Millions join anti Trump march across US

Washington, Jan 22: More than a million Americans have taken to the streets from New York to Los Angeles to participate in a women's march in an unprecedented rebuke of President Donald Trump's alleged divisive policies and anti-women views.

The protest came a day after Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.

"This is more than just a single day of action, this is the beginning of a movement to protect, defend and advance human rights, even in the face of adversity," declared organisers of the Women's March at the conclusion of the successful protest.

Participants of the Women's March said they have joined this because of the alleged divisive policies of the new American president.

Five Indian-Americans elected to the Congress enthusiastically joined the march.
In Washington DC, organisers said some half a million people participated in the march, while crowd swelled more than this in Los Angeles.

In Washington protesters filled Pennsylvania Avenue. In the evening, the crowd moved toward the White House.

Filmmaker Michael Moore, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, musician Alicia Keys and other speakers emotionally attacked Trump for his views on immigration, Muslims and women.
Metro trains were packed with pink "pussyhat" wearing protesters — a reference to Trump's claim in a 2005 video that he grabbed women.

Pop diva Madonna, wearing a black pussyhat, made an impromptu appearance on the protest's main stage near Washington's National Mall.

"It took this horrific moment of darkness to wake us the f--k up," Madonna told the crowd. "It seems as though we had all slipped into a false sense of comfort, that justice would prevail and that good would win in the end."

In a sly allusion to the crude remarks Trump made on the tape, many marchers, women and men alike, wore pink “pussy hats” sporting cat ears.

Demonstrators in New York City marched toward Trump Tower -- the President's main residence when he's not in the White House -- but were blocked at Fifth Avenue.

In Chicago some 150,000 people attended, while in Boston tens of thousands of marchers joined the protest which among others was addressed by Senator Elizabeth Warren.

"We can whimper. We can whine. Or we can fight back!. We come here to stand shoulder to shoulder to make clear: We are here! We will not be silent! We will not play dead! We will fight for what we believe in!" Warren said.

"This is a do or die battle for us. We need to fight against the onslaught on our human rights," said Monika, a small time documentary maker from New York, who came to Washington DC to attend the women's march.

Yesterday, former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton came out in support of the march.

"Thanks for standing, speaking & marching for our values @womensmarch. Important as ever. I truly believe we're always Stronger Together," she said in a tweet.

Hubei, Mar 25: As a bus departed from its terminus at Hankou Railway Station at 5:25 am Wednesday morning, Wuhan started to resume bus service after nine weeks of lockdown.

Apart from a driver, a safety supervisor was also on each bus, whose duty was to make sure all passengers are healthy.
"For those who do not use smartphones, they should bring with them a health certificate issued by the health authorities," said Zhou Jingjing, a safety supervisor aboard bus No. 511 departing from the Wuchang Railway Station complex.
The once hardest-hit city in central China's Hubei Province during the COVID-19 outbreak took unprecedented traffic restrictions on Jan 23. All of its public transport and all outbound flights and trains had been suspended in an attempt to contain the virus within the region.

Melbourne, July 1: Authorities will lock down around 300,000 people in suburbs north of Melbourne for a month from late on Wednesday to contain the risk of infection after two weeks of double-digit rises in new coronavirus cases in Australia's second-most populous state.

Australia has fared better than many countries in the pandemic, with around 7,830 cases and 104 deaths, but the recent surge has stoked fears of a second wave of COVID-19, echoing concerns expressed in other countries.

Globally, coronavirus cases exceeded 10 million on Sunday, a major milestone in the spread of a disease that has killed more than half a million people in seven months.

From midnight, more than 30 suburbs in Australia's second-biggest city will return to stage three restrictions, the third-strictest level in curbs to control the pandemic. That means residents will be confined to home except for grocery shopping, health appointments, work or caregiving, and exercise.

The restrictions will be accompanied by a testing blitz that authorities hope will extend to half the population of the area affected, and for which borders will be patrolled, authorities said. The measures come as curbs ease across the rest of the state of Victoria, with restaurants, gyms and cinemas reopening in recent weeks.

Victoria recorded 73 fresh cases on Tuesday from 20,682 tests, following an increase of 75 cases on Monday. State premier Daniel Andrews warned on Wednesday that the return of broader restrictions across city remained a possibility.

"If we all stick together these next four weeks, we can regain control of that community transmission ... across metropolitan Melbourne," Andrews said at a briefing. "Ultimately if I didn't shut down those postcodes I'd be shutting down all postcodes. We want to avoid that."

Victoria's spike in cases has been linked to staff members at hotels housing returned travellers for which quarantine protocols were not strictly followed. Victorian state authorities have announced an investigation into the matter.

Some other Australian states and territories are preparing to open borders, but applying limits and quarantine measures to citizens of Victoria as the school holiday season gets under way.

South Australia, the country's fifth most populous state, has had just three new cases in the past month. But citing the spike in coronavirus infections, on Tuesday it cancelled its scheduled reopening to other parts of the nation.

New South Wales (NSW), Australia's most populous state, has stopped short of closing its borders to all Victorians, but those holidaying from hotspot areas - not permitted under NSW rules - can be handed a fine of A$11,000 ($7,596) or jailed if they are detected, state authorities said.

The delays reopening internal borders cast doubts over a federal plan to set up "travel bubble" with neighbouring New Zealand that would allow movement between the two countries.
