Mistaken identity: Indian mission to help visitor

TroubleDubai, April 4: Freedom is in sight for Indian fisherman Mathew Joseph who has been held in the UAE for nearly three months in an unusual case of mistaken identity. The Indian mission here has promised to intervene in his case after verifying that he is not the wanted man Mathew Joseph with whom the former had bizarre likeness in many things.


After Khaleej Times published his plight on Monday, the Indian Consulate in Dubai, which had earlier verified the fisherman’s passport as genuine, secured the passport copy of the wanted man, who had worked as a driver in Dubai, through this newspaper.


On Tuesday, the Consulate informed that the passport of the driver, which was issued by itself in 2004, was also genuine. “From the official records, both the passports (of the same name) were found to be genuine,” the Consulate said in a written statement to KT. “The issue will be taken up by the Consulate with the local authorities concerned,” it added.Also, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, who was in Dubai on Tuesday, said he would instruct the Indian mission to pay the fines that Joseph would face for overstay.


On hearing the glad news, Joseph said: “I don’t know how to thank Khaleej Times for this... I wish the Consulate had done the same in January when we had approached it for help.”


The father of three schoolgoing girls said not even Dh1 billion could cure the trauma that he and his family had gone through.


Joseph, 47, was held by officials at the Sharjah International Airport on January 12 when he landed in the UAE for the first time with his brother-in-law George Cyril. He was arrested because of the close similarities he had in his full name, parents’ names, dates of birth, signatures and even in looks with that of his fellow citizen who had fled the UAE in 2010 without paying Dh14, 000 in credit card dues.


Ever since he secured bail after three days by keeping Cyril’s passport as a guarantee, Joseph had been struggling to establish that he is not the one who cheated the bank in Dubai.

Dubai, Apr 12: Saudi Arabia reported 429 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4462, the Ministry of Health announced on Sunday.

The ministry also confirmed 7 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 59.

According to the ministry of health the number of recoveries are 41 cases, making total of recoveries 761.

Ministry also said that 40,000 have been quarantined since the beginning of the epidemic, and only 7,000 remain in quarantine, including those who recently returned from abroad.

Extension of curfew

Early on Sunday, King Salman approved the extension of curfew until further notice due to current rates of coronavirus spread, the official news agency SPA announced.

Earlier last week, Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar.

Authorities had already sealed off the holy cities of Makkah and Medina along with Riyadh and Jeddah, barring people from entering and exiting as well as prohibiting movement between all provinces.

Total lockdown on Medina neighbourhoods

The Ministry of Interior also announced a total lockdown on five neighbourhoods in Medina on thursday until further notice. The neighborhoods include Al Sherbat; Bani Dhafar; Qurban, Al Jumuah; and parts of Al Iskan district and Bani Khudrah. No one is allowed to enter or exit these areas.

An official source from the ministry highlighted that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development will provide residents of these neighbourhoods with food baskets and will follow up on their needs while the ministry of health will provide them with necessary medications.

Saudi Arabia, which has reported the highest number of infections in the Gulf, is making every possible effort to limit the spread of the disease at home.

Baghdad, Jan 4: At least five people were killed on Saturday by an airstrike on a vehicle convoy of Iraq's Shia Popular Mobilization Forces in northern Baghdad, a source in security forces told Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, the source told Sputnik about a powerful explosion in Baghdad's northern district of Taji.

"A vehicle convoy of the Popular Mobilization Forces has been attacked. According to preliminary data, five people have died. Their names have not been clarified so far," the source said.

On Friday, several senior members of the Popular Mobilization Forces, as well as commander of the elite Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Qasem Soleimani, were killed by a US drone attack near the Baghdad International Airport.

Sharjah, Aug 3: A 24-year-old Indian engineer has fallen to death from the sixth floor of a residential building on Eid al-Adha in the UAE's Sharjah, a media report said on Monday. 

The electrical engineer, identified with his single name Sumesh, hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala.

He lived in a building in Al Dhaid in Sharjah, from where he fell to death on Friday, the report said, adding that he was apparently talking over the phone and threw it down minutes before the incident.

Sumesh, who came to the UAE a year ago, worked as a designer in Sharjah's Muwaileh area. His roommates said that he had some "personal issues" that had been "bothering him for some time", according to the report.

"It was Eid al-Adha and our cook had made biryani for us. We were all cracking jokes and having a good time. In fact, even Cuckoo (Sumesh) was also laughing with us. He seemed happy. Nobody had anticipated this. I did sense a few times that something was troubling him and I even asked him about it, but he brushed it off," the report quoted his roommate Dileep Kumar as saying.

Shans KF, another roommate, said Sumesh was to travel to India for his annual leave but could not because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The police have launched an investigation and moved the body to the forensic lab for an autopsy.
