Panaji, Nov 21: Bollywood actor Poonam Dhillon on Wednesday voiced support for the #MeToo movement but cautioned against making generalisations and branding the entire film industry as "bad".

Dhillon, while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of a multi-media exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi here, also said that to a great extent it "depends on how you conduct yourself".

Asked about Preity Zinta's remarks that Bollywood is "very safe" for women, Dhillon said she would not like to comment on Preity's statement as she has not read it.

However, talking about the #MeToo movement rocking the film industry she said: "We cannot generalise anything in life. We cannot say media people are like this, film people are like this, or doctors are like this."

General black and white statements cannot be made because every person is responsible for his own behaviour, Dhillon said.

"You cannot say the whole industry is bad. There are bad people, but there are many good people as well. To a great extent, it also depends how you conduct yourself," the 56-year-old actor said.

Dhillon said that she feels that the #MeToo movement is a "good thing" because it makes people realise that they cannot abuse their authority and abuse people working under them.

Everyone should respect their work, she said.

"This (the #MeToo movement) may be a warning to the people who may have advertently or inadvertently misused their authority. Do not do it," she said.

She also lauded the 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), saying it is growing year by year.

The #MeToo movement, which began in Hollywood a year ago, gained momentum in India recently with women calling out comedians, journalists, authors, actors and filmmakers, resulting in the naming of people like M J Akbar, Nana Patekar, Alok Nath, Sajid Khan, Vikas Bahl and Rajat Kapoor.

Film director Subhash Ghai, whose name also cropped up in the list after two women accused him of sexual harassment, was also present at the inauguration. Ghai has categorically denied the charges.

Ghai, a regular at the Goa film bonanza, hailed the opening ceremony calling it "very different" from the previous editions.

The opening ceremony on Tuesday had filmmaker Karan Johar bringing his sassy chat show host avatar as he sat down for a conversation with Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Bollywood star Akshay Kumar.

Asked about the opening ceremony on the sidelines of the inauguration of a multi-media exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi, Ghai told reporters: "I will say what I saw yesterday, was very different from the previous functions."

He said that he was happy that tradition was broken and it was not a usual opening with long speeches.

"There was an interaction with a star, with a sportsman, there was song, there was dance, and it was over. People come here to see best of the films. I, as a student, also come to see films," he said.

"In 2004, I had come with Mr (Manohar) Parrikar when the design was made of how to get it to Goa. I was one of the advisory committee members. I come every year, I see that there is progress every year," he added.

Mumbai, May 17: TV actor Manmeet Grewal, who worked on shows like "Aadat Se Majboor" and "Kuldeepak", committed suicide after struggling with dwindling finances amid lockdown, family friend-producer Manjit Singh Rajput said.

Grewal, who was originally from Punjab, hanged himself on Friday night at his Kharghar residence here where he lived with his wife. He was 32.

Rajput, who had known Grewal for nearly seven years, said the actor was facing "financial crisis" and wasn't able to earn due to the lockdown.

"He was going through a major financial issue and he was also in depression. The added pressure of not being able to repay loans amid this (no work phase) got to him. His wife is completely shocked and devastated," Rajput told PTI.

The producer said last rites of the actor were performed on Saturday.

Grewal was working on projects like a webseries and some commercials, which were put on hold due to the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Tu bhul gaya woh time jab tu mere ghar pe aake… ‘bhai bhai meri album kar do. Bhai 'Deewana' kar do. Bhai, Smita Thackeray se milwa do, Bal Thackeray se milwa do. Abu Salem se bacha lo. Abu Salem galiyaan de raha hai'... yaad hai na? Yaad hai ki nahi yeh sab cheezein? Main tujhe keh raha hoon mere muh mat lagna ab tu bas. (Do you remember the time when you used to come to my home requesting me… ‘brother record an album for me. Brother, record Deewana for me. Brother, introduce me to Smita Thackeray and Bal Thackeray. Save me from Abu Salem. Abu Salem is abusing me'… do you remember? Don't mess with me, I am warning you)."

"Marina Cover yaad hai na? Woh kyon boli, woh kyon back out kiya yeh mujhe nahi pata. Media ko pata hai mafia kis tarah function karta hai. Uska video mere paas padha hai. Ab agar tune mere se panga liya, toh woh video main apni YouTube channel mein dal dunga. Samjha? Mere mooh mat lagna (Do you remember Marina Cover? I don't know no why they spoke and why they backed out, but media knows how the mafia functions. I still have that video with me. Now if you mess with me, I will upload that video on my YouTube channel. So don't mess with me)."

In a recent video posted on Instagram, Sonu Nigam had appealed to music companies (without taking names) to be a little kind towards newcomer artistes, saying otherwise more people will commit suicide. He had mentioned in his previous video that currently two companies rule the music industry. He had also claimed falling prey to power play by a Bollywood actor.
