MERS kills expat woman; teachers monitoring pupils

MERS_kills_expatRiyadh, Apr 19: The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus has claimed the life of a 55-year-old expatriate woman in Riyadh, bringing the death toll to 73 nationwide, a Ministry of Health official reported on Friday.
The official said the woman was part of a group of six people with chronic diseases who had become infected, including three Saudi men aged 32, 78 and 81, and two expatriates aged 27 and 52. They are undergoing treatment in the intensive care units of government hospitals here, the official said.
A total of 218 people have been infected with the virus since September 2012, with 90 of these cases in Riyadh.
Meanwhile, schools here are taking precautions against the virus.
The female principal of one school with mostly Arab-speaking students, said that teachers have been monitoring students. She said children suspected to have the virus are isolated until a doctor arrives. She has instructed all teachers to wear facemasks while they teach.

Karim Reza, principal of the Bangladesh International School-English Section said that teachers would provide further information to children on the virus on Sunday. The school has already held awareness programs.
The chairman of an international school in Riyadh, who wished to remain anonymous, told Arab News that schools are waiting for instructions from the Ministry of Education on what action to take.
Some visitors and security guards at the international conference and exhibition on higher education being held at the Riyadh convention center, were wearing facemasks on Friday.
A team of inspectors from the World Health Organization arrives in the Kingdom on April 28 to check on the status of the outbreak.
A Saudi researcher said on Thursday that camels are passing on the virus to humans.

Saudi Arabia has initiated refund of work visa fee to foreigners unable to travel to the Kingdom due to the suspension of international flights in the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic.

Several work visas were cancelled, following which the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced the refund. The cancellation and refunding of the stamped visas will be considered effective from the date of issuance of the royal decree on March 18, reported Saudi Gazette.

As a precautionary measure to curb the spread of coronavirus, the Kingdom suspended all international flight. The ministry of health in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday announced 1,325 new Covid-19 coronavirus cases and 169 recoveries. With this, the total number of cases in the Kingdom now stands at 21,402, while recoveries stand at 2,953, as on Wednesday reported KT.

Dubai, Mar 5: A 16-year-old Indian girl here has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed infection cases in the UAE to 28, according to media reports.

Health officials here confirmed on Wednesday that a new coronavirus case was detected in the girl who attended an Indian school in Dubai, Al-Arabiya website reported.

The girl tested positive for the COVID-19 after she contracted the infection from her father who travelled overseas, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) was quoted as saying by the report.

The Indian High School in Dubai will be closed from Thursday as a precautionary measure, the Gulf News reported.

"As a precautionary measure, Indian High School Group of schools is closed from Thursday, March 5. Detailed circular about exams will be mailed. Your well-being is important. Take care," the report said.

The father developed symptoms of the virus five days after returning to Dubai. Both the student and family members have been quarantined in hospital and are stable and recovering well. All other family members have also been quarantined, the Khaleej Times reported.

"Within the framework of comprehensive preventive measures against the spread of coronavirus, the DHA is conducting tests and monitoring the students, staff and workers of the school that may have interacted with the coronavirus patient," the DHA was quoted as saying by the Gulf News.

Dubai, May 10: Kuwait will enact a "total curfew" from 4pm (1300 GMT) on Sunday through to May 30 to help to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the Information Ministry said on Twitter on Friday.

Further details of the curfew will be announced soon, it said.

Kuwait on April 20 expanded a nationwide curfew to 16 hours a day, from 4pm to 8am, and extended a suspension of work in the public sector, including government ministries, until May 31.

On Friday the Gulf state announced 641 new coronavirus cases and three deaths, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 7,208, with 47 deaths.
