Materials used for KMB to build homes for flood affected

Kochi, Nov 10: The materials used for the upcoming Kochi-Muziris Biennale Pavilion would be subsequently utilised to construct houses for the flood-affected in Kerala, organisers of contemporary art festival said.

At least a dozen homes of 600 square feet each would be built next summer from the structure that is currently being constructed at Cabral Yard, Fort Kochi in time for the Biennale which starts on December 12, Bose Krishnamachari, founder-president of Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), said.

The Foundation felt an urgent need to contribute to relief and aid efforts after the August deluge and landslides that ravaged the state, the KBF said in a release.

"This will be one way of our joining the state government's 'Rebuilding Kerala' mission," Krishnamachari said.

The KBF has already announced that a major art auction of the Foundation would be organised for the same purpose.

Select paintings, sculptures and installations of more than 40 artists in India and abroad would go under the hammer at the January 18, 2019 event in Kochi as part of the Foundation's ARK (Art Rises for Kerala) initiative in partnership with SaffronArt, it said.

This year's Biennale curator Anita Dube said the monsoon calamity in Kerala had prompted her to explore ways in which KMB could respond to the massive loss of lives and livelihood.

Given the severity of the catastrophe, Dube offered the chance for participating artists to alter their work in response to the tragedy.

"Some artists were affected by news of the event and changed their ideas," she said, emphasising that resources which are currently making a major public structure for the Biennale will be used after the event to construct houses for the flood-affected.

The fourth edition of the KMB is curated by Anita Dube and runs from December 12 2018 to March 29 2019.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that BJP is trying to destabilise the Congress government in Rajasthan.

"It is the duty of the Governor to act according to the decision of the state cabinet. But he is acting like a central government puppet," he said at a protest organised here by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

He said the Congress is protesting across the country to save democracy and save the constitution.

"We are not fighting through violence. We are protesting peacefully. The Constitution has given the right to protest in a democratic system," he said.

He accused the BJP of "being disrespectful" to the Constitution.

"Governments must walk within the framework of the Constitution. The Constitution gives everyone rights and duties. BJP destabilises elected governments and buys our legislators by horse-trading by spending crores of money. The same thing happened in Karnataka as well," he alleged.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 12: In the wake of COVID-19 outbreak, Internet service providers in Kerala have agreed to step up the network capacity by 30 to 40 per cent of the present capacity to meet the demand, especially in view of the spurt in work-at-home mode.

"The decision was made at a meeting of representatives of various telecom service providers in Kerala circle and officials of the Telecommunication Department convened by the Secretary, Electronics and IT, following a direction by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to look into the issue," said a press release by the IT Department.

The decision will be beneficial for those working in IT institutions. The government has come out with a set of suggestions to avoid social gatherings at public places in view of coronavirus spread. Telecom service providers have assured the government that they are well equipped to face the current situation.

The major part of Internet consumption in Kerala is made available through local servers. Moreover, global Internet traffic is very low as compared to the overall consumption. So, increasing the capacity won't be difficult, service providers informed.

"Complaints regarding the low availability of the Internet due to the spurt in consumption of the Internet can be made to the service providers to their complaint redressal number or inform state government call centre (155300). But complaints regarding the insufficiency in the current network infrastructure should be strictly avoided," said the release.

The IT Department will also demand daily reports from various telecom service providers. By analysing these reports, steps for remedies will be taken after bringing the sudden increase in consumption to the service providers.

Washington D.C., Jan 20: An American bride asked for money from her invitees so that they can be on the 'exclusive guest list'.

Weddings can be surely expensive. But is it feasible for one to charge the guests to make up for the expenses?

According to Fox News, that is exactly what happened in a recent American wedding. A 19-year-old shared on Reddit that her cousin was getting married on Sunday and announced that she would charge 50 dollars to those who wanted to attend her wedding.

"She said that they can Venmo her money so there won't be no [sic] problems and everyone who paid will be added onto the 'exclusive guest list' which basically means you won't have to wait in line while other guests pay," wrote the user named DaintySheep.

While she refused to pay for entry into her cousin's wedding the bride-to-be contacted the elders in the family which ended up in an embarrassing situation.

"She wanted to get the money she spent on her special day back. I told her I wouldn't be able to come because this was outrageous and that I wish her well on her special day. She contacted my aunt and my aunt called me cheap and rude. My parents offered to pay for my entry, but I refused," continued the disheartened girl.

While in almost every nook and cranny of the world gifting the bride-groom with money is a tradition, asking for money from friends and family to replenish the money spent on a wedding is can be said to be a rare scenario.
