

Bengaluru, Aug 20: JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy on Friday charged that vice chancellors of many universities had paid bribe for their appointments in the state.

“Many vice chancellors have made payments for their appointments. They would have borrowed money from somewhere to make the payment. And now, after the appointment, they are trying to recover the money. Hence, scams are cropping up in universities,” he told reporters.

He, however, did not divulge names of vice chancellors who he claimed paid bribe. To a question on who had taken the bribe, he sarcastically said, “Details of the payments might be available with Raj Bhavan.”

He took serious exception to Higher Education Minister Basavraj Rayareddi for terming some vice chancellors dacoits. “Being the Higher Education Minister, Rayareddi will have access to all information. Why isn't he taking action against those dacoits?” he asked. He also criticised Health Minister K R Ramesh Kumar for lecturing on morals in public life and doing nothing to bring in the changes.

He criticised the government for delay in recommending the police officers for promotion to IPS cadre. About 40 IPS posts have been vacant in Karnataka since March this year. But the government has not recommended any name to the Centre for promotions.

“Maybe, the government is averse to promoting Kannada-speaking officers to IPS cadre. It wants only officers from north India to occupy IPS posts so that they can mercilessly beat up locals,” he said, and added that Kempaiah, the advisor to the home minister, would be the right person to explain why the government is dillydallying on recommending the names.

Help denied to SC student'

H?D?Kumaraswamy charged that Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya refused to help a meritorious scheduled caste student pay the admission fee for his medical course. Shivanand Sonemane had secured the 1,345th rank in the common entrance test and was given a seat at Bangalore Medical College. But he was unable to pay the fees. When the student approached Anjaneya recently seeking financial assistance, the minister did not oblige him, he said.

He also refused to accept the request letter that was written in Kannada. Instead, he asked him to submit the letter in English. “The government claims to be a champion of SC, ST and backward classes, but poor students belonging to these communities are not getting help,” the JD(S) leader charged and added that he will help the student if the government fails in its responsibility.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The COVID-19 count in Karnataka went up by 10 on Wednesday, reaching 51. The 10 new positives included two girls aged seven and nine who contracted the infection from their father.

The 34-year-old man had returned from Amsterdam on March 19 and tested positive as the 17th confirmed case in Karnataka.

Though his family were kept in isolation and under quarantine in their house, the children developed a cold. They were confirmed for COVID-19 infection while their mother is still negative.

The government remained tightlipped over whether or not a 70-year-old woman from Gouribidanuru who was put under house quarantine and died on Wednesday morning, tested positive for COVID-19. Government officials would neither confirm nor deny anything on the results of tests on the woman.

This evening’s bulletin issued by the Karnataka health department continued to indicate the strong correlation of coronavirus infection and foreign travel.

Among the positive cases identified today were

A 63-year-old Bengaluru man and his 59-year-old wife, with a history of travel to Brazil and Argentina.
Two 26-year-old men with a history of travel to Spain and arrived back in Bengaluru via Dubai.
Two others, a 63-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband, had a history of travel to Athens and London.
A 34-year-old man, a resident of Udupi, who returned from Dubai
A 37-year old woman, a resident of Chitradurga, with a history of travel to Guyana and arrived back in Bengaluru via Delhi
Speaking to the media, medical education minister K Sudhakar said health officials were apprehensive the positives may go up tonight.

Of the corona positive cases detected in Karnataka so far, three have been discharged after quarantine, and 47 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals in a stable condition. There has been one fatality.

As per a recommendation by the high-level health committee, the government has decided to convert the Bowring Hospital into a coronavirus treatment hospital facility along with the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Chest Diseases and Victoria Hospital.

“The number of positive cases are growing at an alarming rate and the government needs more treatment facilities. The government is for burning of COVID-19 death cases. However, due to some religious practices, it has been decided they would be buried in 8 ft deep pits,'' Dr Sudhakar said.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Wednesday urged Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes in urban local and rural panchayats for a period of one year as citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "Citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the Corona Pandemic. It's imperative on the government to ease the financial burden on citizens. I urge CM B.S. Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes, in urban local bodies and rural panchayats, for a period of one year on humanitarian grounds."
In yet another demand, Shivakumar on Tuesday said the state government should give details of the amount it spent on migrants and labourers during the coronavirus crisis if it is transparent.

"The image of Karnataka has come to a very rotten position. We all know that Karnataka has failed in sorting out the problem. Let them (the state government) tell what has been the amount spent on the labour, migrants and food kits on the health department. We want an account (of the expenditure) if they are so transparent," Shivakumar said.

He said the state government should have approached the hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients and if any private hospital refused, a message should have been given that the government would take it over.

He also accused the state government of corruption.
