New rules for divorce, custody to take effect on Feb. 26

Divorce_rule Jeddah, Jan 6: New personal status regulations for divorce, custody and alimony cases will come into effect Feb. 26, Al-Watan daily reported Saturday quoting Ministry of Justice sources.

The regulations will be enforced by all courts in the Kingdom and will help grant families more security and independence, sources said, adding that they will also reduce the negative effects of divorce on children.

In the new regulations, a husband who refuses to pay alimony to his divorced wife for three months will be ordered by the court to pay it.

If he still refuses to pay it, the judge will order that it be deducted from his salary. The regulations will organize child visits for divorced parents and stipulate new mechanisms for alimony.

The regulations will not force a woman to return to her husband’s house even if the court orders her to do so under the provision of Bayt Al-Taah (obedience to husband).

The provision allows a husband to file a case against his estranged wife in the court. The husband, whose wife does not want to return home, can under this provision request the judge to order her to return and live with him.

Under the new regulations, women will not be required to return to their husbands’ houses if they do not want to. These regulations seek to grant women more rights.

Meanwhile, Al-Watan obtained a copy of an official report showing the number of divorce, marriage annulment and similar cases that the general courts around the Kingdom looked into over the past 24 days of this Hijri month.

Riyadh General Court reviewed 14 divorce cases, 102 marriage annulment cases, 28 child visit cases, 91 custody cases, 93 alimony cases, and 36 Bayt Al-Taah cases.

Makkah General Court looked into 12 divorce cases, 66 marriage annulment cases, 11 child visit cases, 33 custody cases, 30 alimony cases, and 25 Bayt Al-Taah cases.

Jeddah General Court looked into 20 divorce cases, 91 marriage annulment cases, 41 child visit cases, 47 custody cases, 76 alimony cases, and 40 Bayt Al-Taah cases.

Dammam General Court looked into six divorce cases, 16 marriage annulment cases, four child visit cases, nine custody cases, 13 alimony cases, and nine Bayt Al-Taah cases.

Taif General Court looked into six divorce cases, 17 marriage annulment cases, three child visit cases, six custody cases, 14 alimony cases, and five Bayt Al-Taah cases.

Dubai, May 22: A 43-year-old Indian businessman won USD one million (approximately Rs 7.59 crore) in the Dubai Duty Free draw.

Rajan Kurian, who owns a construction business in Kerala, had bought the ticket online.

Mr Kurian said he was grateful for the win, considering the gloomy circumstances prevailing in the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I will set aside a good part of my win to help the needy. I feel grateful with the win but I need to share it with people who need it," he said.

Mr Kurian said some of the money will go into growing his business.

"The last few months have been tough with the COVID-19 situation. My business has come to a standstill. This money will be put to good use," he said.

An Indian expat also won a BMW motorbike in the lucky draw held on Wednesday.

A longtime resident of Dubai for 30 years now, 57-year-old Syed Hydrose Abdulla, who works as a public relations officer in a beverages company, had also bought the ticket online.

Kuwait allows international travel from Aug 1; residents from these countries excluded

Kuwait will allow citizens and residents to travel to and from the country, starting August 1, the government communication center tweeted on early Thursday, citing a cabinet decision.

The decision excludes residents coming from Bangladesh, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Nepal.

Last month, Kuwait announced it would partially resume commercial flights from August, but does not expect to reach full capacity until a year later, as its aviation sector gradually recovers from a suspension sparked by the Covid-19 crisis.

Killing of Soleimani shows US' ignorance and arrogance: Iranian FM Zarif

Asia, Jan 15: Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Wednesday said that killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani showed the ignorance and arrogance of the United States and asserted that Washington looks at things from their perspective and not keeping the interests of the region in mind."The US looks at things from their perspective, not from the perspective of this region. The killing of Qassem Soleimani shows ignorance and arrogance. 430 Indian cities saw protests against killing of Soleimani," Zarif said at an event.

Hitting out at US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Zarif said that they were the only ones, along with the Islamic State (ISIS) who celebrated the death of Soleimani.

"Who is celebrating Soleimani's killing? President Trump, Pompeo and Daesh (Arabic name of ISIS). You wonder about strange bedfellows?" he said.

Tensions between the US and Iran soared dramatically earlier this month after Washington launched airstrikes at Baghdad International Airport, which killed Soleimani. Tehran retaliated by firing a volley of ballistic missiles at two military bases of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, leading to a strife in the region.

However, Zarif regretted the shooting down of the Ukrainian airline and said it happened because of "tension".

"Nine million people were out in the streets of Iran commemorating Soleimani. You cannot bring out so many people to protest. The shooting down of a plane was a mistake. 180 families are mourning the loss of their dear ones. It happened because of tension," he said.

Asked whether there a chance of a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis, Zarif ruled out negotiating with the US.

"Iran is interested in diplomacy. We are not interested in negotiating with the US. US did not keep its commitments under nuclear deal. We had a US deal and the US broke it. If we have a Trump deal, how long will it last?" he said.
