Saudi firms get Oct 1 deadline for wage protection scheme

Riyadh, Jul 25: A wage protection program will become mandatory on Oct. 1 for companies employing 3,000 or more workers, according to the Labor Ministry.

Saudi and foreign private schools need to abide by the new rule irrespective of the number of employees on their payroll, said a senior official.

The companies and schools must submit complete details of wages paid through banks to the ministry via its website (emol.gov.sa), said Deputy Labor Minister Abdullah Abuthnain.

wage“The program aims at ensuring that all Saudi and expat workers at private firms received their salaries as per their contracts.”

The ministry will compare the wage payment list submitted by companies with the data they already have, said the official.

“The move aims to streamline the Kingdom’s labor market, removing discrepancies and creating a secure and stable atmosphere for workers,” he said.

“This will help reduce labor issues and increase workers’ productivity. It will also help us uncover fake firms, fight cover-up businesses and get rid of excess labor in the market,” he said.

Speaking about violators of mid-day work ban during summer from noon to 3 p.m., he said such firms would be fined not less than SR3,000 and not more than SR10,000.

He said the firm could also face the threat of permanent shutdown or a 30-day closure, depending on the extent of the violation.

There was cautious optimism among citizens and expats about the new wage protection program.

Ziyad Al-Rahmah, a member of the National Committee for International Schools at the Council of Saudi Chambers, said the program might place extra burden on private firms.

P. K. Ibrahim, assistant manager, trade finance center at Riyad Bank’s corporate office in the Western Region, said the payment of salaries through banks would help both companies and workers as it would enable them to get bank loans easily.

He said banks would be obliged to open accounts for workers if the ministry insists on distributing salaries through them.

Sharjah, Aug 3: A 24-year-old Indian engineer has fallen to death from the sixth floor of a residential building on Eid al-Adha in the UAE's Sharjah, a media report said on Monday. 

The electrical engineer, identified with his single name Sumesh, hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala.

He lived in a building in Al Dhaid in Sharjah, from where he fell to death on Friday, the report said, adding that he was apparently talking over the phone and threw it down minutes before the incident.

Sumesh, who came to the UAE a year ago, worked as a designer in Sharjah's Muwaileh area. His roommates said that he had some "personal issues" that had been "bothering him for some time", according to the report.

"It was Eid al-Adha and our cook had made biryani for us. We were all cracking jokes and having a good time. In fact, even Cuckoo (Sumesh) was also laughing with us. He seemed happy. Nobody had anticipated this. I did sense a few times that something was troubling him and I even asked him about it, but he brushed it off," the report quoted his roommate Dileep Kumar as saying.

Shans KF, another roommate, said Sumesh was to travel to India for his annual leave but could not because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The police have launched an investigation and moved the body to the forensic lab for an autopsy.

Riyadh, Apr 25: Saudi Arabia announced nine deaths and 1,197 new cases of the COVID-19 virus on Saturday.

Of these cases, 120 were recorded in Madinah, 364 in Makkah, 271 in Jeddah, 170 in Riyadh and 43 in Dammam.

The number of people who had recovered from the coronavirus in the Kingdom increased to 2,214 after 165 patients were reported to have recovered.

A total of 136 people have died of the disease in the Kingdom so far.

A patient in hospital with Covid-19 has given birth to a healthy baby boy in Dubai.

The 25-year-old Indian was admitted to Al Zahra Hospital after testing positive on May 2.

Although the baby was not due to arrive until May 19, the woman went into labour three days later and delivered a healthy boy weighing 3.8kg.

The parents are yet to name the child, who has also been tested for the virus.

“When we first received the Covid-19 positive diagnosis, we were afraid for the health of both my wife and the baby,” said the boy’s father, who did not want to give his name.

“Thankfully with the help of the doctors and nurses at Al Zahra Hospital, my son was born with no complications and my wife remains in stable condition.

“We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Despite arriving two weeks early, both mother and child are doing well but will only be allowed to leave the hospital to return to their home in Dubai after they return three negative tests on the trot.

“The contractions started very suddenly and it all happened very quickly,” said Al Zahra Hospital nursing director Maysoon Yousef.

“The delivery took about 10 to 15 minutes which is something we do not see very often.

“There were no complications and both the mother and baby are in good condition.”

Strict measures are in place to ensure hygiene for those inside the hospital, as well as visitors.

The new mum and her son are in the same room as the baby needs to be nursed.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, a US national public health institute, there is no evidence that suggests the virus can be transmitted through breastfeeding.

New mothers infected with the virus should wear a mask, wash their hands before and after touching the baby.

“We operate by the latest Covid-19 international and local guidelines when it comes to the management of our maternity patients and otherwise,” said Dr Ghassan Lutfi, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at the hospital.

“We take strict measures to guarantee that there is no risk of cross contamination and that all our patients are in safe hands.”
