Mangalore, March 7: The MCC Mayoral elections which saw the majority BJP's candidate being disqualified resulting in a Congress win, were conducted against the norms of election laws, alleged Monappa Bhandary, Spokesperson, DK District BJP.

Addressing media persons at a press meet held at the party office in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr. Bhandary accused Ms. M V Jayanthi, the returning officer who conducted the electoral proceedings earlier today, of not following the right procedure and laws. “She has not followed the law and gone about her own wish. She has succumbed to outside pressure and acted irresponsibly. Nowhere does the law say that the returning officer should not accept a candidate's caste certificate if it is submitted at the time of scrutiny”, he said.

Arguing that the nomination format that was used itself was “illegal”, Mr. Bhandary said that the party had not committed any blunder and it was the returning officer who was at fault.

Mr. Bhandary said that in 2005, in connection with a presidential election for a local institution, local officers had sought a response from the Election Commission whether caste certificate could be accepted at the time of scrutiny, to which the Commission had responded in the affirmative.

To a query from media persons as to why the BJP had taken so long to file its nomination caste certificate, Mr. Bhandary said “What's the big deal if we submitted it at the time of scrutiny? Even in Lok Sabha elections, there have been instances in the past where certificates have been submitted at the time of scrutiny.” He also stated that the BJP did not push forward a dummy candidate as they were confident of the nominated candidate seeing it through. “Our documents were up to date. Who had thought that she (returning officer) would reject the nomination?” he said.

When asked as to why the party had filed the nomination in the first place if it knew that the format itself was illegal, Mr. Bhandary said that only after the disqualification did the BJP look for loopholes in the nomination process and found out the 'illegality' of the format.

Mr. Bhandary said that the party would decide its future course of action in a day or two after consultation with party elders.

Ms. Gulzar Banu of Congress was elected Mayor of Mangalore after BJP's candidate Roopa D Bangera's nomination was cancelled by the returning officer earlier in the day.

Chennai, July 27: Multi-lingual actress Vijayalakshmi, who attempted suicide yesterday, alleging harassment and bullying by followers of Naam Thamizhar party leader Seeman and Panankattu Padai’s Hari Nadar, is recuperating at a hospital in Chennai.

Vijayalakshmi is known for films like Friends and Boss Engira Baskaran. She recently made headlines for speaking against Seeman and the torture she was allegedly facing from the actor-turned-politician and his party.

In the video which was uploaded on Sunday evening, Vijayalakshmi said, “This is my last video and I have been in tremendous stress in the last four months because of Seeman and his partymen. I tried my level best to survive all these days because of my mother and sister, but I have been humiliated in the media by Harinadar recently.”

She added, “I would like to tell fans who are watching the video just because I was born in Karnataka, Seeman has tortured me a lot. As a woman, I have put up with it to my highest capabilities. I won’t be able handle the pressure anymore. I am from the Pillai community, the same community LTTE leader Prabhakaran is part of. Prabhakaran is the only reason Seeman is who he is today, but now he has been harassing me on social media continuously. You slut shamed me to make me feel the pain and it is up to me to decide on what to do after facing such insults from you. I request my fans not to let Seeman get away from this case. He should never get anticipatory bail. My death should be a big eye-opener to everyone. I don’t want to be a slave to anybody.”

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Congress leaders on Monday rode a bicycle from his residence to Minsk Square to protest against the hike in fuel prices.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar was also seen riding a bicycle along with other members of the Congress party to Minsk Square where the party staged the protest.

During the protest, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with party leaders carried a bike on their shoulders.

"We are carrying out our duty today. At the time of the UPA government's rule, when there was any hike in fuel prices, several BJP leaders had made bold statements. It is ironic that today, at the time of this COVID-19 pandemic, even despite the price of barrels falling, they have increased fuel prices," said Shivakumar.

"In Delhi, diesel prices have exceeded petrol prices. We must protest against this. The DCP can file whatever case he wants to. Despite several cases against us, we have never been shaken up. They are inconveniencing people and causing the people to burn in hell. These people must be protected," he added.

With the hike in fuel prices, the petrol prices stand at Rs 83.04/litre (increase by Rs 0.05), and the diesel prices stand at Rs 76.58/litre (increase by Rs 0.13) in Bengaluru, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Congress has termed the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless", and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the people.
