MIM wants Rs 4,100 cr for minority welfare in Telangana budget

Hyderabad, Jan 17: The All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) today requested Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to allocate Rs 4,100 crore for the welfare of minorities in the forthcoming state budget.

AIMIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi, in a letter to the CM, said though the budgetary allocations for minorities welfare have aggregated to Rs 4,613.85 crore in four years (2014-15 to 2017-18), the actual releases have been only Rs 2,702 crore while the actual expenditure was Rs 2,330 crore.

By the end of the current financial year, this figure may reach Rs 2,500 crore, the AIMIM's floor leader in the state Assembly said.

"We would earnestly request you to raise the budgetary allocation for the minorities welfare department to Rs 4,100 crore in the financial year 2018-19 to meet the commitments on the existing and proposed schemes," he said.

Owaisi said they want higher allocations for the minorities' residential schools, loaning programmes, and scholarships and fees reimbursement on par with the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, as assured by the CM in the Assembly.

He pointed out that the requested amount will be only 2 percent of the Rs 2 lakh crore state budget that the government is contemplating for the 2018-19 fiscal.

Expressing gratitude for allotting Rs 1,249.49 crore and additional allocations of Rs 97.43 crore for the minorities welfare department in the last state budget, Owaisi requested the CM to ensure that the allocated funds are released expeditiously before the end of the financial year.

India's COVID-19 tally raced past the seven lakh-mark with 22,252 fresh infections on Tuesday, five days after crossing the six lakh post, while the death toll climbed to 20,160 as 467 more people succumbed to the disease, according to the Union health ministry.

With this, the country has recorded over 20,000 cases of the infection for the fifth consecutive day.

India's coronavirus infection caseload stands at 7,19,665, the ministry's data updated at 8 am showed.

With a steady rise, the number of recoveries stands at 4,39,947, while there are 2,59,557 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country.

"Thus, around 61.13 % of patients have recovered so far," an official said.

The total number of confirmed cases also includes foreigners.

Of the 467 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 204 are from Maharashtra, 61 from Tamil Nadu, 48 from Delhi, 29 from Karnataka, 24 from Uttar Pradesh, 22 from West Bengal, 17 from Gujarat.

Telangana and Haryana reported 11 deaths each; Madhya Pradesh nine; Andhra Pradesh seven; Jammu and Kashmir six; Rajasthan and Punjab five each; Bihar, Kerala and Odisha two each; and Arunachal Pradesh and Jharkhand one each.

Moscow, Aug 7: Russia will register its first vaccine against the coronavirus on August 12, Deputy Health Minister Oleg Gridnev said on Friday.

The vaccine has been developed jointly by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry.

"The vaccine developed by the Gamaleya centre will be registered on August 12. At the moment, the last, third, stage is underway. The trials are extremely important. We have to understand that the vaccine must be safe. Medical professionals and senior citizens will be the first to get vaccinated," Gridnev told reporters at the opening of a cancer centre building in the city of Ufa.

According to the minister, the effectiveness of the vaccine will be judged when the population immunity has formed.

Clinical trials of the vaccine began on June 18 and included 38 volunteers. All of the participants developed immunity. 

The first group was discharged on July 15 and the second group on July 20.

Gautam Buddh Nagar, Mar 24: As many as 96 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered and more than 2000 challans issued in Noida yesterday for violation of lockdown rules, police said. The lockdown was imposed in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus, which has taken more than 14000 lives across the globe.

The FIRs were registered against people for allegedly flouting Section 144 and not adhering to the orders of the state government for staying indoors.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday stated that all borders adjoining Uttar Pradesh should be completely sealed.
